Chapter 595 Bury the Hatchet
After a double check-up, the doc said the same thing. Nothing was wrong about Reese.
Reese glanced at Malcolm, who was finally starting to chill out. "We good now? Can we bounce?"
"Hold up, lemme call Justin first."
"Alright."
Reese shot a text to Calvin, giving him the heads-up so he wouldn't have to keep showing up at the secret base with all the chaos going on.
Malcolm stepped into the hallway and dialed Justin. "Drive to the hospital and help Reese with the discharge papers."
Justin asked, "Is Mrs. Flynn ready?"
"I wanted her to stay a bit longer, but she’s stubborn as a mule and insisted on leaving."
If it were up to him, he’d have kept Reese in the hospital for a few more days to make sure she was 100% before letting her go.
Justin, half-joking, said, "Mr. Flynn, you realize Mrs. Flynn is just as stubborn as you, right?"
Both of them were like that—once they made up their minds, there was no changing it.
Malcolm chuckled, "Quit messing around and get it done. Also, call the housekeeper to whip up some of Reese's favorite dishes."
Even though Reese wasn’t exactly starving in the hospital, the food in the hospital didn't seem to please her.
He tried the hospital food once and thought it was gross. He couldn’t figure out how Reese managed to eat it.
Now that she was getting out, he was dead set on making sure she ate well.
Justin had already figured Malcolm’s top priority after Reese’s discharge would be to fatten her up. She did look skinnier after her hospital stay.
"Don’t sweat it, Mr. Flynn. I’ve already got the staff on standby."
"Good job. I’ll bump up your pay after this."
Malcolm had kept Justin around for years because he was sharp and perceptive Malcolm's expectation.
Hearing about the raise, Justin felt stoked. "Thanks, Mr. Flynn. I’m on my way to handle Mrs. Flynn’s discharge."
"Cool."
After hanging up, Malcolm headed back to the hospital room and found Reese on a call with Sebastian. She had it on speaker, so he could hear everything.
When Sebastian heard Reese was getting discharged, he couldn’t help but sound worried. "Reese, you sure you’re okay? Already getting out?"
"I’m fine. I’m about to turn into a couch potato lying here." She was so over the hospital smell, it made her nauseous.
"Let me come pick you up," Sebastian offered, wanting to take Reese out for a meal once she was free.
"No need, we’re heading home soon." Reese was just letting Sebastian know so he wouldn’t stress anymore.
"Alright, Reese. You go home first, and I’ll swing by later." Sebastian felt relieved knowing Reese was getting out.
He’d been worried and guilty for his mistake.
After they hung up, Justin had already sorted out the discharge papers.
Meanwhile, back at the Hawthorne family home, Sebastian had just hung up with Reese when Stephen popped up behind him, making him jump.
"Dad..."
"You were talking to Reese?" Stephen’s tone had softened a lot lately.
"Yeah, Reese is out. I wanted to pick her up, but she wants to head home first, so I gotta wait." Sebastian sounded a bit bummed out.
Stephen could tell Sebastian was really into Reese.
With all the changes happening in their industry, having Reese on their side would be a big win.
He looked at Sebastian and suddenly had a lightbulb moment. "Sebastian, how about this? When Reese is out, ask her if our family can invite her over for a meal?"
Sebastian gaped. "Dad, am I tripping, or do you have some hidden agenda?"
Given the past beef between their families, the idea of a friendly dinner sounded nuts.
What was Stephen up to?
Stephen shook his head. "No hidden agenda. I just think it’s time to bury the hatchet. Better to make peace sooner rather than later."
Sebastian rubbed his chin, thinking it over before speaking, "If you’re serious about making peace with Reese, I’d be happy. But if you’re scheming, I’m telling you to back off."
Stephen patted Sebastian’s head. "Why are you so team Reese now?"
"Because I think our family’s actions were way out of line. No matter what, Reese is still your daughter. Just because she has a different mom... Dad, if you didn’t love Reese’s mom, how could Reese even exist? Denying Reese is like denying that part of your life." Seeing his dad’s coldness, Sebastian was even more determined not to turn out like Stephen.
If he ever had a girlfriend or got married, no matter what, he’d never abandon his family.
Once married, he’d be faithful to his wife for life.
Sebastian’s words made Stephen squirm, but he knew they were true and couldn’t argue.
With just the two of them there, Stephen couldn’t talk directly to Clara, Alexander, or Nathaniel. The only one he could open up to was Sebastian.
He sighed, like he was lost in memories.
"Honestly, I do feel guilty about Reese’s mom. Back then, my situation didn’t allow them to stay with the Hawthorne family."
"Did you not think about their future at all? Dad, that’s really irresponsible."
He’d only thought about his own happiness at the time actually.
Now he got why Reese hated him so much. Anyone in her shoes would find it hard to let go, and some might even seek revenge.
Reese hadn’t made them pay a heavy price, which was already pretty merciful.
Stephen felt guilty, but if it weren’t for Reese and her mom, he wouldn’t have had such long-standing issues with Clara.
He lowered his head. "In any case, you know this family isn’t just under my control. Your mom handles most of it; I just run the company."
"Even so, you can’t let your own flesh and blood suffer outside. What are you scared of with Mom? Don’t you have us three?"
No matter what, he firmly believed that Stephen’s refusal to acknowledge his own daughter was heartless. Even if this person was his dad, he didn’t want to cover for him.
Stephen looked up, his old face full of guilt.
"So, can I ask you to tell Reese, once she’s out, that our families should have a meal together?"
