Chapter 534 Daring to Plot Against Reese
"Carol, when I went in with her, she couldn't even find her own blanket, but she could stand on that wobbly chair. You can tell," Reese pointed out.
This stuff shouldn't bother them, but they can't be sure this couple isn't after them.
Louis felt uneasy. "Reese, if these two are trouble, what about the previous owner? Where'd they go?"
"Either they were paid off or..." Reese trailed off.
She looked around. The houses were far apart, and people probably didn't go out much. If someone got killed, the neighbors might not even know. There were just too few people here.
Louis got worried too. "Reese, we need to be careful. Stay alert at night. We don't know who these two are, and we still haven't found Calvin. I take back what I said earlier."
Louis had thought Calvin was up against a tough enemy, but now he realized it was more complicated. They didn't know who these mysterious people were or what they wanted. "Yeah, you stay alert too. They might be after us. We wouldn't know if they made a move," Reese said.
If Reese had known what was coming, she wouldn't have let Calvin come. She would've handled it herself.
Carol called out, "You two, dinner's ready."
Reese and Louis exchanged a look and went inside. Louis realized he was starving. They'd left in a rush and hadn't eaten much on the plane. Seeing the food, his stomach growled.
Otis laughed, "Looks like you're hungry. Go ahead and eat."
Louis was about to dig in when Reese scolded him, "Louis, that's rude. Mrs. and Mr. Patterson haven't started yet."
Carol quickly said, "It's no big deal. We're laid back here. Eat whenever you want."
Reese insisted, "No, the host should take the first bite. My grandma always said so."
Remembering her grandma's advice about being cautious, Reese let them start first.
Louis didn't dare eat first. He knew what Reese meant. They had an understanding after all these years.
But Carol and Otis didn't move either.
Reese's eyes narrowed. "Why aren't you eating? Something wrong with the food?"
Carol and Otis exchanged a glance and laughed awkwardly. "C'mon, it's just dinner. Why'd we poison you?"
Reese raised an eyebrow, her eyes sharp. "Then why aren't you eating?"
"We... we wanted to let you, our guests, eat first. It's polite everywhere. Is there a problem with that?" Otis tried to explain.
Carol defended herself, "Exactly, we were thinking of you. And now it's our fault? We took you in, gave you food and drink, and this is how you repay us? If you think it's poisoned, don't eat it."
Seeing their persistence, Reese decided to push them.
"You said there's no problem, right? Fine!" She pulled out a stack of cash and threw it on the table. "Just take one bite."
Carol and Otis still didn't move.
Reese sneered, "So, there is poison, huh? Must be pretty strong if you're this scared."
Louis noticed Carol's expression change and got even more suspicious.
"Didn't the folks who sent you know I'm good with medicine? Did you really think you could poison me? Naive or just plain dumb?" Reese retorted.
If they were going to do this, a direct attack would've been easier.
Carol and Otis realized they were caught. Ignoring the money, they pulled knives from their waists and aimed at Reese. Before they could strike, Louis jumped into action.
"Reese, watch out!"
Given Reese's skills, this was minor. She saw Carol's move before Louis could intervene. Her eyes hardened as Carol's blade came at her neck.
Reese grabbed Carol's wrist, twisted it, and the knife fell to the ground.
Carol tried to kick Reese, but Reese was faster. They both kicked at the same time, sending each other stumbling back.
Louis was fighting Otis, and the place turned chaotic.
Reese was about to subdue Carol when Carol threw powder at her, blinding her instantly.
Carol took the chance to subdue Reese. Seeing this, Louis was furious.
"Damn it, you dare ambush Reese!" Louis kicked Carol, sending her flying.
He could tell these two were specially trained, even better than the previous ones.
Reese, now blind, tried to stand up and shouted, "Louis, get out of here!"
"No, Reese, if I leave, what about you? We leave together!"
Reese was frustrated. "Forget about me! If you don't leave now, we're both screwed."
"Even so, I'm not leaving. I'll kill these two bitches!" Louis, determined, kicked Otis, sending him flying like Carol.
He quickly helped Reese up. "Reese, are you okay?"
"I'm fine. Let's go!"
"Okay." Louis supported Reese as they headed out.
Carol shouted to Otis, "What are you standing there for? Go after them! If they escape, we get nothing!"
