Chapter 535 Escape
Otis shrugged off Louis's kick and just followed for now.
Reese's eyes burned so bad she could barely see. 'What if I go blind?' she worried.
Louis was stressed too. "Reese, they're catching up. No signal here, so we can't call for help. I'll hide you for now."
"No point. They'll find me anyway," Reese said, not wanting Louis to risk it alone.
Otis caught up fast, so Louis hid Reese behind a tree. "I'll handle him."
"Be careful."
Louis and Otis started fighting. Both were skilled, but Otis's determination scared Reese.
Even though she couldn't see, she felt the intensity of their fight. She knew Louis's style well.
Louis started to struggle, and Reese could hear him weakening. If this kept up, neither would escape.
Otis, holding a knife, was about to stab Louis when Reese jumped up and kicked Otis in the chest. A hidden weapon flew from her sleeve, hitting Otis's neck.
Otis froze, unable to move. Louis, relieved, thought about giving Reese a thumbs-up but remembered she couldn't see.
Louis got up and helped Reese. "We need to go!"
They ran far, and Louis, still worried, asked, "How long will he be out?"
"About half an hour. I didn't get it exact, so give or take," Reese replied.
If only her vision wasn't impaired, things would have gone smoother.
"Reese, you did great. We wouldn't have made it otherwise."
"Let's find a hiding place. We probably can't get out today," Reese suggested, needing to deal with her eyes first.
"Okay, take it slow."
They found an abandoned house. It was run-down but safe enough, and no one would likely come here. Unsure of the village's state, they avoided inhabited homes to prevent more trouble. Louis sat on a wobbly chair and checked his phone. "I think there's a weak signal. We can call Ryan for help."
If they didn't deal with the threat, leaving the village would be tough.
Reese was silent. When Louis turned around, he saw her treating her eyes.
"Reese, you..."
"Don't worry. I'm just trying to get the poison out so I won't go blind," Reese reassured him.
Though the powder wasn't super toxic, who knew what could happen over time.
Louis kept checking his phone for a signal. Meanwhile, Carol and Otis hadn't found Reese and Louis, and Vincent called to check in.
"Did you take care of them?" Vincent asked.
Otis, embarrassed, replied, "Sir, they got away."
Vincent was furious. "I paid you a lot, and you couldn't handle this? Didn't you say you could do it?"
"Don't worry. We'll get it done. The woman's eyes are temporarily blinded by the powder. They can't get far, and there's no signal here," Otis replied.
Otis and Carol had their own signal devices to reach Vincent; otherwise, they couldn't make calls either.
"You'd better hurry. If someone finds them, you'll be in big trouble." Vincent was worried Malcolm, who always kept tabs on Reese, might already be on his way.
Otis didn't realize the power of the people they had crossed and didn't take Vincent's words seriously. "Don't worry. With us here, they won't escape. But that chick's got some serious skills. Was she trained or something?" He could tell from her strength and agility that she wasn't ordinary.
"Yes, she used to work under Nolan, so be careful," Vincent replied.
"No wonder. Nolan's crew and the Harmony guys are the best. Of course they're well-trained," Otis commented.
If Vincent hadn't ordered Reese's elimination, Otis would have admired her skills, especially her mastery of the concealed weapon.
Vincent wasn't in the mood for small talk. "Just find them quickly, or we're all doomed."
If Malcolm found out, neither Vincent nor Otis would have a good end. Everyone knew not to mess with Reese; Malcolm was ruthless.
"Okay, don't worry. We'll do as you said. They're not going anywhere." Otis was confident.
Vincent, however, was worried and urged, "Just hurry."
They had to find Reese before Malcolm did. This was a rare opportunity.
After hanging up, Otis told Carol, "We need to hurry. If they escape, we'll be in big trouble."
Carol nodded. "Let's find them quickly."
Reese and Louis didn't sleep well throughout the night, both on guard against Otis and Carol. The situation would have been better if Reese hadn't been injured, but the reality was that she remained incapacitated, unable to see a thing.
Anyone else might have been terrified, especially in the dark, but not Reese. She had faced danger before and had anticipated this.
Unprepared for the difficulties ahead, with Calvin missing and her grandmother's death a lingering mystery, Reese faced an overwhelming burden. Nevertheless, she steeled herself to navigate through these challenges.
In the middle of the night, Reese was awakened by footsteps. She gently tapped Louis, who woke up and was about to ask what was wrong when Reese covered his mouth and nodded toward the door.
Someone seemed to have entered.
