Chapter 550 A Desperate Gamble
Aiden was still in the operating room, and Malcolm, eager to get to the bottom of this, called Jason over.
Jason's expression mirrored his inner turmoil. Stricken with worry for Aiden and burdened by guilt, he regretted not standing vigil by Aiden's side. His absence felt like a grave mistake that had led to these unfortunate events.
As he approached, Malcolm's commanding presence loomed over him. "Jason, what exactly is going on? Wasn't Grandpa doing fine recently? How did his heart condition suddenly flare up?"
Jason's focus narrowed down to informing Malcolm, and he was determined to uncover the truth. Locking eyes with Everly, he revealed, "Ms. Everly Flynn visited Mr. Aiden Flynn, offering him a milk product that hasn't even hit the shelves yet. She claimed it was a promotional gift from the manufacturer, intended for distribution among the company's employees."
Malcolm picked up on the clue. So the issue lay with the milk Aiden drank. "Where's the milk?" he asked.
"The milk is with Ms. Everly Flynn. After Mr. Aiden Flynn drank it, she took it back," Jason replied, assuming the action was very suspicious.
Malcolm immediately looked at Everly. "Where's the milk?"
Under Malcolm's penetrating stare, Everly trembled with fear, her guilty conscience weighing heavily on her. "I... I already disposed of it," she stammered, her voice quivering.
Her admission only sparked further suspicion. If the milk was safe, as she claimed, why would she feel compelled to discard it, raising questions about the true nature of the situation?
Malcolm took a step forward, his eyes sharp as a blade, as if he could see right through her.
Everly's hands were trembling, and her eyes were filled with uncontrollable panic. "Malcolm... please don't look at me like that."
"If you already know what I'm thinking, then you might as well tell the truth. Considering we grew up together, I can still give you a chance to make amends," Malcolm offered.
Despite Everly's attempts at subtlety, Malcolm saw through her schemes with ease. The realization dawned on her that Vincent had been manipulating her all along, leaving her with no choice but to confess to Malcolm.
Everly suddenly began to cry in grievance. "Malcolm, I had no choice. Vincent forced me to do it. I have no idea how much he put in the milk. I didn't think it would be a problem if Grandpa only drank a little."
Malcolm's eyes turned bloodshot, and he slapped Everly across the face, veins bulging in anger as he roared.
"Everly, do you have any conscience left? Grandpa adopted when you were pitiful and treated you like his own granddaughter, and you conspired with Vincent to harm him!" Malcolm shouted.
Jason, standing nearby, silently pumped his fist in silent victory. 'She had it coming,' he thought. Aiden had always treated her like family, yet she turned out to be ungrateful. And Vincent? He was just as guilty. The duo had conspired to harm Aiden, and that didn't sit right with Jason at all.
Everly was knocked to the floor by Malcolm's slap, clutching her face in shock as she looked at the furious Malcolm. She never expected that Malcolm, who had never hit a woman, would slap her for the first time. At that moment, her mind went blank, and fear painted her face with a stark intensity.
Malcolm made a decisive choice to cut ties with Everly from the Flynn family. From that point forward, she was no longer associated with the Flynns and would receive none of the family's privileges or honors. "From today on, you better never show up in front of Grandpa again!" he stated.
When Everly heard this, her expression changed drastically. Frantically, she clutched onto Malcolm's pant leg, her face filled with regret. "I was wrong, Malcolm. Don't kick me out. I really know I was wrong. It was all Vincent's fault. He deceived me. It really has nothing to do with me, Malcolm..."
She couldn't leave the Flynn family. She understood the consequences of such a decision. Without the shield of the Flynn family's name, would her friends still show her the same respect and address her as Ms. Flynn?
Having seen through Everly's thoughts, Malcolm shook her off in disgust, showing no mercy. "Save it. The moment you made that decision, you were already wrong."
The Flynn family had raised her for so many years. Aiden never showed favoritism and treated her and Alyssa the same. He often reminded Malcolm to treat Everly like a sister because of her unfortunate background.
No one could have predicted that she would grow up to be a wolf in sheep's clothing, turning against those who had helped her. Malcolm felt it was unfair to his grandpa.
Everly was now in a state of panic. A singular thought consumed her: she couldn't bear to sever ties with the Flynn family. The mere idea of departing filled her with dread, for she feared it would spell ruin for her future.
Malcolm pushed her away, but she came forward again, clinging tightly, her face full of tears, screaming in desperation, "Malcolm, I was wrong. Please forgive me for once. I promise I'll listen to you all from now on. When Grandpa gets better, I'll confess my mistake. Please don't kick me out, okay?"
It wasn't that Jason couldn't bear watching Malcolm allow Everly to kneel on the floor. What truly grated on him was not being able to tolerate Everly's behavior any longer. "Ms. Everly Flynn, as a servant, I shouldn't say this, but think about it. Has Mr. Aiden Flynn ever mistreated you? Has Mr. Malcolm Flynn ever mistreated you? But what about Mr. Vincent Flynn? Has he ever helped you? So why would you help him harm those who have helped you?" he questioned.
In a sudden moment of clarity, Everly found herself unable to provide an answer to the question. Why had she taken part in this scheme? The truth evaded her, leaving her to ponder if she had simply been out of her mind when she had agreed to Vincent's plan.
Malcolm bent down, grabbed Everly's chin, and forced her to look at him. "Everly, tell me, is there anything else you're keeping from me?"
"I..." Momentarily torn, Everly contemplated whether to disclose Vincent's sinister intentions towards Reese. Revealing the truth meant saving Reese but potentially losing any hope of reconciliation with Malcolm. If Reese survived, her chances of reuniting with the Flynn family would be dashed.
With a solemn shake of her head, she whispered, "No, there's nothing else."
Malcolm gave Everly one last warning. "I'm reminding you one last time. If you don't tell the truth, you'll pay the price for any problems that arise!"This price might be more than she could bear.
Everly, though fearful, had no other choice. She had to take a gamble and hope Vincent could take Reese's life.
