Chapter 498 Hidden Too Deep
Sophia was pretty tipsy and didn't know what to say, so she just listened to Reese.
After dropping Sophia off, she still felt super embarrassed and kept apologizing to Reese.
"Reese, I'm really sorry about the bar. I'll pay for the damages."
"No need, I broke it, not you."
That money was nothing to her, but for Sophia, it was two months' salary. She knew Sophia's situation wasn't great.
"But I..."
"Don't worry about it. Go upstairs and rest. You have work tomorrow."
"Alright."
Sophia's head was spinning, so she just listened to Reese.
On the way back, Malcolm asked Reese, "Are you sure it was Vincent who hooked up with Sophia?"
Reese understood what Malcolm meant. "I know, it's surprising. Given Vincent's character, it's hard to believe he'd sleep with a woman. But no matter how uptight he is, he's still a guy. Small world, huh?"
Malcolm sighed. "But if Sophia wants any other explanation, she won't get it. Vincent definitely won't take responsibility. Even if he marries, it'll be someone who can help his career."
"Yeah, I agree. That's why I didn't promise Sophia anything."
Besides, she truly believed that apart from his status, Vincent wasn't a good match for Sophia. Sophia was pure and kind, while Vincent would do anything to get what he wanted. If Sophia ended up with him, who knows how much she would suffer.
"True, it's better to let Sophia figure it out herself. Vincent is such a jerk. The girl didn't even ask him to take responsibility, and he just bailed after sleeping with her."
Seeing Malcolm so angry, Reese couldn't resist teasing him. "Looks like you're a very upright guy. You know that is wrong."
Malcolm was proud, his dark eyes full of confidence. "Of course, you should see what a good husband you have."
Reese pretended to be unimpressed.
"By the way, I need to tell you something about Vincent. Given what a scumbag he is, I've decided to make him leave the medical field."
Malcolm frowned, a bit surprised by Reese's decision.
"Honey, isn't that a bit harsh?"
Vincent only had his medical career left. If he lost that, he'd have nothing.
"Then let him leave his current practice. Malcolm, how can someone who doesn't even respect women have the right mindset to treat patients?"
Reese took a step back because of Malcolm. Otherwise, she would have made Vincent beg her in tears.
Malcolm clasped his hands together. "Thank you, honey, for showing mercy. I'll make it up to you when we get home."
Saying this, Malcolm pulled Reese into his arms, pinching her clear face. The feel of it was just perfect.
Malcolm thought his wife's skin was indeed the best.
Justin, driving in the front, felt a bit embarrassed seeing this, even though it wasn't the first time. Why didn't Malcolm feel embarrassed at all? Instead, he seemed to enjoy it.
Reese struggled in his arms, her originally pale face now slightly flushed because of Malcolm's touch. She glanced at Justin and tried to push Malcolm away.
"Move over, Justin's still here. Aren't you embarrassed? He doesn't even have a girlfriend yet."
Malcolm looked at Reese with curiosity. "So you're embarrassed because Justin doesn't have a girlfriend and you're afraid of hurting his fragile heart?"
Justin quickly chimed in, "Mr. Flynn, my heart isn't fragile. It's fine, you two continue. Reese, don't mind me."
Soon, Justin sensibly raised the partition.
Reese felt even more embarrassed and tried to hit Malcolm. Malcolm raised his arm, reminding her.
"Honey, your hits are different from others'. Be careful with your strength. I don't want to end up in the hospital."
Seeing his nonchalant attitude, Reese gave up. Malcolm leaned in to hug Reese again. She tried to break free, but he whispered in her ear.
"Don't move, or you'll get me all fired up."
He was implying something.
Reese felt particularly aggrieved. If they weren't in the car, she wouldn't have held back and would have shown Malcolm her true strength.
Malcolm could feel Reese stop struggling and then spoke again.
"Honey, has your friend contacted you recently?"
Reese thought for a moment. "You mean Sofia?"
"Yeah, didn't she treat you to a meal before? Why haven't you heard from her lately?"
Malcolm had someone investigate Sofia. In college, she had been close to Reese and was very kind. But after so many years without much contact, her sudden attentiveness was suspicious.
However, the investigation didn't reveal any issues. For now, there seemed to be no problems, but who knew what might happen in the future.
He had to eliminate any threats that could harm Reese.
Reese didn't think much of Malcolm's words and replied, "I'm not sure, maybe she's just busy."
"If she contacts you again, be cautious. I noticed her financial situation has improved recently, but her company hasn't given her a raise or bonus."
Malcolm was very wary of unfamiliar people, especially given their status. If someone were to harm them, the consequences would be severe, involving many people and things.
Hearing Malcolm's concerns, Reese became more cautious. She knew too well the pain of being betrayed by those she once trusted.
She nodded seriously. "Don't worry, I know."
"If you have any issues, tell me. Remember, I'll help you with any problem."
Malcolm was implying something, but it was unclear if Reese caught his meaning.
Reese was puzzled by his sudden words. Both of them were very sensitive when it came to people and situations.
For instance, Malcolm's current words made Reese wonder if he knew that Calvin and the others weren't on vacation but on a mission to investigate something.
Or maybe he was just being cautious due to past events.
Reese looked up, her sharp eyes scanning Malcolm, trying to read his thoughts through his micro-expressions but found nothing.
Malcolm hid his thoughts too well.
Now wasn't the time to think about this. Whether Malcolm knew or not, Calvin had to investigate the matter thoroughly.
She smiled brightly, her voice not as cold as it was with outsiders, but with a hint of coquettishness, almost sweet enough to melt Malcolm's heart.
"Got it, honey."
