Chapter 478: As Expected of Reese
Reese's eyes narrowed, her anger flaring up. She wanted to slap the old man right then and there.
"You're a doctor. You know how serious this is. Doctors are supposed to heal, not harm. Where's your medical ethics?"
Calvin was fuming too. He had been around for almost fifty years. How could this guy say such outrageous things?
"Medical ethics? Check how many people I've saved over the years," the old man snapped defensively.
Reese's eyes glinted dangerously as she toyed with her phone. "So what? You're hurting others now. You can't make up for that."
The old man fell silent. He didn't care anymore. If hurting one person could bring his wife back, he'd do it, even if it meant jail.
Reese understood his motive but couldn't condone harming others.
Calvin turned to Reese. "Reese, stop wasting your breath. If he's not gonna talk, let's wait for his wife."
The old man went berserk. "What? You brought my wife here? Are you trying to kill her? She needs to stay in the hospital!"
Calvin snorted. "We asked nicely, but you wouldn't talk. You're old, and we didn't want to use force, so we had to try this."
Reese weighed the knife in her hand, her eyes cold. She leaned in, gripping the old man tightly. "Wanna reconsider and tell us the truth? Otherwise, your wife makes a long trip, and we can't guarantee her safety."
"You... you're despicable!"
The old man was furious but helpless, glaring at Reese.
Reese checked the time. Louis should be almost there with the wife. "You still have a chance. Confess, and I'll stop them from bringing her. But if you don't cooperate, her condition might worsen when she finds out what you've done."
"How is your behavior different from mine? Aren't you threatening someone's life too?"
"But if you'd confessed, we wouldn't have to do this."
Reese had a lot on her plate and needed this resolved fast. "I'll give you five more minutes. If you don't agree, I won't make the call."
She turned to Calvin. "Watch the time and call me in five minutes."
"Okay, Reese," Calvin said, admiring her. He'd been talking to the old man for forty minutes with no luck. Reese got him to talk in no time.
Five minutes later, Calvin reminded her, "Reese, time's up."
"Got it." Reese called Louis.
Louis answered, "Reese, I'm on my way back. I've got her, but she's really weak. What if something happens on the way..."
Reese glanced at the old man and then spoke to Louis. "Doesn't matter. If she dies, send her to the hospital. If she finds out her husband's doing this, she probably won't live long anyway. Using dirty money to save her, even if she survives, she'll be miserable."
Louis, knowing Reese well, quickly agreed. "Got it, Reese."
Reese was about to hang up when the old man suddenly shouted, "Wait..."
She paused, raising an eyebrow. "Changed your mind?"
The old man, unable to bear the thought of his wife knowing, finally gave in. "Fine, I'll tell you everything."
Reese sat back, crossing her legs. "Go ahead."
"A young guy told me to do this. I don't know who he is. We only talked by phone, and he paid in cash."
Reese and Calvin exchanged glances. No bank transfer to trace. This guy was careful.
Calvin asked, "Reese, how do we check this?"
"Simple. Get his phone and trace the number."
With their hacking skills, tracing a number was easy. The key was whether the guy used his own phone. If not, they'd have to make the old man call him and identify the voice.
After checking, Calvin shook his head. "This phone seems borrowed. Can't trace it."
Reese frowned. This guy had planned well. "Have Louis take the old lady back."
"Okay, I'll tell Louis."
Reese had to rely on the voice to identify the guy and search for his info. She had a massive database, but if he wasn't in it, they'd have trouble.
Watching Reese work, Calvin asked the old man, "Do you really not know who told you to do this?"
The old man nodded. "I'm not lying. I've told you everything."
Reese said, "Calvin, stop. He's told us everything he knows."
Calvin, frustrated, wanted to hit the old man but held back because of his age.
Reese used the voice from the old man's phone to trace the guy's location and info. It was a hassle, but they needed the truth.
After finding the info, she sent it to Calvin. "Check this address and have Louis go there. This number's been used a lot."
Frequent use meant a connection. People don't lend their phones every time.
Calvin quickly found the address. "Got it, Reese. I'll call Louis."
"Yes."
Louis received the message and quickly headed out. It wasn't far.
Reese searched her database for the guy. After hitting enter, the information popped up immediately.
Her lips curled into a smile. "Found him."
