Chapter 536 Who Sent You Here

Louis quickly grasped the situation, rose to his feet, snagged a nearby broomstick, and stealthily approached the door. As the door creaked open, Louis poised the stick, prepared to defend himself if needed.

The person also reacted swiftly; he caught Louis's descending stick. Louis then kicked towards the person's chest, causing him to stagger back a couple of steps before regaining balance. When he looked up, his eyes were filled with shock.

"Louis!"

"Calvin!"

Neither of them expected to meet here.

Reese heard Calvin's voice, and her pupils suddenly contracted. "Calvin..."

Calvin looked past Louis and saw Reese, almost bursting into tears. "Reese, Reese... what are you doing here?" As he spoke, he walked over and gave Reese a big hug.

Louis said from the side, "None of us could reach you by phone. We tracked your signal to this place, and Reese got worried. When we got here, we were ambushed by some unknown attackers. Reese got hurt and lost her sight. We need to get her back for treatment immediately."

If Reese really went blind, what would they do? She had such beautiful eyes.

Calvin didn't expect Reese to get hurt while looking for him. He felt a complex mix of emotions and supported Reese by the shoulder.

"Reese, why did you come? How could anything happen to me? This place is incredibly isolated; once you enter, there's no signal. I was unable to reach out to you. Plus, I just found some clues here. The person was too cunning and escaped. I was searching everywhere, thinking he might be hiding here."

Reese perked up at Calvin's words. "You mean, you found out who did it?"

"I don't know who he is yet, but I remember his face. When we get back, we might need to investigate further. I also questioned the household here, but they wouldn't admit anything. Luckily, I had the foresight to bring evidence of the money that guy paid them."

Calvin felt proud of his cleverness.

Reese frowned. "So, you're saying that person is in this village but has already escaped?"

"Yes, and he's been here for many years. No wonder the police couldn't find him. Who would come to such a remote place? Only the villagers who have lived here forever stay around," Calvin replied.

"I also heard that many fugitives hide here because there's no signal and it's isolated. You probably noticed how easy it is to get lost when you came in. If you have a poor sense of direction, you might never find your way out," added Calvin.

"Honestly, when Reese and I came in, we almost got lost. This place feels eerie. I almost thought it was haunted." Thinking about it still gave Louis goosebumps.

Seeing Calvin safe brought a wave of relief to Reese. Not knowing what had happened to her grandmother and Calvin's mysterious disappearance had weighed heavily on her mind. The uncertainty of Calvin's fate—whether he was alive or dead—haunted her. It was evident that Otis and the others were following orders, ready to eliminate her at any cost.

The choice of location for the attack was strategic. In such a remote place, even if someone met their demise, who would ever find out? Who would take notice of what transpired in the shadows of solitude?

Calvin said to Reese, "But don't worry. I got a signal device from the villagers. It might be unreliable sometimes, but it's better than nothing, right?"

Louis noticed the signal device and realized. "I was wondering how these people lived without a signal. No TV or phone, it's like they're cut off from the world."

Reese felt silent. They had to leave quickly and uncover the assassin's identity. With a multitude of enemies, pinpointing the culprit seemed impossible.

Calvin looked at Reese's eyes, feeling deeply pained. "Reese, what about your eyes? They are the windows to your soul. If you go blind, I'd give you mine."

Louis smacked Calvin on the back of the head, barely containing his laughter. "Come on, man. Your eyes practically disappear when you smile. Do you think Reese would want those tiny things?"

"Are you stupid? It's the eyeballs, not the whole eye socket!" Calvin started bickering with Louis again.

Feeling a sense of resignation, Reese found herself in a familiar situation as the banter between Calvin and Louis continued. Suddenly, a noise from outside caught her attention. She motioned for Calvin and Louis to fall silent.

"Stop talking, someone's coming," she uttered.

Calvin immediately stood in front of Reese. "Reese, don't be afraid. I'll protect you."

Otis and Carol sneaked in, looking like thieves.

Louis tapped Reese's shoulder twice. Reese nodded, understanding that Louis was signaling that Carol and Otis had found them. After all, it was the middle of the night; no one else would be here.

As soon as Carol and Otis stepped in, Calvin knocked Carol out with a stick. Otis, seeing Carol get hit, immediately jumped up and kicked at Calvin. But Calvin reacted quickly, dodging and taunting Otis.

"Miss me..."

A flicker of irritation crossed Louis's face as he couldn't stand Calvin's smug expression.

But it was payback time. Louis skillfully tripped Otis from behind, sending him crashing to the ground. In a swift move, Calvin secured him with tight knots.

Seeing Otis immobilized, Louis sneered, "Guess it's easier to sneak up on people, huh?"

In just a few moves, they had taken down Otis and Carol. It was much easier than facing them head-on before. In hindsight, it wasn't wise at all.

Reese illuminated the space with her phone, revealing the scene before them. Calvin couldn't help but marvel at Reese's ability to anticipate danger, even with her eyes condition. "Reese, you can't see, yet you knew someone was coming," he exclaimed.

Reese, unable to open her eyes, told Calvin, "Stop joking. This is serious. Let's figure out who's behind all this."

Calvin nodded quickly. "Right, this woman dared to attack Reese. Now she's in my hands." He started beating Carol, making her face swell.

Louis questioned Otis, "Spill it, who sent you?"
