Chapter 205 Was She Wrong?

Luann Weaver's face was etched with seriousness.

"You might not know this, Mr. Gilbert. Everything might look fine from the outside, but in truth the Weaver Family is a hollow shell.

"We can't make ends meet, and we constantly need to inject more money into the business. My father immediately used the money Wilber gave me to plug the gaping holes in the Weaver family finances.

"And Wilber added more money to the sum just to marry my sister. If my dad hasn’t used that money after all this time, my sister has probably burned through it already."

Mrs. Gilbert furrowed her brows.

She couldn't find it in her to like Juliet Weaver, who was always adorned with luxury.

Luann had reminded her of the large sum of money Wilber had spent.

"Ah, it's getting late. I should be going."

"Wilber, go escort Luann out."

At the doorway, Luann held Wilber back, got in her car, and left.

Once Wilber Gilbert was back inside, Mrs. Gilbert asked, "Did you spend a lot of money on jewelry for Juliet Weaver?"

Wilber Gilbert remembered the two and a half million he had been bilked out of.

He nodded silently.

Mrs. Gilbert sighed. "Just let it go. Consider it an expensive lesson learned."

"It was an expensive lesson alright!" Mr. Gilbert instantly bristled. "Why do we have to be the ones to swallow this loss? Since Wilber won't marry a Weaver girl, we might as well sever ties!"

"What are you saying?" Mrs. Gilbert didn't quite catch his drift.

Mr. Gilbert's lips twisted as he said fiercely, "Since the Weavers aren’t willing to cough up the money, and the company is in this state…

"Why don't we help out, take over the Weaver family business, and prevent those assets from going to waste?"

Wilber protested immediately. "Dad! What are you doing? You—"

"Shut up!" Mr. Gilbert snapped. "You useless piece of junk! If you hadn't messed things up with Juliet, we wouldn’t be in this mess!"

Wilber deflated instantly.

"This... This is my fault.

"But we can't just go after the Weaver family... Sure, Juliet messed up, but she and I had something real."

Mr. Gilbert, seething with rage, slapped him across the head.

"There’s no hope for this kid!"

Wilber Gilbert hung his head low. "Just hold off, will you? I'm planning to have a serious talk with Juliet."

He needed to know why Juliet had tried to play him and Luann Weaver.

"Why, you... get back here, kid!"

But Wilber was already storming out.

He dialed Juliet’s number.

"Wilber? What's up... why are calling me so suddenly?" Juliet was genuinely startled.

"Where are you? I need to see you."

Juliet gave him her current address without hesitation.

Peter had remained unmoved by all her attempts at flirtation, and she hadn't found a better option for herself.

Since Wilber was coming to her willingly, it was better to have someone than no one.

Juliet called the security desk to let Wilber Gilbert in.

Wilber gazed at Juliet's luxurious mansion in utter astonishment.

"Is this the place your company set you up with?"

Juliet didn't answer. Instead, she threw herself into his arms and clung to him, greedily inhaling his scent.

"Wilber, I've missed you so much..."

Wilber stiffened and tried to push her away without success.

"Let go of me."

"I can't let go. What if you leave?" Juliet's voice was softened with vulnerability.

Wilber sighed. "I'm already here. Where else would I go?"

When Juliet heard that, she finally lifted her eyes, misty with tears. She looked at him sadly, then locked the door, dragged him to the sofa, and sat him down.

Wilber got straight to the point.

"Did you send that text message about Luann at the hotel with another man on purpose?”P

Juliet paused, taken aback.

She hadn't expected this long-buried issue to resurface now.

"Wilber..."

"Answer me!"

Juliet lowered her head, her fingers playing nervously with her skirt. Finally, after what felt like an eternity, she muttered a low, "Yes."

Wilber must have spoken to Luann. There was no other explanation for this.

Any attempt at a defense would be futile, so she might as well come clean.

Wilber was about to explode in anger when he heard Juliet's soft sobs.

Her shoulders trembled subtly, the movement amplifying the rhythm of her crying.

"Wilber, I'm sorry... I know I hurt your sister and damaged your relationship. But... I did it because I love you too much and had to resort to desperate measures...

"Every time you went out to dine with her, to chat with her, I felt unbearable pain. Do you know how lonely it felt to lie alone in that cold, huge bed?

"I wanted you all to myself. I didn't want to share your love with my sister... When I did it, I knew you would find out the truth one day. But I don't regret it because it’s not wrong for me to love someone..."

Wilber felt his heart soften as he listened to her.

"You... You can't do something like that even if you do love me! If I had known that Luann wasn't like that, I would've...”

‘I wouldn't have broken up with her!’ he thought bitterly.

Juliet's tears fell like beads on a string, cascading down her cheeks.

She bit her lower lip, struggling to keep her sobs silent.

"I'm sorry, Wilber, it was my fault..."

Juliet Weaver crying with her eyes red and swollen and her nose flushed reminded Wilber of an adorable little rabbit.

Wilber couldn't bring himself to say a word of reproach.

Juliet had anticipated this reaction.

She had been by Wilber's side for a year and knew him well. He always had a soft spot for women who brought out his protective instincts.

This was precisely why things hadn't worked out with Luann. Luann never showed weakness.

She always maintained a calm and distant composure, creating an aura that seemed impenetrable.

Compared to her, Juliet knew how to win a man's favor. She knew when to cry, when to smile, and when to seduce.

"I never would have guessed that you, could do something so calculated. You seemed so meek and gentle," Wilber said hoarsely, full of disappointment.

When Luann unveiled the truth, he had doubted whether the Juliet Weaver she was talking about was the same innocent and kind-hearted Juliet Weaver he knew.

Juliet curled her lips into a bitter smile.

"If I could, I would remain pure and simple beside the man I love. If you hadn’t been with my sister, I wouldn't have to go to those lengths to keep you here...
P
“All this time, I only wanted to marry you, Wilber. All I wanted was a title. Is it wrong for a woman to want that?”

Wilber fell silent.
