Chapter 444 Who Was Suspected
After Luann handed over the video to Geoffrey, he watched it for a bit and nodded. "Alright, I'll call Juliet in a bit. But, Ms. Weaver, I might need to pass this case to someone else. Got some stuff to handle lately."
Luann nodded, understanding. Geoffrey had a special status and was always busy with different cases, rarely spending much time in Upper West Side.
Seeing Luann agree without any fuss, Geoffrey let out a sigh of relief. When he got the urgent order to handle a serial case, his first thought was that he couldn't help Luann. "Thanks for understanding, Ms. Weaver."
Half an hour later, Juliet walked in. She was wearing a bright red dress, swaying gracefully as she moved. As soon as she entered the interrogation room, she sat down on the chair without being told.
In front of her was Ryan Dixon, looking about twenty-two, with glasses perched on his nose, giving him a bit of a nerdy and honest look.
A large glass pane in the room clearly reflected their figures. From outside, one could see what was happening inside, and their conversation was broadcast through the speaker.
Juliet leaned back in her chair and yawned slowly.
"Ms. Weaver," Ryan started, "last night..."
"Can I get a pillow? This chair is killing my back," Juliet cut him off.
Ryan frowned a bit. "Please cooperate with us."
Juliet chuckled. "I am cooperating. I came right away when I got the call. This dress is even from our film crew."
Ryan had no choice but to get up, grab a cushion from an outside chair, and hand it to Juliet. "Where were you last night around midnight?"
Juliet continued, "Can I get a glass of water? I'm a bit thirsty. My lips are chapped."
Ryan, somewhat helpless, poured her some water.
Luckily, Juliet didn't keep messing around and answered his question directly, "Last night, I went to see Grace to discuss some stuff. I didn't get home until around four in the morning. What's going on?"
Ryan silently noted down the timeline in his notebook and said, "Mike is dead."
Juliet's body trembled, and she stood up abruptly, her hands on the table. "How did he die? What's going on? This is so sudden!"
Her emotions were a bit unusual but still reasonable. Tears flowed instantly from her eyes, even reddening her nose. She cried with her shoulders shaking, looking extremely upset.
Ryan handed her a pack of tissues. "When was the last time you saw him?"
Juliet wiped her tears and lowered her head, as if thinking. "A long time ago. Ever since Mike was confined to the hospital by Luann, I haven't seen him."
Ryan didn't hesitate to call her out, "You're lying."
Juliet's heart skipped a beat. "I'm not lying."
Ryan directly took out Luann's tablet, which showed a short clip. It was the scene of her entering Mike's hospital room with two people.
Juliet looked incredulously at the angle captured by the camera. She didn't expect Luann to have installed such a thing in the hospital room.
After a bit, without hearing anything, Juliet's tension eased up. Her mind raced. Since Luann didn't show up or contact them when Wilber took Mike away yesterday, it meant she didn't know about it at the time.
Juliet finally said, "Alright, I admit it, I did go see my dad last night."
Ryan kept his head down, taking notes. "Why did you go see him? Why so late? Who were the two people with you? And what was the document you forced Mike to sign? This is a murder case. If you lie or withhold information, you know the consequences."
Juliet looked scared, her body trembling. She bit her lip tightly, her fingers nervously intertwined. "As a daughter, it's normal to worry about my dad's health and sneak in to see him, right? Why at night? Because I didn't want Luann to know. Since Luann took over caring for him, she hasn't let anyone visit him. I was anxious. So I thought I'd see him, even if just for a moment."
She added, "The two people with me were my friends. It's not safe for a girl to go out alone at night, so I brought them for protection. Isn't that normal too? As for the document, it was a will."
Ryan paused. "A will?"
Juliet nodded. "Yes, my dad was seriously ill, and his health was failing. Naturally, he needed to make arrangements for the future. So I had a lawyer draft a contract for him to sign. But he was too weak to speak, so I had him leave a fingerprint. This seems to be a family matter, right? Are you going to interfere with inheritance too?"
Ryan said, "But from the hospital's footage, it looked like Mike didn't want to leave his fingerprint."
"How could that be? My dad loved me the most. If he didn't give the inheritance to me, who else would he give it to? Besides, I asked him first, and he agreed with a nod before I did it," Juliet said, looking innocent and with an impeccable reason.
Ryan asked, "According to the hospital's footage, your friend was watching the window and seemed to see someone, which is why you left in a hurry, right?"
Juliet sighed, "He saw Wilber. Recently, things between Wilber and me have been all over the internet, and he's been slandering me. I was afraid if he saw me there, he'd make up a bunch of stories again. So I decided to avoid him and left with my friends through the emergency exit."
Ryan frowned. "So you didn't know he took Mike away?"
"No, if I had known, I would have contacted Luann immediately," Juliet said, tears falling again, looking extremely guilty. "It's all my fault. If I had waited a bit longer for Wilber to leave, maybe my father wouldn't have died. Was it Wilber? Did he kill my dad?"
Ryan said, "We don't have concrete evidence yet. The eyewitness only said they saw someone in a wheelchair fall from the rooftop, and there was another person, Wilber."
Hatred filled Juliet's eyes as she stood up abruptly, looking like she was ready to fight Wilber to the death. "He has slandered me repeatedly, and now he wants to kill my dad. Where is he now?"
