Chapter 385 Shut Up
Grandpa Flynn was starting to worry now. If he had known Reese's background was so complicated, he should have separated them earlier to avoid the current situation.
"Go to investigate further. See if Reese is hiding something from us," he said to Everly.
Upon hearing Grandpa Flynn's words, Everly naturally felt pleased. This way, even if Malcolm were to hold her accountable in the future, he wouldn't have any way to deal with her.
"Alright, don't worry, Grandpa. I'll look into it right away."
Malcolm returned to the room, and Reese stood on the balcony, lost in thought. These past few days, he had watched her lose a lot of weight.
He walked up and wrapped his arms around her waist from behind.
"Honey."
Reese just slightly glanced sideways. "Back so soon? Did Grandpa give you a hard time?"
"You have to trust me." Malcolm naturally wouldn't tell Reese about the conflict he had with Mr. Flynn. She was already troubled enough.
"I suddenly feel like I may have made a mistake from the beginning. I shouldn't have investigated this matter," Reese sighed.
If she didn't know, perhaps the gap in her heart wouldn't be so significant right now.
"You can't blame yourself for everything. It's not your fault. It's because of them."
Malcolm was afraid Reese would end up like this, afraid she would feel uncomfortable.
She probably still held onto some hope that her family might come looking for her, but she had indeed been thinking too much.
Initially, she thought her biological father might be an ordinary person, but she was wrong.
She didn't want Malcolm to worry too much about her. "It's okay, and I don't want to think about it too much. Let's focus on our own lives."
As for the rest, it could be discussed later. Whatever the Hawthorne family wanted to do, she would face it head-on and deal with it.
Malcolm looked at Reese seriously and asked her. "Reese, do you really not want to deal with the Hawthorne family? Tell me the truth."
Malcolm wanted Reese to follow her heart and not have any regrets in her life.
Reese shook her head. "I don't know."
Her mind was in turmoil now, unsure of what decision to make.
Seeing her like this, Malcolm could guess that she might need some time to process things on her own.
He rubbed Reese's head and said tenderly and patiently. "It's okay. Take your time to think it over. But remember, whatever decision you make, I'll support you."
Reese actually appreciated Malcolm's approach. He didn't try to control or restrain her but used a gentle manner. He probably knew that his personality wasn't confrontational.
If Malcolm had been forceful with her, she would have wanted to escape.
She was increasingly grateful for Malcolm now and felt more and more dependent on him. With him by her side, everything seemed to find a resolution.
Reese had never felt this way before. She didn't know the reasons.
Malcolm gently embraced her, his warm palm caressing her back.
"Do you want to go somewhere and relax?" he asked.
"Next week, after we finish things here, we can go," she said.
Reese had indeed been feeling physically and mentally exhausted during this time. Every morning, she woke up to a variety of things waiting for her to handle.
Seeing Reese agree, Malcolm was naturally happy. Since their marriage, it seemed they hadn't gone anywhere together for leisure.
Reese wanted to go, and he would make sure everything was arranged properly.
His eyes gleamed with anticipation as he bent down to kiss Reese on the lips.
"I finally have the chance to go somewhere with you."
Reese didn't expect Malcolm to be so happy about going somewhere with her. She raised an eyebrow in disbelief.
"Do you usually not have time for leisure?" she asked.
"I'm usually busy with work, and besides, it's no fun going alone when you have someone you like."
Malcolm's words were all directed at Reese.
After exchanging a few more words with him, Reese suddenly felt much better.
Her eyes softened, different from her usual cold and distant demeanor, showing a bit of liveliness.
"Then next week, I'll fulfill your wish," she said.
"Then I thank you here for being willing to accompany me on this journey," he replied.
They smiled at each other, and Reese's mood also eased.
The next day, Reese went to work as usual, but news of her being the daughter of the Hawthorne family had spread throughout the company. As soon as she entered the office, a group of colleagues surrounded her.
"Reese, this is chocolate my friend brought from abroad. I don't know if you like it," a colleague said.
"This is the perfume I bought, and you should like it," another said.
Another showed her gift for Reese. "This is a skincare product I bought, and it has just been released. Take a look. Do you like it?"
The female colleagues in the company all sent various gifts to Reese. Their enthusiasm and treatment of her were different from before.
Facing these favors, Reese's cold face showed no joy, not even bothering to be polite.
"Sorry, please take these things back," she said.
"You should accept them."
"Yes, please accept them. This is just a small token of our appreciation. We were not good to you before, but now we are colleagues. If you need any help, just let us know."
"We are all colleagues. This is just mutual care between colleagues. Don't think too much about it."
Reese maintained her attitude. "Really, there's no need. It's already work time. Let's focus on work."
After speaking, she returned to her seat.
The other colleagues didn't expect Reese to be so dismissive, and they looked at her disdainfully.
"She's too arrogant. We are just trying to give her gifts, and she doesn't appreciate it."
"What can we do? She's now the daughter of the Hawthorne family. Can we compare to her?"
"I even wanted her to help me find a suitable job at the Hawthorne Group, but now it seems hopeless."
"We should have known earlier, and she's not who we thought she was. She's just unapproachable."
Reese heard every word they said without missing a beat, and she gave those people a cold glance.
"Now that you all know I'm the daughter of the Hawthorne family, shouldn't you pay attention to your words?"
Reese deliberately put on the airs of a Hawthorne family heiress, just wanting to shut up these gossiping people.
