Chapter 397 Can this even be Called a Confrontation

Reese pushed open the door to the study and indeed found Malcolm sitting at his desk, poring over documents with a fresh cup of coffee beside him. Reese couldn't help but feel a sense of resignation; Malcolm truly was a workaholic.

But in a way, Malcolm's personality was remarkably similar to Reese's. She used to be just like him, especially when she was determined to accomplish something. Even if it meant working through days and nights without sleep, Reese would see it through.

No wonder they ended up as husband and wife; it seemed to confirm the saying that only those of harmonious inclinations can journey together.

Sensing someone behind him, Malcolm knew exactly who it was. He elegantly turned the page, acknowledging Reese's presence without looking up.

"Back so soon?"

Reese was startled. She couldn't help but admire Malcolm's senses.

Reese walked in and sit on a chair.

"It's already been sent. But why don't you take a break? You worked through the whole night yesterday and didn't even get a wink of sleep."

Reese was worried that Malcolm's body couldn't take it.

Malcolm declined, "No need. I still have plenty of documents to review. The Hawthorne family will definitely take measures once they know we're launching a new project. It won't be easy to break into this industry, so I'd rather be thorough in my preparations."

Malcolm was always like this; he wouldn't act unless he was absolutely certain.

Since they had already notified the Hawthorne family, it wouldn't be right to stop now before even starting.

Reese leaned in, teasingly asking, "Do you need my help?"

Considering Malcolm had helped Reese out last night, he probably wouldn't have need an overtime today.

Malcolm still refused, saying, "No need. You should go rest. I can handle it on my own."

Women and men are different; men can handle staying up late, but it's not the same for women. Staying up late is harmful to a woman's health, especially since Reese isn't planning to have children yet. She needs to take care of her body.

Reese asked again, "Are you sure you don't need my helping hand?"

"Not at all."

"Alright, I'll go to sleep then."

As she spoke, Reese circled around Malcolm but paused beside him, then reached out and wrapped her arms around his neck, pulling him along with her.

"Get busy after you wake up."

Malcolm chuckled. "Don't you want your husband to avenge for you?"

"Sleep is more important." Reese could not let Malcolm give up his life for her, could she?

Being a widow was the last thing Reese wanted.

At Malcolm's hearing of this, a subtle smile played at the depths of his eyes, suggesting a deeper meaning.

"Sleep is important, I get it. Seems like I still haven't learned to obey my wife when it comes to staying up in the study," Malcolm quipped, a playful glint in his eyes.

As Malcolm spoke, he effortlessly shifted from passive to active, bending down to scoop Reese up into his arms. Reese's body suddenly went weightless, instinctively wrapping her arms around Malcolm's neck. Thankfully, Reese had grown accustomed to such gestures, or else she might have let out a startled cry.

Before they knew it, the two drifted off into a peaceful sleep until the afternoon.

Upon waking up, Reese's first thought was food—her stomach was growling with hunger.

Malcolm felt the same, and as they descended the stairs, they overheard Everly talking to Aiden.

"Grandpa, look at what Reese Brooks has turned my brother into. Normally, he'd be at the office by now, but today he's still in bed, sleeping until the afternoon. What a sight."

Everly remarked, her disdain for Reese evident in her tone, especially since Malcolm had changed so much since being with her, behaving unlike his usual self.

Everly had never seen anyone able to change Malcolm before. Malcolm was a principled man, steadfast in his convictions and disciplined in his actions. It seemed impossible for anyone to sway him easily.

Yet, Reese had come along and breathed new life into him. Even the way Malcolm looked at people seemed softer, less judgmental than before.

But the more Malcolm changed under Reese's influence, the stronger Everly's disapproval grew. She didn't want Reese to remain with the Flynn family. If such a disciplined man could be influenced by someone, it spoke volumes about how deeply Malcolm cared for Reese.

Aiden, too, was a traditionalist. Their generation believed in the early bird catching the worm and detested laziness, especially when two people slept together until the afternoon—it simply didn't adhere to common norms.

With a stern expression, Aiden instructed the nearby servants.

"Clora, get the two of them downstairs!"

"Yes, Mr. Flynn."

Clora was about to turn and head upstairs when she noticed Malcolm and Reese coming downstairs.

She informed Aiden, "Mr. Flynn and Mrs. Flynn have already come downstairs."

Then Reese and Malcolm approached Aiden. "Grandfather." They politely greeted.

Aiden glanced at Reese and Malcolm; his face full of displeasure.

“You two are becoming increasingly inappropriate. For what do you take the Flynn family? Have you even checked the time? Sleeping until now! Malcolm, have you forgotten all the rules of our family? Aiden's tone was stern.”

Malcolm replied seriously, "Grandfather, I haven't forgotten. It's just that Reese and I were busy working all night yesterday, and we only slept this morning."

Everly muttered beside them, "What work could you possibly be busy with? And besides, what work can't be done at the office? Who are you trying to fool?"

Malcolm cast a cold glance at Everly, and the moment she met his captivating eyes, she immediately shrank back, not daring to speak again.

Malcolm's voice was low as he continued, "Recently, there's a project from the Hawthorne family that we're interested in competing for. Reese and I reviewed it and found it intriguing. We submitted the project proposal this morning, and we should hear back by tomorrow at the latest."

Malcolm was well aware of Aiden's character. Even if Aiden were highly critical of Reese, as long as she could bring benefits to the Flynn family, he wouldn't be too antagonistic.

Aiden's expression was somewhat surprised at Malcolm's words. "You two are really confronting the Hawthorne family."

Malcolm explained, "How can you call it confrontation? We're working for the family's interests. The Flynn Group has been stuck in one industry for the past two years. What if that industry collapses one day? We need contingency plans."

Aiden snorted but didn't seem angry.

"You're good with words, but have you considered that this isn't just about expanding projects? You're making enemies with the Hawthorne family. It might not matter to you, but does it not matter to Reese? She's Stephen's daughter, after all."

Reese responded immediately, "Grandfather, you don't need to worry about this issue, nor do you need to be concerned. This idea was mine, so as long as it succeeds, there's no need to worry about my position."

Seeing Reese's composed demeanor, Everly couldn't believe that there were still people willing to help outsiders.

She couldn't help but interject, "That sounds nice now, but who would believe your lies? The Hawthorne family is your relatives; you have blood ties with them. In reality, although you're married to my brother, you're just husband and wife. Nowadays, couples can share happiness, but once there's a problem, everyone will look out for themselves. Who knows if you've colluded with the Hawthorne family to harm us, the Flynn family?"
