Chapter 106 I Can't Live Without My Wife
Everly's eyes widened in disbelief at the words coming from Grandpa's mouth.
"But Grandpa, didn't you just suggest that Reese and Malcolm should get a divorce? How come you've suddenly changed your mind after just one conversation?"
Could it be that Reese really has some kind of special trick up her sleeve? Why else would Grandpa change his stance so abruptly?
She couldn't fathom what could have possibly made Grandpa reverse his decision about Reese.
Finn Sawyer, of course, wasn't about to reveal the private conversation he had with Reese. He brushed off her queries lightly.
"I just think that since Malcolm only recently got married, and besides, our family has an engagement pact with the Brooks family, we can't simply push for a divorce because Malcolm's injury hasn't healed. Rumors might spread that we mistreated Reese, and the Brooks family won't let it slide either."
Everly still didn't buy that reasoning; it seemed too far-fetched, and she knew Grandpa, a man of careful thought and considerations, wouldn't have reversed the divorce idea without something solid backing his decision. There must be more to the story.
"But Grandpa, Reese isn't the right fit to be Malcolm's wife."
"And you think you are?" Reese's sharp retort came unexpectedly before Finn Sawyer had the chance to respond to Everly's remark.
Everly glared at Reese. "What nonsense are you spouting?"
Deep down, she felt a twinge of guilt; it seemed like Reese was aware of her feelings for Malcolm.
If she admitted her feelings for Malcolm in front of Grandpa, he would surely rebuke her, especially since she hadn't yet figured out how to confess her feelings to Malcolm properly.
She hoped for a fitting moment to express herself, not under this kind of pressure from Reese.
Reese’s eyes, sharp and daunting, seemed to penetrate Everly’s guilt-ridden gaze as if seeing right into her soul.
"If you aren't planning to be Malcolm's wife, why try to tear us apart? Don't you realize that Malcolm can't live without me now?"
She deliberately emphasized those last few words with a biting intensity.
Vincent couldn't help but chuckle as he looked down; Reese sure was a piece of work. Even in front of Grandpa Flynn, she had the guts to be so sarcastically witty without being disliked; instead, her unique personality was rather charming.
He found himself curious about what she wouldn't dare to say or do.
Everly was about to explode with frustration, her face flushed with anger, fists clenched tight as she barked at Reese.
"How dare you say something so shameless! As if Malcolm could ever live without me. Get over yourself already."
Malcolm was her dream, and she had grown up with him since childhood. If Malcolm didn't harbor any romantic feelings for her, how could he feel anything for a girl he had just met? It was only out of respect for the Flynn family's dignity that he hadn't been more dismissive. That was just the kind of guy Malcolm was.
Reese, with a flirtatious glance, draped her arm around Malcolm's shoulder and leaned in to ask him.
"Honey, can you live without me now?"
Her voice was so sweet it could melt bones. Malcolm hadn't expected his wife to be such a flirt; she could be sassy or sweet, a woman of many roles.
The adoration in his eyes was almost spilling over, his voice deep and seductive.
"I could never live without my wife," he declared, and with a reverse grip, he clasped Reese's hand on his shoulder, fingers interlocking.
Vincent, with a bittersweet smile, covered his face – the sweetness was almost too much to handle, and he knew he had to leave.
He got up hastily: "Grandpa, I'm heading back to my room. There's some work at the hospital that I need to take care of."
Finn Sawyer rose as well: "I need to get back for my medication."
A staff member, hearing this, helped Finn Sawyer towards the stairs, and suddenly the living room was left with just the three of them. Everly's face was twisted with rage, a fiery knot in her chest making her unbearably agitated.
Especially at the sight of Reese's tender look towards Malcolm, she longed to slap that smug expression off the young woman's face. But knowing she couldn't win, she stomped her foot in frustration and ran upstairs.
Once Everly was out of sight, the sweetness on Reese's face vanished instantly, withdrawing her hand without hesitation.
The swift change caught Malcolm off-guard as he looked at his hand still hanging in the air, offering a sheepish chuckle.
"That was a quick turnaround."
"As actors in life, why take it seriously? I'm heading upstairs."
With that, Reese turned and went up the stairs.
A dejected Malcolm called out to her retreating figure, "Aren't you going to help me upstairs?"
Reese waved her hand over her shoulder as she left, her gesture needing no interpretation — she wasn't the type to change her mind.
Malcolm could only offer a wry smile. What a headstrong wife he had married, using him to her advantage without even a hint of reward. But it was this very fire that made her stand out, he thought. He relished her spunk and the feisty retorts she delivered. He found her flaws and virtues equally appealing.
He was becoming increasingly eager to see what the future held with her — it was sure to be filled with interesting twists and turns.
Everly didn't retreat to her own room but headed straight to Vincent's, breezing in without so much as a knock.
Vincent was lounging in his chair, leisurely sipping tea as if the earlier drama hadn't fazed him in the least; to him, it was no more than a trifling show.
"Doesn't it bother you at all?" Everly scoffed upon seeing Vincent's relaxed demeanor.
Vincent spread his hands, a humorous sparkle playing in his dark eyes. "Why would it? I'm not the one pining over Malcolm."
His words struck Everly to the core. She slammed her hand on the table, her face, normally enhanced by meticulous makeup, now twisted in fury.
"Don't you find Reese insufferable? Ever since she entered our lives, she has stirred chaos, and for all we know, she might be planning to use Malcolm as a stepping stone."
