Chapter 567 Returning to Report
"Chill out, he can't hear us right now. We got a jamming signal going, but it won't last forever."
Sofia knew time was ticking and she couldn't waste it asking more questions.
"I'll spill everything I know, but catching Nolan ain't gonna be a walk in the park. He sent me here to stall you. If I fail, he's outta here. So, it won't help even if you know where he is now."
Nolan had everything on lock. No matter what traps Reese and the crew set, Nolan was always one step ahead.
"Nah," Reese shot back, "you still gotta tell us. At least we can guess Nolan's next move."
Sofia thought it over and saw Reese's point.
"You're right, but bet you didn't see this coming: Nolan's been here the whole time, right under your nose."
Reese didn't even flinch.
"Exactly, just like we thought. Nolan's playing the 'hide in plain sight' game."
Malcolm chimed in, "But it doesn't matter. Next, we'll make him come out of hiding. We're calling off the search."
Sofia was confused.
"You couldn't find him before, and now you're stopping the search? Won't that make it harder?"
"Nope, don't sweat it. This time, Nolan's not slipping away."
"Got a plan?" Sofia was itching to see Nolan get caught.
That way, she and her grandma would be safe.
Reese took a moment and then told Sofia, "Here's the deal: you fake throwing me off a cliff, make it look like I'm toast. It'll make Nolan drop his guard."
"But that's crazy dangerous. If you really fall, you're done for."
"Relax, you won't actually throw me. We'll stage it all. Just follow Nolan's orders. I've already dealt with his goons. Trust me, I'll keep you and your grandma safe."
When Reese made a promise, she kept it. She never promised what she couldn't deliver.
Sofia knew her mess was her own doing, not Reese's fault.
She owed Reese, and even without a safety net, she was down to help.
"Reese, I'm in. Just tell me what to do."
Reese hashed out the plan with Malcolm.
They quickly came up with a strategy, and Malcolm was on board with Reese's idea.
"Let's roll. As long as Sofia keeps her cool and doesn't slip up in front of Nolan, we're good."
If she couldn't stay calm, then...
But he had to warn her, "Sofia, going back is risky. Nolan's sharp. If our signal cuts out, he'll get suspicious. We'll come up with a cover story, but once you're back, you'll have to wing it. As for the two people with you, we've already talked to them. Given Nolan's situation, anyone with half a brain knows sticking with him is a death wish."
Sofia had made up her mind, "Don't sweat it, I got this. If I hadn't been such an idiot back then, none of this would be happening. It's on me, and I gotta deal with it. If I don't make it back, just make sure my grandma's safe."
She pulled a card from her pocket and handed it to Reese, then dropped to her knees.
"Reese, I know this feels like a backstab, but I got my reasons. I can't just stand by and watch my grandma die. I never meant to hurt you. Please, for old times' sake, take this money and get my grandma into a good nursing home so she can have some peace."
Sofia knew her grandma's situation better than anyone. Her grandma didn't have much time left and was hanging on thanks to the money Sofia sent.
Once the money dried up, so would her grandma's time.
Reese got it. If her own grandma was in the same boat, she might've done the same.
Her grandma was her only family, just like Sofia's.
"I get it. Just go do what you gotta do. Don't overthink it."
It was the only promise Reese could make to Sofia, seeing that she still had some heart and was trying to help instead of blindly following Nolan.
Sofia nodded, "Thanks."
"Don't get all formal on me. I should be thanking you for not going all out." Reese half-joked, trying to lighten the mood.
Sofia gave a bitter smile, "I know you're trying to make me feel better, but I get it. Even if I followed Nolan's orders today, you'd see right through it. Nolan's too cocky. He thinks he can take you down."
But Nolan didn't do the dirty work himself; he made her the pawn.
It showed how little Nolan valued human life.
A guy like that should've been locked up ages ago. Every day he was free was another day of trouble.
Reese was unfazed, "None of that matters."
What mattered was that she believed she could bring Nolan to justice herself.
After their talk, they sent Sofia back, along with a fake person who looked pretty convincing.
Before Sofia got out of the car, Reese handed her an envelope.
"Trust me, this might save your life when it counts."
Sofia was curious and was about to open it when Reese stopped her.
"Now's not the time. Open it when you're in a safe spot."
There were too many eyes around, and no one knew if Nolan had sent others to tail Sofia.
But Reese would do everything to protect Sofia, as she had promised.
Sofia nodded, "Got it."
She followed Reese's instructions, took the fake person to the cliff, and tossed it off in front of the two guys. Then she got back in the car and went to report to Nolan.
