Chapter 387 The Skill of Bragging
Clara looked Sophia up and down, her face full of disdain, openly mocking her.
"Do you dare to meddle in my affairs?"
Sophia was indeed young, while Clara, in terms of experience and knowledge, surpassed her by far, able to see through Sophia's situation at a glance.
Sophia herself was not as capable as others, naturally feeling inferior. Moreover, she couldn't bear to see Reese being bullied by others.
Reese understood Sophia's thoughts. She pulled Sophia behind her, standing in front of Clara.
"She may not be anything, but you are not some formidable figure either. Whether I return to the Hawthorne family or not seems to have nothing to do with you."
Clara squinted at Reese, her gaze becoming more wary. "What you're saying is laughable. How can you say it has nothing to do with me? I am the mistress of the Hawthorne family."
"Are you proud of being the mistress? You are just afraid that my return to the Hawthorne family might threaten you. Otherwise, why would you be so eager to find me?"
Clara, whose thoughts were easily deciphered by Reese, suddenly felt a bit flustered. It seemed she had underestimated this stubborn girl, with Reese knowing exactly what was on her mind.
Clara's expression changed, thinking she was dealing with a relatively easy-to-handle girl, only to find out she was hard to deal with.
"From your tone, it seems like you want to oppose me. You should also consider whether you have the strength." Clara's words were arrogant, but Reese couldn't stand those who were so self-righteous.
Clara had previously been the main culprit in driving her and her mother out, so how could she easily let it go?
Reese's eyes carried a sharp edge, making Clara feel a bit uneasy.
"What's with that look? Are you trying to imply that it's my fault for suddenly appearing in front of you?" Clara asked.
"Is that my mistake? I haven't even sought you out for driving my mother and me out of the family, but you've gone to negotiate with me. Where does your confidence come from? Stephen?" Reese responded.
While she hadn't even sought out Clara yet, the latter had taken it upon herself to bite the hook.
Clara realized she had completely underestimated Reese. This girl was truly a tough rock.
But now, if she didn't resolve matters with Reese, it would pose a significant threat to the Hawthorne family in the future.
Clara could only suppress her discomfort and say to Reese, "You are now Mrs. Flynn of the Flynn family. I believe you don't need the Hawthorne family anymore. You can live well now, so why bother?"
Seeing Clara's concern and worry about her potential return to the Hawthorne family, which could pose a threat, Reese decided to confront her.
"If you don’t want me to go back, then I really should consider whether I should tell Stephen that I'm willing to return to the Hawthorne family."
Clara felt her carefully maintained facade crumble upon hearing this.
"You dare to go against me!"
Reese's eyes sharpened, her slender figure exuding a powerful aura as she advanced toward Clara step by step.
Her words were cutting. "If it weren't for you back then, my mom wouldn't have been driven out, she wouldn't have had to beg at Kenneth's door, wouldn't have faced betrayal once more, she wouldn't have died. Ms. Hawthorne, is your heart made of iron? Or do you have no heart at all? My mom, in the Hawthorne family, didn't compete or fight, she just wanted to survive with me, but you pushed her too far!"
Who could accept being abandoned and betrayed by two men in a short period?
Just mentioning that woman made Clara grit her teeth in anger.
Stephen had been infatuated with that woman before, and if she didn't take action soon, that woman might replace her position at any time.
She had to act quickly. Fortunately, Stephen also understood their current situation and didn't blame her too much. After all, no matter how reluctant a man might be, he wouldn't ignore his interests.
Clara's anger flared up. "If it weren't for your mother interfering in our marriage, she wouldn't have caused so many problems behind her."
When Reese was pushed too much, she would adopt a defiant attitude.
She said, "In that case, let's die together. Stephen wants me to return to the Hawthorne family so we can compete properly when I return. There's no need to rush, Ms. Hawthorne."
With that, she took Sophia's hand. "Let's go eat."
"Hold on!" Clara, after all, was someone with authority in the Hawthorne family. She couldn't accept being portrayed in such a light by Reese.
Naturally, Reese wasn't afraid of her and halted her steps.
She looked back at Clara, chin raised in defiance. "Anything else?"
Clara hadn't come empty-handed today. She had already given Reese a choice. If she dared to resist, Clara would surely take other measures.
Clara couldn't allow herself to be threatened by Reese.
She showed a fierce expression. "Don't say I didn't warn you. After all, I am your elder. It seems I need to teach you a lesson."
With that, Clara signaled to the three men behind her and took a step back.
Sophia understood Clara's intentions and watched her warily.
"Do you want to resort to violence in public? Do you believe I won't call the police right away?"
As a prominent figure from a wealthy family, Clara, backed by her powerful family, had no reason to fear such threats.
"Go ahead and call the police. But by the time they arrive, you'll already be on your way to the hospital," she coldly told Sophia.
Sophia could see that Clara held power and influence, but their situations were different. They had nothing, and even if Clara's guards were to attack them, there was likely no way the police could apprehend her.
Suddenly feeling afraid, Sophia held onto Reese tightly and whispered. "Reese, should we run away?"
Reese wouldn't involve Sophia in her troubles. She pointed to a bench nearby.
"Sit there and wait for me."
"What's the use of me sitting there waiting for you?" Sophia was completely bewildered now, unable to understand what Reese was saying.
"I mean, sit there now, and when I solve these problems, we'll go eat. Otherwise, we might miss our work hours."
Sophia was shocked by this revelation, while Clara found it amusing.
"Ms. Brooks, your talent for boasting seems to outweigh your actual abilities."
Reese smirked. "I'll show you soon that my skills actually far surpass my ability to boast."
