Chapter 406 Inconsistency Between Words and Deeds

Reese ignored Everhart and walked straight in, immediately asking Hugo, "What's going on with Everhart?"

"Mr. Dixon sent him on a mission. I heard someone ambushed him, and the goods were taken away, causing Mr. Dixon to lose a lot of money. He had to teach him a lesson and keep him locked up for a few more days. Mr. Dixon said, as long as the person is alive, we can do whatever we want."

Reese heard this but remained calm on the surface. She was familiar with Nolan's methods, especially when it came to his interests.

If anything bad happened to Nolan's interests, Nolan was likely to disown everyone.

Those in this line of work have no conscience, let alone humanity. The only think that matter is profit.

Reese didn't like to get involved in these trivial matters, but she thought it strange that Everhart, who usually acted cautiously and had been under Nolan for many years without any issues, would have made such an error. How did such a big problem arise this time?

Reese just casually mentioned it to Hugo.

"Everhart Johnson is usually quite cautious and usually doesn't cause such problems. Maybe he was set up."

"I don't know. He's the only one who'd know for sure."

Hugo doesn't care about reasons. All that mattered were the results.

Reese accompanied Hugo into the foyer, where Nolan was already seated with nonchalance, drinking his tea. He seemed to be in a good mood.

Seeing Reese, Nolan eagerly said, "Come, take a seat. Hugo, prepare a cup of tea for Reese."

Despite being Nolan's right-hand man, Hugo found it unsettling being tasked with brewing tea for Reese. However, well aware of Nolan's current regard for her, he repressed his resentment and proceeded to do as instructed.

While Hugo was away, Reese went straight to the point.

"Mr. Dixon, you mentioned last time that you would tell me about my grandmother's matter. Can you tell me now?"

Nolan actually anticipated Reese's arrival a long time ago. Otherwise, he wouldn't have been so calm for so long.

Nolan also knew that Reese had been investigating her grandmother's cause of death for a long time and now that she finally had some clues, she would be willing to do anything to get to the truth, even if it meant heading straight into danger.

"Have you also decided to stay here for another year and follow the organization's arrangements?"

Reese frowned. "If I remember correctly, that wasn't a part of the deal."

Nolan smirked. "I just added it."

Nolan was still the same as before, always changing things at the last minute.

Playing with the ring on his finger, Nolan looked confident.

"So, do you agree or not?"

Reese stood up straight, a hint of coldness appearing on her previously calm face.

"We had previously arrived at a unanimous agreement. You know I don't want to stay, and now you want me to follow the organization's arrangements. Don't you think there's enough blood on my hands?"

Reese wanted to escape from the things she was forced to do before. Now, after a long time, it was like coming back to her original life. How could she willingly comply?

Over the years, Reese had been desperately trying to escape and forget those days. But it's always the case that people don't want to let you off easily, constantly reminding you of the images you don't want to face.

The emotions Reese has been suppressing were like a taut string, suddenly breaking now and engulfing her in anger. With red eyes, she looked fierce and intimidating, like a devil emerging from hell to lure souls.

Nolan sensed something was off with Reese. She had a strong temper, and he knew that he had to leverage on her weakness. Otherwise, with Reese's temperament, no one could handle her.

Nolan also knew that this would surely anger Reese, but he had no choice.

"If you just stay in the organization and do nothing, what do you think I can gain by exchanging such valuable information with you? There's nothing else that I want."

Nolan's request was for Reese to secure the maximum benefit for him during this time. Reese's abilities were remarkable, and if utilized properly, she could match anyone here.

However, the prerequisite was for Nolan to be able to control Reese.

At that moment, Hugo approached Reese with a cup of tea and placed it beside her. Reese grabbed the cup and slammed it to the ground, splashing tea everywhere.

The atmosphere suddenly tensed.

Hugo, infuriated, shouted at Reese, "Reese, what's wrong with you?"

Before Hugo could finish his sentence, Reese swiftly picked up the shards from the ground, swiftly positioning the sharp pieces against Hugo's neck. Reese's eyes were sharp, emitting a stern aura that sent shivers down one's spine just by looking at her.

Hugo didn't know whether he was scared or angry, so he cautiously probed Reese. "Reese, what are you doing? This is our territory. Do you want to commit murder here?"

Reese knew she couldn't kill Nolan at the moment, as making a move could potentially trap her here for the day. However, that didn't mean she couldn't confront Hugo to send a warning to the others.

There was a hint of bloodlust in Reese's eyes, a stark contrast to her usual cold demeanor.

"You'd better watch your tone when speaking to me in the future, or I won't hesitate to kill you!"

Hugo finally understood why Reese had suddenly turned on him. It was because of his earlier disrespectful attitude. His fiery temper had clearly provoked her.

Nolan's interest in this woman was baffling. He was making great efforts to bring her back.

Nolan's expression soured slightly, but he refrained from reprimanding Reese too harshly. He knew Reese's temper too well. If provoked further, she might actually kill Hugo.

Nolan leisurely sipped from the cup beside him, unfazed by the situation. If he were to back down now, it would be akin to conceding to Reese, jeopardizing his objectives.

After taking a sip of tea, Nolan calmly addressed Hugo. "Apologize to Reese."

Hugo felt indignant and protested. "Why should I apologize to her? She was disrespectful to you and even dared to..."

Hugo's words were cut short as he felt the sharp shard in Reese's hand press deeper. He could almost sense the shard grazing his artery.

To save his life, Hugo had no choice but to relent and bow his head to Reese. "I'm sorry, Reese."

Reese disdainfully snorted and released Hugo. "Go make me another cup."

"You..." Though Hugo was vehemently against it, he had no choice but to comply, knowing Reese's ruthless nature.

Nolan understood Reese's meaning. She was demonstrating her defiance to him, indicating that she was not to be trifled with.

However, everyone was set in their ways, including Nolan.

Nolan remained resolute in his stance. "I've made it clear to you. The choice is yours. If you don't want to know the cause of your grandmother's death, you are free to investigate on your own. I won't stop you."

This transaction was essentially mutual. Nolan believed he wasn't forcing Reese into anything.

"In that case, there's no need to trouble Mr. Dixon."

"You can't go in!"

Suddenly, a deep and chilling voice echoed in the hall as Malcolm entered with steady steps.

Reese was somewhat surprised to see Malcolm. "Why are you here?"

"If I hadn't come, would you have agreed to his demands today?"

"I..." Reese was caught off guard by Malcolm's question. Indeed, if Nolan had said a few more words just now, Reese might have actually agreed. After such a long time had passed, there was no clue about her grandmother's cause of death, and she felt very guilty.

Her grandmother was the best person in the world to Reese, and she couldn't let her grandmother die with everlasting regret.

But Malcolm's appearance brought Reese back to her senses, making her feel like she had made a wrong decision just now.

Malcolm walked up to Reese and clasped her shoulders with both hands. His eyes were solemn.

"Honey, think carefully. If your grandmother knew that you had entered this place to find out the cause of her death, do you think she would be at peace?"
