Chapter 442 Betrayal

"Then you need to be careful. If Reese finds out, you should know her temper. She won't let it go." Joseph said this specifically to make sure Sofia wouldn't try any tricks in front of them.

Sofia was extremely nervous now, worried that what she was about to do would affect Reese. She didn't want to betray Reese.

But given the current situation, she had no other choice.

Nolan saw that it was getting late, and they needed to act quickly. They couldn't wait for Reese to come up with a way to deal with them. By then, they would be in a very passive position.

Right now, Reese wasn't alone. She had the Flynn family behind her, and Malcolm had Giedon backing him.

If these three forces joined together, Nolan wasn't sure he could handle it. So, he had to strike first.

After letting Sofia go, she was somewhat depressed on her way back. Her mind was a mess. But when she looked down at the $500,000, she felt a bit relieved. At least her grandma's surgery was covered.

The doctor had said that if they could gather the surgery fee, her grandma could live another ten years. These ten years were incredibly precious to Sofia.

Now, she could only feel sorry for Reese.

Immediately, Sofia called the doctor. "Doctor, I'm coming to the hospital now. Yes, I've gathered the surgery fees. Please arrange the surgery for my grandma as soon as possible."

After hanging up, she called Reese. No matter what, she got the $500,000 thanks to Reese. Without Reese, those people wouldn't have given her the money.

Her grandma's surgery fee wouldn't have been gathered so quickly.

Reese answered quickly, "What's up?"

"Nothing much, Reese. I just wanted to ask when you're free. I still want to treat you to a meal," Sofia said.

Reese didn't understand why Sofia was so insistent on treating her to this meal. "I might be quite busy lately. No need to treat me. I've sensed your thanks."

"No, Reese, I'm really grateful that you helped me find that job last time. I originally wanted to text you. Considering you might be busy and not see it, I called instead," Sofia added.

Reese frowned, feeling that something was off with Sofia. Was she really so eager to treat her to a meal?

"But I..." Reese replied.

She wanted to say she might not have time.

"It's okay. Whenever you're free, I can wait for you. You have to get off work, and if you don't work overtime, I'll wait for you at your company. Just send me the address." Sofia felt uneasy if she didn't treat Reese to a meal.

Seeing Sofia's insistence, Reese decided to go. "Alright, find a place, and I'll come over."

Sofia nodded repeatedly. "That's great, thank you for accepting my invitation. Let's go with the usual, eating what you used to like."

"Okay." Reese wasn't picky about food.

After deciding, Sofia hung up and went to the hospital to settle her grandma's surgery, paying the fees and feeling relieved.

After choosing a place, she sent it to Reese.

Reese had just finished discussing with Calvin and reminded him again as they left.

"Handle Everhart's situation well. Don't let Nolan find him, or our efforts will be in vain," Reese reminded.

"Got it, Reese. By the way, where are you going?" Calvin saw Reese busy but not in a work-related way and asked curiously.

"Meeting a college friend," Reese answered.

"A girl?" Calvin immediately perked up at this.

Reese rolled her eyes at Calvin. "Can you stop thinking about girls all the time? Didn't I introduce a girl to you on Facebook last time? Didn't you chat?"

Calvin pouted. "That girl was so boring."

"Then don't look for one. Focus on your work. If a girl falls into your hands, she won't have a good outcome. Don't toy with others' feelings."

Reese hated people who weren't serious about relationships, but she had no reason to interfere with Calvin. It was his business, and she could only offer advice.

"I understand, Reese. Am I the type to toy with feelings? So, Reese, can you introduce that friend to me or take me along?" Calvin asked.

"No." Reese refused bluntly.

Calvin shrugged helplessly and gave up.

When Reese arrived, she found that Sofia had chosen a rather expensive place. She frowned.

Since when did Sofia have so much money? Reese vaguely remembered that Sofia's family wasn't well off, and she was working hard at her new company.

Sofia came out and saw Reese.

She waved eagerly. "Reese..."

Reese walked over. "Why choose such an expensive place? We could have just grabbed a bite."

"It's okay. We haven't seen each other for so long. You treated me a lot in school. Now that I'm working and have money, I should treat you."

"Alright, let's go in." Reese wanted to eat and leave early. She still had work to finish. She had some workaholic tendencies, similar to Malcolm.

After sitting down, Sofia had already ordered the dishes, all of Reese's favorites, which surprised Reese.

She took a sip of water. "It's impressive that you remember what I like to eat."

"Of course, we spent years in college together. I remember your preferences."

"Thank you," Reese said.

Having someone who remembered her made Reese feel warm inside.

As they ate, Sofia asked, "Reese, where have you been all these years after college? You didn't secretly go for further studies, did you?"

"No, just busy with work," Reese replied.

"So, you must be very successful now?" Sofia asked.

"Not bad. I work at the Flynn Group and occasionally take on some freelance work." Reese kept her answers simple, not revealing much about her work nature, as it wouldn't be good for her.

Sofia looked envious. "Reese, I really admire you. You've married such a good husband and have both love and career. Our classmates used to laugh at you, but you're the real winner."

Reese didn't say much. They chatted casually, and Sofia kept thanking Reese.

"Reese, if I often ask you out for meals, will you find it annoying?" Sofia asked.

"If I have time, it's fine." Reese's response was tactful.

Sofia was happy that Reese didn't refuse.

"That's great. I'll come to find you whenever I have time. Don't find me annoying," Sofia added.

Reese received a call from Malcolm midway.

"Honey, where are you?" Malcolm asked.

"I'm out having dinner with a friend." Reese was almost done eating and ready to leave.

"I'm out too. Where are you?" Malcolm continued.

"I'm at TradeLink Hub," Reese replied.

"See, honey, I knew we had a telepathic connection."

Reese was surprised. "You're here, too?"

"Just finished dining with a client," Malcolm said.

Reese looked around. "Then come pick me up if you're free."

"Okay, I see you." Malcolm hung up. Reese turned to see him standing across the street, looking pleased. Reese guessed he had closed the deal.

Reese's cold demeanor softened as she walked over. "I thought you were at the office today."

"I was in the morning. By the way, Alyssa said she hasn't seen you lately. She wants you to visit her studio and give her some suggestions," Malcolm added.

"You saw her today?" Reese asked.

Reese realized she hadn't seen Alyssa for a while.

"Ran into her outside. I checked out her studio. It's pretty nice. She just finds it hard to manage newbies and needs your experienced guidance," Malcolm said.

After all, Reese was sought after by several teams back then.

Sofia walked over, and Reese introduced, "This is my college friend, the one you helped find a job for."

Malcolm nodded politely, the warmth he reserved for Reese absent. "Hi, I'm Reese's husband."

Sofia smiled awkwardly. "I know, Mr. Flynn. We met last time. Reese is lucky to have you."

Malcolm modestly put his arm around Reese. "Meeting Reese is my luck."

Sofia felt a pang of envy. Reese was beautiful and had a powerful family behind her. But she didn't know Reese's success was due to her abilities.

Reese didn't rely on a man to get where she was.

Sofia didn't want to be a third wheel. She had reconnected with Reese and could keep in touch. Some things required timely action.

"If there's nothing else, I'll leave. Let's meet again," Sofia said.

"Yes, next time." Reese nodded lightly, watching Sofia leave.

Once in the car, Sofia immediately called Nolan.

"I met her. She doesn't seem to dislike me, but she wasn't willing to talk much about her work. I didn't push, fearing I'd expose myself," Sofia said.

"That's fine. Your job is to gain her trust. Things will be easier then," Nolan replied.

"I understand, but I still insist you don't make me harm her," Sofia added.

She couldn't and wouldn't do it. If not for her grandma's surgery, Sofia wouldn't have agreed.

"Just follow the plan. Don't stress," Nolan warned.

"But..." Sofia said.

"Goodbye." Nolan hung up before Sofia could finish.

Staring at her phone, Sofia felt increasingly burdened.
