Chapter 29 Snatching the Flynn Group Project
Reese stopped dead in her tracks, clearly annoyed. "Look, I've got something super urgent. Can I fill you in when I get back?"
"Nope. Don't care what it is. It's work hours, and you're not going anywhere. Get back to your desk."
Everly's voice was loud enough to catch the attention of everyone around.
People started whispering, eager to see what would happen next.
"What's the deal? Is Reese seriously defying Miss Flynn? Does she have a death wish?"
"Yeah, Miss Flynn is Mr. Flynn's sister. Even if Reese got in through some connections, she can't compete with Miss Flynn."
"But Reese has guts. Remember Isaac last time? She was the only one who stood up to him and actually won."
"That was just luck. If she was really that good, she wouldn't be just another employee here."
"Stop changing the subject. Let's bet on whether Reese can walk out of that door today."
Someone in the crowd got excited.
"I'm in! But I'm betting she won't make it. Miss Flynn is a hard-ass."
"Yeah, I'm betting on Miss Flynn too. Reese is just an egg trying to break a stone unless she wants to get fired."
Almost everyone was betting on Everly. After all, she outranked Reese, and no one thought a subordinate could win this.
Reese heard every word and couldn't help but smirk to herself. They really underestimated her.
She didn't want to waste any more time with Everly and cut straight to the chase.
"I'll take any punishment the company throws at me. Hell, I can also give up the paycheck this month. But I've got something urgent right now."
Everly narrowed her eyes. "You might not care about your paycheck, but the company has rules. I said you can't leave today, so you can't leave!"
Her tone was ironclad, and the tension in the room was thick enough to cut with a knife.
Reese raised an eyebrow. "So, no room for negotiation?"
"Exactly!" Everly was dead set on keeping Reese here. If Reese tried to leave, Everly would have all the ammo she needed to report her to Malcolm. Breaking company rules would put Reese in hot water, and even if Malcolm wanted to protect her, he'd have to deal with the office gossip.
Reese couldn't care less about that. She was here for the project. If she got it, she was out. If not, no big deal.
Everly was clearly out to make her life difficult. No point in wasting more breath.
Her patience snapped, and she waved dismissively.
"Do whatever you want."
With that, she didn't even glance at Everly and bolted out of the office.
Everly was pleased that Reese was in trouble, but she was still fuming that Reese didn't respect her authority.
She sneered, "A country bumpkin will always be a country bumpkin. How can someone like that be fit to work here? It's a disgrace to the company."
The crowd was still reeling from the shock when someone finally broke the silence.
"Oh my God, did you see that? Reese just bolted right under Miss Flynn's nose!"
"Yeah, I saw it. No need to rub it in."
"Man, she's got some serious guts. Looks like we all lost the bet."
"Nobody bet on Reese winning, so let's just call it even."
"What a bummer. But Reese has surprised us twice now. Maybe I need to rethink my opinion of her."
Everly shot them a cold glare and snapped, "Is the company giving you too little work? Is that why you have time to gossip?"
The group immediately ducked their heads and got back to their tasks, fear evident in their eyes.
Everly didn't head back to her office. Instead, she marched straight into Malcolm's office.
Meanwhile, Reese dashed out of the building and headed to the coffee shop across the street. Calvin, drenched in sweat, looked up and saw her like she was his saving grace.
"Finally, you're here. If you didn't show up, we'd be toast."
Reese sat down, grabbed the laptop, and said confidently, "We won't be."
Calvin chuckled, "Of course not."
After all, Reese was the top hacker.
Reese's fingers flew across the keyboard, her eyes laser-focused, a stark contrast to her usual laid-back demeanor. She could switch between life and work modes like flipping a switch.
Even though it wasn't the first time Calvin had seen Reese's incredible skills, he was always blown away. Her typing speed and reaction time were off the charts.
Reese had expected a tough opponent, but she handled it in no time.
She clapped her hands together. "Done. And I snagged an order from their system as a little payback."
Calvin was in total awe. "Reese, you're a genius. We bow down to you."
"Alright, cut the crap. Just make sure to handle the order properly so they can't trace it back to us."
"Got it." Calvin took the laptop and checked the project source. His smile quickly faded.
"Reese, I think we might have a problem."
Reese frowned. "What do you mean?"
Didn't they just snag an order? They should be celebrating.
Calvin looked worried. "The order we took is from your husband's company."
Reese was stunned. "What!"
So, the project they hijacked was Malcolm's, meaning the system they hacked into belonged to the Flynn Group?
Calvin, seeing Reese's disbelief, moved the laptop closer to her. "See for yourself."
Sure enough, the screen displayed "Flynn Group." What were the odds? In such a big world, how did they end up messing with Malcolm's company?
Seeing Reese's embarrassed expression, Calvin couldn't resist teasing, "Reese, are you scared of your husband?"
To Calvin and the others, Reese was always fearless. She couldn't lose her cool now.
She straightened up and said, "Are you kidding? Why would I be afraid of him? When it comes to profit, nothing else matters."
Calvin applauded. "Well said! Reese, we can abandon anything but money."
Despite her bravado, Reese couldn't shake the uneasy feeling that had settled in her heart since finding out the other party was Malcolm's company. It was hard to put into words.
