Chapter 443 The Consequences Would Be Beyond Her Control
Reese got into Malcolm's car, and Malcolm handed her a bag from the back seat. Reese asked curiously, "What is this?"
"Your favorite dessert. I happened to see it today, so I bought some."
Reese saw that it was her favorite cheesecake. Although simple, this place made the most authentic one, using the best cheese, which was rarely seen domestically and was airlifted from abroad. The price was high, and it was hard to get.
Sometimes, even if Reese wanted to eat it, she didn't have the time to wait in line, nor did she feel comfortable asking Calvin and the others to do it for her.
She never expected Malcolm to buy it for her today, especially since she had never mentioned it to him.
She was starting to believe that if someone truly loved you, they would show it through their actions.
Reese suddenly brightened her mood and turned around, hugging Malcolm's neck. She kissed his cheek, her eyes full of joy.
"Thank you, honey," Reese said.
Malcolm curled his lips into a smile, the harshness in his eyes completely gone. This kind of tenderness only showed in front of her.
Malcolm gave a meaningful smile. "Thank me properly when we get home."
Reese knew exactly what he meant. Nowadays, she could sense his thoughts with just a look.
She didn't say anything else, half-jokingly.
"Mr. Flynn, shouldn't you be putting all your energy and thoughts into work right now? Yeah, speaking of which, that Sofia, right? I remember you two haven't seen each other in a long time. How did you suddenly get back in touch?" Malcolm asked.
He wasn't deliberately suspicious. It was just his instinct to be cautious about everything, especially given their current precarious situation, facing multiple threats.
Reese flipped through her phone and replied casually, "We ran into each other."
"And then she insisted on treating you to a meal?" Malcolm asked.
"Yeah, when we first met at the coffee shop, she mentioned it, but I had something to do and declined. She called again in the afternoon. Since she seemed genuinely grateful, I agreed," Reese added.
"She treated you at that fancy restaurant?" Malcolm questioned.
"Yes."
Malcolm frowned, focusing on this point. "Is Sofia's salary pretty high?"
"Not really, which is why I found it strange that she treated me to such an expensive meal. It wasn't necessary," Reese said.
'But some people have different ways of doing things. I can't assume they have ulterior motives because of that. Moreover, Sofia doesn't know about her situation. She is very kind to me during college and probably doesn't have any other intentions,' Reese pondered.
"You haven't been in touch with her for a long time, right? Don't you find it strange that she suddenly contacted you?" Malcolm asked.
Sofia contacted her twice in one day just to have a meal with Reese without any other requests.
Reese was reluctant to believe Sofia had any ulterior motives, given her genuine kindness during their college years.
"It's strange, but she didn't ask me much. Maybe she just wanted to treat me to a meal," Reese added.
Malcolm couldn't say for sure that Sofia had ulterior motives, but he couldn't dismiss the possibility, given Reese's special status.
"Let's have Justin investigate and see if she's been in contact with anyone recently," Malcolm said.
Reese had no objections. She had planned to do that anyway.
She just hoped Sofia hadn't done anything wrong and had no hidden agenda.
Just as they were about to arrive at the Flynn family estate, Reese received a call from Thomas, which surprised her.
Malcolm didn't say anything further.
Reese answered the call, "Grandpa Robert, long time no see."
Thomas laughed. "Indeed, it's been a while, Reese. Have you been busy lately?"
"Yes, a bit busy. Otherwise, I would have visited you sooner," Reese replied.
She had been quite tied up recently, whether with personal issues or other matters.
Thomas hadn't wanted to bother Reese, but he had no choice. There were indeed some issues only she could handle.
"Well, Reese, I really needs your help with something," Thomas said.
Reese had anticipated this. Thomas wouldn't have contacted her unless it was important. "Go ahead, Grandpa Robert."
"Recently, a patient who tried our last drug developed some issues, and the family is causing a scene," Thomas added.
Since Reese had obtained the drug and developed the plan, any issues with it would inevitably fall back on her.
Reese frowned, turning grim. Problems with the drug were a matter.
If not handled properly, it could lead to serious consequences, even fatalities. It was strange, though. The drug had been used for a long time without issues. Why now?
There had to be a problem somewhere.
Reese asked Thomas, "Grandpa Robert, have you had any new or unfamiliar people around recently?"
"No, all familiar faces. You know the lab is tightly controlled. Unauthorized people can't easily get in," Thomas said.
Then it was unclear where the problem lay. Reese couldn't figure it out right away.
But this issue couldn't wait and had to be resolved immediately.
Reese had planned to check on Alexander's projects, which were nearing completion. But now she had to put that on hold due to the drug issue.
"I'll be there right away. Grandpa Robert, please wait for me," Reese said.
"Thank you, Reese." Thomas wasn't one to bother others, but this time he had no choice. Everyone present had studied the issue for a long time without finding a solution. Only Reese could help.
"No problem. Please take care of yourself. The family might cause trouble," Reese reminded.
"Yes, we're trying to calm them down. For now, there shouldn't be any major issues, but later..." he said.
"Don't worry. I'll get there as soon as possible," Reese comforted.
After hanging up, Reese turned to speak to Malcolm, only to find that he had already turned the car around. She felt a wave of gratitude.
Malcolm said to her, "First, investigate whether someone is deliberately sabotaging. We need to clarify this matter. Otherwise, it will have a significant impact on you. Everyone knows you brought this drug back, and now that there's a problem, you're responsible."
Reese then noticed Malcolm's grim expression, his tightly clenched jaw, and the worry in his eyes.
Her heart skipped a beat. Malcolm was worried about her situation.
Reese knew that if the situation escalated, the consequences would be beyond her control.
