Chapter 214 You Seem to Have Misunderstood

The moment Reese walked in, she overheard Grandpa Flynn discussing the matter with Everly. Her heart skipped a beat. What a coincidence! Was the Flynn family really delving into it just after Malcolm had brought it up in the car?

But the project was hers now, and there was no turning back. She'd stand her ground no matter what came her way.

Entering with Alyssa and Malcolm, Reese watched as Grandpa Flynn turned a stern, wrathful gaze toward Malcolm.

“Malcolm, what in the world has gotten into you lately?”

Everly snickered under her breath, “What else could it be? Some woman has made a fool out of him.”
Everly half expected Reese to snarl "vixen" the moment she uttered her accusation. But Reese, reading Everly's intent in her glare, froze her with a look so chilling that Everly's words jammed in her throat—not from reluctance, but fear.

Grandpa Flynn, it seemed, was past the point of entertaining the thought of Malcolm divorcing Reese. That woman was shrewd; she had Malcolm wrapped around her finger in such a short time. And if her ambitions grew, who's to say the Flynn Group wouldn't end up in her hands?

This potential menace had to be nipped in the bud; keeping Reese around was no longer an option.

But for the moment, the pressing issue was to clarify matters regarding the company. Business was, naturally, about profits first and foremost.

With a slap on the desk that conveyed his thunderous mood, Grandpa Flynn questioned Malcolm, "Did you lose that project on your own, or did you just let it slip away?"

Everly, just in on the news herself, understood the project had been snatched away, but the circumstances, muddled with rampant rumors in the company, were unclear to her.

She couldn't fathom how Malcolm, usually so confident, could let a project be wrested from him. It defied reason.

"What exactly happened?" Grandpa Flynn demanded, his anger rising palpably.

Alyssa stepped protectively in front of Malcolm as the old man's temper flared. "Grandpa, it's not my brother's fault. Someone stole it right out from under him."

"Stolen!" The color drained from Grandpa Flynn's face, turning to an ugly shade as he considered the audacity of someone daring to snatch a project from the Flynn Group. "Do they think they've got a lion's heart?"

The more he spoke, the angrier he became. He stood up, lashing out at Malcolm like a man possessed. "What have you been doing all this time? Such a promising project, and you let someone else take it? Tell me, who took it?"

He was hell-bent on settling the score. The idea that someone had the gall to poach from the Flynn Group was unfathomable. Did they no longer care about their standing in Atlanta?

"I don't know," Malcolm replied coolly.

"What do you mean, you don't know? As the CEO of the Flynn Group, you let a project get snatched right from under your nose and you don’t know?"

Grandpa Flynn was dumbfounded; his grandson's character was no mystery to him, and he knew it would take someone exceptional to co-opt anything from Malcolm.

Reese, standing at the sidelines, felt it wasn't her place to chime in, especially not to confess that she was the very culprit behind the project's hijacking.

Thus, she remained silent. After all, Malcolm could likely handle the situation.

Malcolm had his reasons though. "I felt the project wouldn't reach its full potential with us."

Grandpa Flynn was livid. "That's nonsense. What do you mean you can't play a bigger role here? Where do you think you can?"

"You're just making excuses for yourself," he added sharply.

"I'm not," Malcolm replied truthfully.

Reese knew the project really did have ample resources at their disposal and could truly make a significant impact—potentially more valuable than it was now.

Yet at this moment, Grandpa Flynn probably didn’t see it that way. He likely thought Malcolm was just making excuses to avoid bringing the project back home.

Grandpa Flynn was close to exploding. "I don’t want to hear your excuses. Just get this straight. This project, you've got to figure it out. Don’t embarrass us by not even knowing who the enemy is!"

Everly glanced at Reese, who had remained silent the whole time, which only irritated her even more.

"Reese, you are Malcolm's better half. Why aren't you chiming in with some advice? Look at this mess. The project's gone. Do you have any idea how much money the company has lost? It's more than you could earn in ten lifetimes."

Malcolm frowned. An icy aura surrounded him as he warned Everly.

"Mind your language, Everly. That's Reese you're talking about!"

Everly, cowered by Malcolm's glare, felt a sudden chill. Her boldness and resentment faded away, knowing better than to speak ill of Reese in front of Malcolm again.

But Malcolm's intervention didn't mean Reese would let it go. She had made it clear before—she wouldn't take kindly to being provoked, and the offender would surely not escape unscathed.

She sauntered over to Everly, her gaze sharp and unyielding. Although she said nothing, the sheer intensity of her presence had Everly sweating with fear.

Instinctively taking a few steps back and overwhelmed by Reese's formidable presence, even though she was familiar with Reese's temper, she hadn't anticipated feeling such fear. A deep-seated dread seemed to radiate from within her.

Seeing the fear in Everly's eyes, Reese suddenly let out a scoff, startling her even more.

Once Everly had regained her composure, she realized she had been frightened by Reese's mere laughter. "This woman's presence is toxic," she thought.

Reese spoke calmly, but her demeanor was commanding, completely overpowering Everly.

"I might not be able to make billions, but my husband sure can. Since we're married, what’s his is mine."

"You... you're far too arrogant. Remember, this is the Flynn family!" Everly retorted, her voice laced with a mix of anger and desperation.
Everly couldn't stand Reese's arrogance. The way Reese gazed at her with utter contempt was unbearable. She was accomplished in her own right—why should she be looked down upon?

Reese couldn't help but laugh after hearing Everly's complaint. "I merely stated the facts. How is that being outrageous? Besides, am I wrong? Am I not the one married to Malcolm? Or is it you who married him?”

"Reese, don't push it! Everly's Malcolm's sister! What nonsense are you spouting?" Grandpa Flynn burst out in anger towards Reese.

With a mocking laugh, Reese retorted, "Exactly, even grandpa knows you're just my husband's sister. Even if you don't like me, according to family hierarchy, you should at least respect me."

Everly's complexion turned even sour. In truth, Grandpa Flynn's words didn't help her at all; instead, they forced her to face the harsh reality that Malcolm, her brother, would always be just that—off-limits.

Feeling a bitter resentment surge within her and knowing she couldn't outwit Reese, Everly chose to say nothing more. She turned and started for the stairs.

But Reese wasn't about to let her off that easily. "Sorry, it seems you didn't get my point?"
