Chapter 606 Why Should I Help You?
"How can it have nothing to do with her? If it weren't for her, would our family get into so much trouble?" Clara was relentless, showing no signs of stopping.
Alyssa had plenty to say when it was mentioned. "If that's the case, can we blame you, too? Who told Mr. Hawthorne to give birth to Reese? Reese is so outstanding that many men would fight over her. You're the only one who can't see her worth. Fortunately, Sebastian has some sense. Otherwise, if he were as clueless as you, how on earth will your family manage?"
Clara was so infuriated by Alyssa's words that she lost all her previous smugness.
Sebastian was tired of their bickering. "Mom, you should go back. I want to rest."
The argument was indeed annoying. Watching the women's war, Stephen felt a headache. "Since the matter is resolved and Sebastian is fine, let's go back."
Clara knew that Sebastian was different from others. Sometimes he was too stubborn, and she couldn't do anything about it.
But she wouldn't swallow this anger easily. "No matter what, the Flynn family must give us an explanation."
With that, Clara turned and walked out first.
Stephen stopped at the door and turned to Reese. "Can I have a word with you alone?"
Reese's face was calm. "I don't think we can have anything to talk about."
Stephen's attitude was no longer as tough as before. He was trying to communicate with Reese properly. "It'll only take a few minutes."
Reese remembered what Sebastian had said to her before, asking her to agree to have a meal with Stephen. But the Hawthorne family wouldn't make it that simple.
Since that was the case, if they had to meet, it shouldn't be for nothing.
Turning her head, she calmly made a request, "If you want to talk to me, at the very least, Mrs. Hawthorne must apologize to Alyssa."
Stephen agreed immediately. "No problem. Do you need it now? I can call her over to apologize to Ms. Flynn right now."
Alyssa was shocked to hear Stephen agree so readily.
Stephen must have lost his mind. How could he agree so easily now? If it were before, he would have jumped at such a request.
Alyssa curiously glanced at Stephen. "Do you have some kind of scheme?"
For the first time, Stephen smiled kindly at Alyssa, almost scaring her to death. He spoke, "What scheme could I have? No matter what, Reese is my daughter. I wouldn't harm her. Even though I couldn't bring her into the Hawthorne family, she's still my daughter."
Malcolm, standing aside, hadn't said a word. It wasn't that he couldn't handle it, but these were Reese's family matters. He knew Reese's temperament and that she wanted to handle these things herself.
If she didn't want to handle it, he would definitely help her, ensuring she wasn't wronged.
Reese wasn't about to trust Stephen easily, but getting Clara to apologize to Alyssa seemed like a fair trade. "Alright, just remember what you promised."
Stephen was thrilled. If Reese was willing to talk, it was a step in the right direction.
As Reese walked past Malcolm, he grabbed her arm. "Babe, I'll be right here waiting for you."
Reese didn't want Malcolm to stress. "I know, don't worry. I won't let him get to me."
Malcolm was worried, but not about that. He was more concerned Stephen might say something to upset Reese.
Alyssa noticed Malcolm's genuine concern. She stepped up and said, "Malcolm, don't worry. Reese can handle this."
Malcolm stayed quiet.
Stephen and Reese moved to the balcony. Reese's vibe was icy. "Alright, spill it. What do you want?"
Seeing her like this, Stephen felt a pang of guilt. "Sorry I couldn't visit you when you were hurt."
"It doesn't matter. I know I has nothing to do with you," Reese said, looking out at the gloomy, rain-soaked scenery.
Stephen sighed, "Reese, I know I messed up before, but I was really worried when I heard you were hurt. No matter what, we share blood."
Reese couldn't help but laugh, "Do you even believe that? I remember how you treated me. Not everyone is after the Hawthorne family's money. I don't need it."
With her current assets, she could live comfortably for several lifetimes, not to mention Malcolm's wealth. She didn't know where their confidence came from. On her own, the Hawthorne family couldn't compete with her.
Stephen wanted to win Reese back, so his attitude was much better than before. "Reese, we didn't intentionally keep you away. I know you're still mad at me, but you should hear me out. You saw Clara's temperament; it's really..."
The more Reese listened, the more she found Stephen hypocritical. "You must be here for a reason. You need something, don't you? We don't have much of a father-daughter relationship. It's just a bit of blood relation."
Having said this much, Stephen couldn't argue anymore and decided to be direct. "Have you heard the recent stock market news? It's expected to drop significantly. Reese, could you please hold off on signing the contract for now? You know, my company's performance hasn't been good lately."
Reese understood his meaning. Even though she felt a bit disheartened, she didn't show it.
Her eyes were cold, and a mocking smile appeared. "So, you want me to stop making money and give you the opportunity?"
Stephen nodded awkwardly. "Yes, that's what I mean."
Reese asked, "Why?"
Stephen was taken aback by Reese's sudden change in demeanor. "Huh?"
Reese raised an eyebrow. "Yes, I'm asking you, Mr. Hawthorne. Why should I give up my business to help you? Are we that close?"
