Chapter 436 Emergency Moment
Everhart proposed to Hugo at this moment, "Let them go, and you can deal with me however you want."
Hugo suddenly sneered. "You really do like Reese. But I'm curious if you liked her so much, why did you betray and abandon her in the first place?"
Almost everyone under Nolan knew about Everhart's betrayal of Reese, but no one spoke about it. However, that didn't mean they weren't aware. Betrayers were universally despised.
Reese originally didn't want to argue with Hugo, but hearing his words made her uncomfortable.
She frowned in irritation. "If you're going to shoot, then do it. Enough with the nonsense!"
Calvin was shocked and looked at Reese in astonishment. "Reese, don't be impulsive. There are so many of them. We can't win. It's better to let Everhart go back where he came from."
Reese turned around and slapped Calvin on the head. "Are you stupid? If he dies here today, do you think they'll let us go? It's just a matter of who dies first."
She no longer had any value to Nolan. After the last altercation with his subordinates, tensions had escalated. Moreover, Nolan probably knew that Giedon was Malcolm's uncle, and she was Malcolm's wife. Given this relationship, even if she wanted to return now, Nolan wouldn't dare use her.
Calvin didn't want to think about it anymore. He regretted not persuading Reese to stay out of Everhart's business, and now their lives were at stake.
"Reese, if it weren't for him, we wouldn't be in such a dangerous situation. Let me talk to Hugo. After all, we know each other." Saying this, Calvin walked towards Hugo.
Hugo immediately pointed his gun at Calvin, warning him. "Don't move!"
Calvin still had a playful smile but stayed put.
"Hugo, we're in the same line of work, right? I've even treated you to meals before. Look, we're all in this for the money. How much do you want? Just tell me, and we'll give you. But you have to let us go. As for Everhart, you can do whatever you want with him," Calvin said.
Hugo mocked Calvin. "Are you out of your mind, or do you think I'm out of mine? Don't you know our rules? Nolan ordered your deaths. Who'd dare let you live till tomorrow?"
"That's not how it works. We know each other. You can't just ignore that. Besides, you know Giedon is Malcolm's uncle. You know how Nolan treats you. He only cares about profit. When has he ever treated you like a person?" As Calvin spoke, he cautiously moved towards Hugo.
Reese noticed his actions. After so many years together, they had a tacit understanding.
Reese suddenly spoke up, "Hugo, I know you were punished and beaten for days by Nolan's subordinates for a mistake. He never treated you as a brother. Think about your future. Look at Everhart. He was loyal to Nolan, and look where he is now."
Hugo retorted, "That's because he made a mistake and crossed Nolan."
Though Hugo's voice was loud, Reese could see through him.
In fact, Nolan was able to make these people work for him at the risk of their lives undoubtedly because he had leverage over them. If he didn't, they would probably have run away long ago."
Reese signaled Calvin and continued speaking to Hugo. "You know Everhart didn't cross Nolan. He was framed, and Nolan knew it. Even knowing he was innocent, Nolan still wanted him dead. Hugo, think about it. If you were in his shoes, would Nolan spare you?"
"Everhart was loyal to Nolan for years. You haven't been with him that long," Reese added.
Reese's words always hit the mark, piercing straight to the heart.
Hugo was stunned. Taking advantage of his distraction, Reese sprinted forward, grabbed Hugo's wrist, and swiftly disarmed him. By the time Hugo realized it, Reese had the gun pointed at his temple.
Hugo's men panicked and aimed their guns at Reese.
Reese shouted coldly, "If you dare shoot, I'll kill him first!"
Hugo never expected Reese to disarm him so quickly.
Hugo feared death.
"Reese, don't be rash!" Hugo shouted.
"Tell them to put their guns down," Reese replied.
"What are you waiting for? Put your guns down!" Hugo said.
Hugo's men hesitated, unwilling. One of them said, "Nolan ordered us to kill them. If they don't die today, we'll be dead when we return."
Hearing this, everyone tightened their grip on their guns. No one wanted to risk their lives for others.
Hugo yelled angrily, "Are you crazy?"
"Sorry, Hugo. If sacrificing you means we can get these three, it's a good deal. Nolan won't blame us!" one said.
Calvin watched the betrayal unfold. "You guys are unbelievable!"
They were brothers a moment ago, but now became enemies.
Reese sneered. "Hugo, see? This is what happens under Nolan. He'll sacrifice you for profit. These people will end up like you. It's just a matter of time."
Hugo knew this, but it was hard to accept when it happened.
"Go ahead and shoot," Hugo said.
Reese pressed the gun harder against his temple, full of disdain. "Hugo, you're giving up your life. Your employer doesn't care about you, yet you're willing to sacrifice for him."
Hugo knew it well. "You've worked under Nolan, so you know how he operates. If I run today, I'll still end up dead. He won't let me go!"
"You can choose to follow me," Reese replied.
Reese had observed Hugo. Though impulsive, he was loyal. Knowing her identity and abilities, he still stood up to her for Nolan, showing his courage.
Hugo's heart trembled, and he looked at Reese in surprise. "You... you would take me in?"
