Chapter 250: Who Do You Think You Are?
The world seemed to spin around Sophia Linden as Victor Strong's slap left her blinking through a haze of tears. She instinctively covered her face, taking a moment to regain her composure before her eyes widened in shock and a shrill scream erupted from her lips.
"Victor Strong, have you lost your mind? How dare you strike me!"
Victor's rage was tangible, his finger jabbing accusingly towards Sophia. "If it weren't for your incessant chatter, would I be in this predicament? If I had known the kind of person you truly were, I would never have become entangled with you!"
Sophia was not one to retreat easily, and capturing Victor's attention had never been a game of coy flirtation for her, especially not now. Victor's casual demeanor amidst the turmoil sent a shiver of dread down her spine.
With the situation spiraling out of control and Victor acting as though he was trying to wash his hands of it, she had reached her limit. Her patience had shattered.
"Victor Strong, you stand there, watching me get pushed around by the newcomer without even batting an eye. What kind of man are you? You have the audacity to blame me!"
Victor's eyes widened in disbelief, as if he was witnessing a ghost.
"Do you believe that Reese is merely a new hire? Sophia, for once, use your brain! Since her arrival at our company, look at the preferential treatment she's received, her brazen behavior—doesn't it seem like she has a powerful benefactor? Remember the annual gala. She won a car, and not just any car, as her first prize. Consider the past gifts. Why did it suddenly escalate to a car when Reese arrived?"
Victor's insinuation was now clear.
A spark seemed to ignite in Sophia's eyes as she began to unravel the hidden layers of his statement, the sting on her cheek momentarily forgotten.
"Are you suggesting—that Reese has a powerful patron, like me?"
Victor rolled his eyes in exasperation. "Are you dense? How could you and Reese be in the same league?"
"What are you really trying to convey?"
Sophia had always felt something amiss about Reese, but she could never quite pinpoint it.
Victor had already divulged more than he should have; revealing any more would put his head on the chopping block with Malcolm.
He waved his hand dismissively. "Just let it go, alright? Just remember, Reese is not someone we can afford to antagonize."
But a woman's curiosity, especially one who's been through the mill like Sophia, is a hard thing to quell.
"Spit it out already! What's the deal with Reese? You’d think she owns the Flynn Group or something."
She was eager to understand how a woman from a backwater town could strut around the company as if she ruled the roost.
Victor Strong yearned to tell her that, in a twist of fate, Reese was indeed connected to the Flynn Group. She was the boss's wife.
"Get lost, I don't have time to waste on you!"
His frustration was mounting. If it weren't for the fact that Sophia Linden was a woman, he might have pinned her to the ground and given her a piece of his mind.
But what was the point? He had bigger fish to fry, more concerned with his own survival than arguing with this woman.
Sophia Linden recognized that Victor Strong was genuinely done with her. She didn't dare to persist, still feeling the sting from the slap he'd dealt her.
But she wasn't about to let Reese off the hook that easily. If it hadn’t been for her, she wouldn't have been dismissed. Now, she feared that without the Flynn Group, she wouldn't be able to secure any job. This was a grudge she needed to settle.
She was already down and out, what more did she have to lose?
Sophia shot Victor a venomous look. "I'll leave, but you've got to give me some money. You know I didn't earn much at the Flynn Group, and now I've got no income."
Victor nearly erupted into laughter at her audacity, shooting her a look of disgust.
"You're unbelievable. I'm in this predicament because of you, and now you're asking me for money? Sophia Linden, have you lost your mind?"
"I don't care; you owe me. How am I supposed to survive?"
Sophia was unyielding.
But Victor had his own problems. There was no way he was going to give her money; it was a miracle he hadn’t torn her apart already.
Their standoff continued until a security guard entered, likely alerted by the commotion.
"What's happening here?"
Seeing the guard, Victor’s face lit up as if he had spotted a lifeline. "You’re right on time. Please, escort this madwoman out of here."
The guard glanced at them. "The assistant director has requested that you both vacate the premises within ten minutes."
Victor Strong and Sophia Linden were utterly flabbergasted and, within ten minutes, they were escorted out by security after causing quite a stir at the office.
At the entrance, Victor and Sophia unexpectedly crossed paths with Reese. Reese had just stepped out for a coffee, feeling a bit sleepy and in need of a pick-me-up. Little did she know, fate would have her cross paths with Sophia.
Victor caught sight of Reese and his eyes darted away, filled with fear. If he knew Reese was Mr. Flynn's Reese, he wouldn't dare to cross her even if he had ten times the courage.
But it wasn't entirely his fault. Aside from Reese's standout looks and demeanor, her academic and professional background from HR seemed too ordinary. Malcolm was a titan; finding someone his equal hardly seemed to match his stature, let alone someone as plain as Reese.
Who knew what possessed Mr. Flynn to fancy a woman as peculiar as Reese—it was truly perplexing.
And Sophia's reaction to seeing Reese was far beyond mere anger; her gaze could've sliced Reese to pieces.
She stepped forward. "Reese, what did I ever do to you? All I did was make a few comments. Plus, those remarks weren't even my own. If you've got a beef, take it up with the responsible party. Where's your sense in venting on me?"
Reese looked back with a chilling smile and meaningful eyes.
"You seem to have misunderstood me," Reese said. "You see, once someone repeatedly crosses my line, I can no longer show them any kindness."
It was true Sophia had said a few things to Reese's face, but that was already a major transgression.
She was never one to take things lying down. Sophia had done it before, and since she insisted on heading into the line of fire, Reese felt it would be remiss not to send her off properly.
Sophia was livid at the response.
"Are you out of your mind, Reese? Office gossip is normal, isn't it? What, no one's allowed to speak about you? Who do you think you are? Just some small-town girl from Backwoods trying to act all high and mighty... Ah..."
