Chapter 418 Baby Was Gone

Wilber's hair was practically standing on end with anger. He was shaking all over. "How could you do this? You've been messing with her since yesterday. You made food she hates, cranked up the AC when she was cold, and even gave her stuff she's allergic to on purpose. I should've never let you take care of her."

Wilber slapped his forehead, yanking at his hair so hard he pulled out a few strands.

Madeline's lips were pressed together, looking deeply sorrowful.

Micah cleared his throat, trying to calm things down. "The results aren't out yet, so what's the point of arguing? Besides, it's just from the second floor. Even kids wouldn't get hurt from a fall like that. Just wait."

Micah felt a bit uneasy as he said this. He hadn't seen the incident, but Juliet was still early in her pregnancy.

The three of them waited anxiously in the gloomy atmosphere. After what felt like forever, a doctor wearing a mask walked out. "Who's the patient's family?"

Wilber jumped up like he had springs under him. His lips trembled, and his teeth chattered. "I'm her husband. How is she? Is the baby okay?"

The doctor glanced at him indifferently, his eyes slightly evasive. His tone was calm. "Her abdomen took a severe hit. The baby didn't make it."

Wilber swayed, nearly fainting. Micah hurriedly supported him, wanting to say something but hesitating. Madeline was also stunned.

Wilber turned his head, his eyes red as he glared at Madeline with intense hatred. He spat out angrily, "You killed your own grandchild. Are you happy now?"

Madeline shuddered at his outburst.

Micah, caught in the middle, felt torn between the two. After a while, he said, "Alright, the baby's gone. Let's focus on Juliet's recovery. You can try for another baby later. You both are still young; you'll have more kids eventually."

"There won't be any more! Never again," Wilber shouted in despair, crouching down with his head in his hands. His voice was thick with sobs. His only child was gone. He would never have his own biological child again.

Micah asked in confusion, "What do you mean by that? Wilber, what do you mean by 'never again'? Explain yourself."

The doctor said irritably, "No loud noises in the hospital. The patient will be moved to a room for observation soon. Try not to upset her."

Micah had to set aside his confusion for now. The three of them gathered around Juliet's bed.

To ensure authenticity, Juliet had let the doctor administer anesthesia. When the anesthesia wore off, it was already three hours later. Her consciousness began to clear, though her mind was still a bit foggy. As she opened her eyes, she saw three anxious faces.

Wilber's eyes and nose were red, showing just how long he'd been in distress. But he quickly pulled himself together for Juliet. The baby was gone, and he couldn't lose her too. He didn't know how he'd go on without her.

"Wilber," Juliet's voice was barely a whisper. She raised her hand, and Wilber grabbed it tightly.

"Juliet, are you still in pain?" he asked.

Juliet weakly nodded, placing her other hand on her flat abdomen. Her voice trembled. "Is the baby still there?"

Wilber froze, speechless. His eyes immediately welled up, and tears started flowing.

Juliet's crying was heart-wrenching. "The baby is gone, isn't it?"

Wilber opened his mouth, wanting to say, "We'll have another baby." But thinking of his condition, he felt he had no right to say that.

Juliet's gaze shifted to Madeline, who looked devastated. "Mom, I've always known you don't like me, so I never expected your blessing. But why did you do this to me? Why did you push me down the stairs and kill my baby?"

Her tone was so agitated that she started coughing violently.

Madeline was bewildered by Juliet's accusation. "When did I push you? I was holding a suitcase at the time. How could I have pushed you? You fell on your own."

Juliet gave a bitter smile. "Are you saying I would cruelly kill my own child? I've been with Wilber for over a year. My biggest wish was to marry him, have a beautiful baby, and live a peaceful life at home. Why did you shatter my dream?"

At this moment, Madeline was truly at a loss for words. She knew that no matter what she said, Wilber wouldn't believe her. Because when Juliet fell, the only person standing behind her was her.

Seeing the situation deteriorate, Micah didn't want Madeline to stay any longer and pulled her away.

Outside the room, Madeline started to cry. Both her desire to take care of Juliet and her sadness over the lost baby were genuine, and her heartbreak over being falsely accused was even more genuine. "I didn't push her."

Micah held her in his arms, gently patting her back. "I know you wouldn't do such a thing. Wilber doesn't believe you, but I do."

Having lived together for so many years, Micah naturally understood her character. "Given the current situation, it's not looking good. With Wilber's condition, he might never be able to have children again. If he divorces Juliet over this, finding another wife will be even harder."

While Juliet was still unconscious, Micah had asked Wilber about his earlier statement and learned the truth. But the Curtis family was not to be trifled with. So they had to swallow this grievance.

Madeline was so anxious she slapped her thigh. "I should never have offered to take care of her. What a mess!" She had been so sincere, only to be falsely accused in the end.
