Chapter 479 A Hamburger
The night deepened.
Alvin finally lay down on the bed.
Although it was a hard bed, it was better than sleeping outdoors.
He thought he would sleep soundly, but unexpectedly, he woke up in the middle of the night from the cold!
Alvin sneezed loudly.
His clothes and pants were washed by Emily, and the ones he was wearing were Trevor's.
He and Trevor were covered with a very thin summer blanket.
Alvin didn't expect the temperature to drop so low.
His instinctive reaction was that if he couldn't stand the cold, how could Emily, a girl, endure it?
Alvin tiptoed out of bed and found Emily lying on the bed, sleeping in a curled-up position, wrapped tightly in the blanket.
Alvin thought for a moment and took off his T-shirt to cover her blanket.
Although the effect was minimal, it could still give her a bit of warmth.
As expected, Alvin caught a cold the next day.
Emily knew the reason for Alvin's cold and kept making thank-you gestures to him, then asked if he wanted to go out with her. It would be best to move around a bit to generate some body heat, which would help him recover faster.
Listening to Trevor's translation, Alvin didn't say anything.
He silently walked out the door and touched his clothes.
Damn.
Still wet.
"Then let's go. It's best to go back to the place we were yesterday and get my suitcase back. That way, I can have some other clothes."
Emily smiled happily.
Fortunately, the alley they were in yesterday was rarely visited, so Alvin's suitcase hadn't been taken.
After putting their things back, Emily said she needed to go collect bottles and asked if he wanted to join her.
Alvin hesitated, frowning.
After all, he was from the Curtis family. Doing such a thing was really hard for him to accept!
Emily's long eyelashes fluttered.
A trace of loneliness flashed in her eyes.
In fact, she had noticed when she met Alvin that his clothes were much better than theirs.
It was clear that he usually lived a relatively good life.
She really shouldn't have made such a request.
Emily's shoulders dropped slightly, and she continued to gesture.
Hard to accept! Translation: "It's okay if you don't want to go. Just stay home and watch TV. When Emily comes back at noon, she'll make us lunch."
Alvin felt something was off when he heard this.
It was as if he was a freeloading gigolo!
No way, no way.
That would be too embarrassing for the Curtis family!
If he was too embarrassed to pick up a few bottles, how could he achieve anything big in the future?
Alvin comforted himself in his heart.
He spoke decisively.
"Of course, I'll go!"
Letting a little girl go out and work hard while he stayed home waiting for food and clothes—Alvin didn't have the face for that.
Besides, repaying kindness shouldn't just be words; there should be some action!
Alvin decisively grabbed Emily's wrist and walked out.
Emily had lived here for many years and knew the surroundings well.
She took Alvin around the area and collected quite a few valuable items.
They sold the empty bottles for money.
To Alvin's surprise, they made quite a bit of money!
Passing by a burger joint, Alvin couldn't help but glance at it and swallow.
But he didn't say anything.
Emily noticed his expression and lightly pursed her lips.
"I'm exhausted. Let's sit here and rest for a while."
Alvin plopped down on a bench.
In the cool autumn, he was sweating all over.
Already sick and a bit tired, he felt weak, but his spirits were much better, and his temples didn't hurt as much as they did in the morning.
Emily stood up, placed her hands on his shoulders, and pressed lightly.
Then she left.
"Hey, where are you going?" Alvin asked hurriedly.
Emily shook her head, pointed at him, and then at the bench.
It seemed she was saying: Stay here, I'll be back soon.
Alvin sighed, "Alright then."
Emily jogged away.
About half an hour later.
She returned.
Her face was flushed with embarrassment, and it was unclear what had just happened.
Alvin was about to get up when he saw her, like presenting a treasure, handing him a burger.
Her eyes were full of sparkling colors.
Alvin's expression changed.
He was surprised, delighted, angry, and heartbroken.
"Why did you buy this for me?"
Whether it was his harsh tone or fierce expression, Emily's smile gradually disappeared, and she looked at him with some fear, unconsciously taking a step back.
You don't like it?
But you were staring at the burger just now.
Emily wanted to speak, but she couldn't.
Alvin realized he had scared her and quickly softened his tone, reaching out to take the burger.
"I didn't mean it that way. Don't be afraid."
"Thank you. I really want to eat a burger, but now is not the time for that."
"Your grandpa is still bedridden, and we need money for everything."
"That burger is so expensive. Did it cost all the money we made today?"
Emily shook her head and shook her cloth money bag.
Hearing the sound of coins inside, Alvin breathed a sigh of relief.
At the same time, he felt deeply guilty.
"I came here to help you, but instead, I made you spend more money."
Emily shook her head.
Alvin pulled her to sit down.
He handed her the burger.
"How about we each eat half?"
Emily still shook her head.
Alvin frowned, "If you don't eat, then I won't eat either."
Emily panicked and quickly took the burger, carefully taking a bite.
Alvin urged, "You need to take a bigger bite, so you get both the bun and the meat."
Emily did as he said.
A taste she had never experienced before exploded in her mouth.
It was indescribably delicious.
Emily was stunned, holding the burger.
Seeing her expression, Alvin knew she had never had a burger before, yet she was kind enough to buy one for him, a stranger she had just met.
Moreover, he suddenly realized something.
The burger joint was only about five minutes away.
Why did Emily take so long to come back?
Was it because she couldn't speak and had to gesture for a long time?
Did the staff mock or get impatient with her?
Was she scared because she had never been in such a place before?
Did she hesitate at the door for a long time?
Alvin closed his eyes.
Having never lacked anything since childhood, he now felt a deep sense of sorrow.
He suddenly understood why Luann was willing to spend so much money to help others.
