Chapter 206 Miss Brooks is in a Flurry
Calvin shook his head. "Nope, nothing. I could only confirm he's the CEO of Flynn Group. He owns a fair bit of property and seems pretty legit as a businessman. But Malcolm joining us would be a serious boost. That guy..."
"Cough... cough..." Louis was trying to muffle his coughs, interrupting Calvin's enthusiastic spiel.
Glancing at Louis, Calvin noticed the pointed looks toward Reese, and turning to her, saw her complexion was none too happy.
Calvin, ever so blunt, couldn't read between the lines, and burst out without a filter.
"What's the big deal? Reese isn't petty, and who does Malcolm think he is anyway? He's..."
"Calvin, mind your words—he's my husband now. Insulting him is the same as disrespecting me."
Reese's expression did indeed sour.
Calvin was taken aback. "Reese, are you defending him?"
This wasn't the Reese he knew, who was always cold-hearted and clear-headed no matter what, not someone who'd turn capricious over a man she'd known for just a few months.
After Calvin spoke out, Reese was also caught off guard; why was she irked by Calvin bad-mouthing Malcolm? She acted impulsively!
Ever since she'd been with Malcolm, she seemed less like herself, yet one thing was for sure—she was fiercely protective.
Despite her surprise, Reese quickly recovered, arching her brows. "He's my husband. Of course, I'd stand up for him. Or should I expect you guys to do it?"
Kay kept nudging Calvin, who was nearly fit to burst with anger, hiding a smirk of schadenfreude.
Calvin always imagined he was Miss Brooks' favorite, having been by her side the longest. But now, Miss Brooks had her own person to look out for, stirring up what had to be jealousy.
For someone who was usually so arrogantly on top of the world, this was quite the turn of events.
Kay was laughing so hard with Louis that he could barely catch her breath.
Calvin's face turned a steely shade of blue with anger. "Reese, you're not the girl who used to love me most anymore. Now you've gone and fallen for another guy."
"Enough with the drama. I love both of you, and you both hold the same place in my heart."
"Right, but you only have one husband. Is that what you're trying to say?" Calvin pouted like a sulking sweetheart.
Reese pondered for a brief moment, then nodded. "So from now on, watch your words. Don't badmouth my husband around me, or I'll get mad."
From the sidelines, Kay couldn't resist stirring the pot. "Miss Brooks is getting fired up. Look out, everyone!"
Reese raised her hand in a stern gesture. "Let's stick to business, shall we? Cut the nonsense."
Calvin then got his thoughts back on track. "Right, about your husband, in the business world, he's a real force to be reckoned with. Not only does he have The Flynn Group, but he's involved in numerous hotshot projects as well. If he expands, just imagine..."
Calvin might have been impressed, but he knew that Reese was no pushover. If all her assets were added up, she'd undoubtedly surpass Malcolm. If only she wasn’t so low-profile, she'd be sitting at the top of the wealth rankings with no competition for the second spot.
But this wasn't the information Reese was after.
Louis also sensed something was amiss. "Malcolm managed to find out Miss Brooks was on that train. And his skills are far from ordinary. I mean, who else would dare to shoot? Most men probably don't know how to hold a gun properly. But Malcolm, he could take on ten—all without exaggerating."
Even a well-connected businessman with huge influence wouldn't dare dabble in murky affairs without solid connections.
"Holy cow! That strong? Taking on ten single-handedly? Looks like no one here could pull that off except for Reese."
Calvin hadn't expected Malcolm to be such a tough guy. If that was the case, then the man's behind-the-scenes identity must be even more enigmatic.
Reese's eyes were clear and sharp, showing a tinge of complexity.
"We have to figure out Malcolm's true identity and ensure he poses no threat to us, got it?"
Right now, it wasn't clear whether Malcolm was friend or foe, especially considering the forces backing him.
She preferred having the upper hand, not groping blindly. Knowing your enemies well is the key to always coming out on top.
Calvin nodded earnestly. "I got it, Reese."
The ringtone of Reese's phone broke through the silence. It was an unexpected call from Alyssa that made her realize she'd completely forgotten a promise.
Stepping aside, Reese slid to answer and was met with a chirpy voice on the other end.
"Reese, where are you? I'm coming to pick you up."
"Isn't it a bit early for the rush?" Reese retorted, hoping to wrap up a few more things first. Things were easier to handle here without prying eyes constantly on her.
"I was thinking we could grab lunch together before heading over there; it's almost that time anyway."
"Alright, you go ahead to the diner. I'll meet you there," Reese conceded, not quite ready to reveal her current hideout.
"Got it, I'll scout out a nearby place. This way, after we eat, we can go straight to the venue."
Alyssa's elation was practically bouncing through the phone; her glee was unmistakable.
Looks like Alyssa was giddy about introducing Reese to a contender she was particularly fond of.
"Got it."
"Then I'll let you go," Alyssa chirped before ending the call.
Pocketing her phone, Reese turned back to remind Calvin and the rest. "I've got to take off. make sure you handle everything I've laid out for you."
Calvin rushed over. "Reese, Reese, where are you off to? Take me with you."
"What for? Are you not satisfied being under enough scrutiny, or are you so fearless because Malcolm has yet to trace things back to you?"
It was up in the air whether Malcolm was onto Calvin yet. Who knows? Maybe he was already onto him and just hadn't made a move.
Calvin bowed his head, silencing any further pleas.
After Reese left with keys in hand, an annoyed Calvin flung a pillow at Kay.
"That's for blabbering all day."
"How is that my fault? You're the one who can't seem to position yourself correctly, always thinking Miss Brooks favors you the most. Look where that got you—Miss Brooks doesn't play favorites unless she's met the one. And now, it looks like she has," retorted Kay, never having seen Reese so protective over anyone before.
Calvin's face darkened. "You think it's good news? In our line of work, the last thing you want is a weak spot. Reese used to have none. No matter how she was threatened, she was impervious because she had no vulnerabilities. But if she's truly got a soft spot for that Malcolm, do you really think she'll remain as rational as before?"
That seemed unlikely.
