Chapter 548 How Much Dosage?
As Jason hurried over, Aiden had already taken a sip of the spiked milk, his expression shifting dramatically as he lunged to seize the glass. "Mr. Flynn!" he exclaimed, his tone filled with a mix of alarm and concern.
Aiden naturally didn't expect his granddaughter, whom he had raised since childhood, to harm him. In fact, no one wouldn't believe it.
Seeing Jason's panicked expression as he walked, Aiden asked, "What's wrong? Why are you so flustered?"
Jason snatched the milk from Aiden's hand and glanced at it, his eyes rested on Everly. "The milk is..."
Everly, suppressing her anxiety, awkwardly elaborated, "Well, the manufacturer is gearing up to release this new milk, but they're a bit nervous about its sales potential. So, they requested that I bring some samples. I've tried it and thought it was okay, so I brought a bottle for Grandpa."
Aiden rushed to call Jason, "Jason, this milk is surprisingly good. You've got to taste it. Everly, do you have any more?"
Everly promptly shook her head. "I only brought that one bottle. If Mr. Tartt fancies a sip next time, I'll bring some for him."
Jason, seasoned from his tenure within the organization, possessed a keen eye for reading people's expressions. Sensing a hint of unease in Everly's demeanor, he turned to her and inquired, "I've never come across this brand before. Ms. Flynn, what spurred this sudden thought of bringing Mr. Aiden Flynn a milk?"
While Jason's inquiries weren't overtly probing, the weight of guilt bore heavily on Everly, particularly given her lack of experience in such matters. Those who have erred were often acutely aware of their missteps, and Everly was no exception. Everly suppressed her fear and forced herself to answer Jason, even showing signs of getting angry. "Mr. Tartt, no matter what, I've been in the Flynn family for so long, and Grandpa raised me since I was little. He saved my life. Your words are quite unpleasant, making it seem like I want to harm Grandpa."
Jason remained polite on the surface, but Everly's overreaction made him even more suspicious. Coupled with the phone call he had just had with Malcolm, he increasingly felt that something was wrong. Everly's sudden appearance was too coincidental, especially when Malcolm and Reese were both in the hospital. He believed she was avoiding attention.
He knew Malcolm's plan, but Aiden remained unknown, primarily due to his ongoing health issues.
Given Everly's longstanding position within the Flynn family, Jason chose to tread lightly in his approach. Maintaining politeness, Jason refrained from engaging in a direct argument with Everly, recognizing the need for concrete evidence before confronting her.
Casually seizing the milk from Aiden's grasp, Jason brought it to his nose, taking a subtle sniff. "This milk smells rather pleasant," he remarked with a nonchalant air.
He remained polite and didn't argue with Everly. Without evidence, it wasn't good to ask too directly.
Jason casually took the milk from Aiden's hand and sniffed it.
"This milk smells quite nice."
However, Jason could faintly smell some herbal medicine, which was different from ordinary milk. He said to Aiden, "Excuse me for a while. I'll go ask if this milk is safe to drink."
Upon hearing Jason say he was going to find a doctor, Everly hurriedly stopped him. "Mr. Tartt, if you want to ask, go ahead, but why take Grandpa's milk?" As she spoke, she tried to take the milk from Jason's hand.
Jason held it tightly as he uttered, "Ms. Flynn, why are you so nervous? I'm just worried that this newly produced milk might contain something harmful. If Mr. Aiden Flynn drinks it and something happens, what will we do?"
"What could be wrong with the milk? Did the doctor previously advise against drinking milk? Since there is no such advice, why are you saying this? Besides, Grandpa has already drunk it, and nothing has happened so far," Everly retorted.
Seeing Jason about to take the milk to the doctor, Everly panicked. While outsiders might remain oblivious, insiders would surely discern any tampering once the milk underwent scrutiny. The mere indication that an additive was present would signify the failure of her scheme.
Frustrated by Jason's disruptive behavior, Everly couldn't help but wonder why he had become such a nuisance.
Everly was very determined, but as a butler, Jason found himself constrained from directly challenging her at that moment. Given Aiden's apparent well-being, Jason reluctantly chose to let the matter slide for the time being.
"But it's still best not to drink the milk. Ms. Everly Flynn, you know I'm the only one here taking care of Mr. Aiden Flynn. If anything goes wrong, Mr. Malcolm Flynn won't let me off." Jason expressed his own difficulties in calming Everly's anger.
Everly, already feeling guilty, was relieved that Jason didn't pursue the matter. As long as the milk was taken away and not discovered, she didn't care. Whether her plan would work or not, if Aiden continued to drink, her plan would surely be exposed. She could only retreat for now and leave the rest to Vincent. She rationalized that the outcome wasn't entirely her fault but merely a result of unfortunate timing.
"Mr. Tartt, I understand. If it can't be drunk, then it can't." Everly took the milk back and said to Aiden, "Grandpa, if there's nothing else, I'll leave now."
As Everly hastily made her way towards the door, a sudden gasp escaped Aiden's lips as he clutched his chest in agony, his complexion turning paler by the second. Both Everly and Jason were taken aback, their expressions mirroring shock and concern.
"Mr. Flynn, Mr. Flynn..." Jason's urgent tone cut through the air as he rushed to Aiden's side.
"My... chest hurts," Aiden moaned in pain.
Jason didn't know what was happening, but he had to call a doctor immediately. "Wait here, I'll get a doctor right away."
Within a minute, Aiden was wheeled into the operating room. Everly stood there in stunned silence, her complexion drained of color. Her hand trembled slightly as it clutched the now ominous milk bottle.
How much did Vincent put in? Aiden only drank two or three sips. How could he react so quickly? Didn't he say it would take half a bottle to have an effect?
Amidst the turmoil, Jason's primary focus shifted entirely to Aiden's well-being, setting aside any immediate concerns regarding Everly. At this critical juncture, Aiden's life was the paramount concern, overshadowing all other considerations.
At that moment, Everly's phone buzzed with a call from Vincent. On the line, Vincent's urgent voice asked, "Did Grandpa have it?"
"He... he did. He's already been taken to the operating room." Everly was scared by the scene in front of her, her voice trembling.
Vincent was delighted. "That's great."
Everly was puzzled, questioning, "Didn't you say it would take half a bottle to have an effect? Why did Grandpa have a reaction after just one sip?"
"Grandpa doesn't even like milk. Drinking one sip is already good enough."
