Chapter 201 Showing Off Driving Skills for the Wife

Their relief was palpable; they were thankful that Mr. Flynn didn’t demand a plan by nightfall, given how suddenly the situation had unfolded. It's never easy to come up with fresh strategies all of a sudden.

They owed their gratitude to whoever had messaged Mr. Flynn, a mysterious benefactor who managed to change his mood in an instant.

After receiving Malcolm's message, Reese sat on a bench by the roadside and immediately called Calvin.

At first, Calvin didn't pick up. Reese knew that he wasn’t ignoring her but was afraid to answer.

She sent him a text: Answer my call.

Just as her phone confirmed the message was sent, Calvin’s call came through. She swiped to answer.

A tremulous voice came from the other end. "Reese?"

"How dare you even call me Reese?" she fumed, still livid about today's events.

Calvin explained hesitantly, "I genuinely had no clue your husband was so clever. He had already figured out your whereabouts. His assistant is even worse. He set me up!"

"Did he find out about you?" she probed.

"Of course not. I stayed well-hidden and didn't show my face at all. But I honestly had no idea Malcolm had secretly followed you onto that train."

Reese wasn’t really blaming Calvin, but it was true that the responsibility lay with him. If he continued to handle things unreliably, it could jeopardize their operations and even cost them their lives.

Yet Reese was all about business— she wasn’t one to go easy on someone just because they had been with her for a long time.

“Calvin, you should know how crucial this mission was. You didn't just jeopardize us, you nearly screwed it up for everyone. People could've had access to better healthcare, and because of your screw-up, you could've caused a massive setback for the medical community. If it hadn't been for Malcolm stepping in to save our skins, none of us would've made it back,” she rebuked with a seriousness that demanded his full attention.

“And did you even vet the opposition properly? Why were there so many of their guys on that train?”

Calvin immediately clammed up.

Reese knew Calvin like the back of her hand. She could predict his every move just by the way he carried himself.

Suddenly, a rush of anger welled up inside Reese, her gaze sharpening with intensity. She erupted into the phone with a ferocious roar, “So you’re telling me you didn’t even have the accurate numbers before you reported back to me?”

Calvin was practically scared out of his wits by Reese’s fury; he wished he could disappear into the ground.

“Reese, I’m sorry, I swear it wasn't deliberate. The intel on their numbers was confirmed at that time. You have to believe me, I’ve always been loyal to you!”

“Loyalty doesn’t mean squat if you get me killed, but it’s not just about me. You can't endanger everyone!”

Reese was livid. If not for her current situation, she would’ve given Calvin a piece of her mind in person for such a blunder.

Calvin, on the other end, was shaking so much that his phone was practically vibrating. “Reese, I really admit my mistake. It was a lapse on my part. I promise it will never happen again.”

Reese knew scolding him further was pointless.

“Just make sure you thank Malcolm. If it wasn’t for him, Louis, Kay, and I would’ve been toast!”

Calvin’s guilt washed over him as Reese could even hear him slapping himself in penance.

“Reese, it’s my fault. I owe everyone an apology. Leave the dangerous stuff to me next time.”

“Enough! Just be more careful going forward, or you're off the team. You know our line of work. Our lives might be expendable, but we can’t afford to risk the lives of those who go through thick and thin with us.”

They called her Reese, and with that name came responsibility.

Calvin quieted down, his voice turning meek and tender with remorse, “Reese, I truly am sorry for this.”

“Cut the act. We've got someone at home who plays that game better than you. I'm not falling for it. And listen up, keep this mess under wraps. Make sure Malcolm doesn’t get wind of anything, and keep our identities secret at all costs.”

She didn't want to drag Malcolm into this mess. It was all part of her past, and besides, the cause of grandma's death hadn't been determined yet. Jason, the butler, must have some important background, which would explain why there was still no information about him after all this time.

If push came to shove, she would have to resort to that influence behind her, although she was reluctant.

"Got it, Reese." Calvin could hear the softening in Reese's voice, and he felt slightly less guilty. Her voice was soft enough for him to destroy the thoughts of throwing himself off a building.

Reese spotted Malcolm's car heading her way and said to Calvin, "Get on it."

"Reese, don't you want to talk a little more?" Calvin hoped a bit more conversation would ease his conscience, but Reese was frantic.

Reese, losing patience with Calvin's rambling today, shouted into the phone with her eyes closed, "My husband is here to pick me up. I don't want to chat anymore; hang up now!"

Calvin immediately ended the call.

From a distance, Malcolm noticed Reese. Dressed in a plain shirt and cropped jeans, slinging a chic black bag, and with her wavy hair cascading over her shoulders, her tall figure caught the eyes of many passersby.

He adjusted his glasses as if he wanted to hide Reese from the world, unwilling to share her stunning beauty with anyone.

As Malcolm pulled his car up beside her, Reese instinctively stepped back. The window rolled down, revealing Malcolm's handsome features shaded by dark sunglasses. Wearing a casual jacket, he had a certain roguish charm.

Reese opened the door and slid into the passenger seat. "Since when did you start driving so wild?"

"You still have a lot to catch up with, honey." He vividly remembered her naive appearance when she first tried driving, almost taking flight, and that memory was still fresh in his mind.

Reese glanced at him and playfully raised an eyebrow. "Need me to teach you?"

"No, I’ve got my own ways." Malcolm's pride wouldn't allow him to accept driving lessons from his wife. He was self-taught, and to avoid appearing weak in front of her, he planned to showcase his own driving skills today.

Reese sensed that he wanted to impress her with his driving. She had never seen Malcolm push a car to its limits. Most people drove by the book and couldn't really pull off anything fancy unless they were trained or naturally gifted; otherwise, it was like playing bumper cars.

A hint of amusement sparkled in her bright, clear eyes. "Well then, I'll be waiting to be impressed."
