Chapter 494: Date

"Th-there's no problem at all. I'll get right on it."

Justin didn't dare say no. Any a hint of hesitation, and Malcolm would probably kick him out.

"Hurry up, then!"

Malcolm snapped impatiently.

"Yes, sir."

Justin hung up, feeling a headache coming on. He wished Malcolm wasn't so obsessed with his wife. It caused him a lot of trouble.

Reese had sent Calvin on a "vacation," but in reality, it was to investigate her grandmother's accident. Nolan hadn't made any moves yet, and she knew it would take time to bring him down.

Not finding the person who killed her grandmother made Reese feel guilty.

Her grandmother's accident was suspicious. Reese found that even though it was a downhill slope, the driver could have braked. Instead, he floored the gas.

The driver told the police he was drunk and mistook the gas pedal for the brake, causing her grandmother's death.

Reese didn't believe it; there were too many red flags.

She didn't tell Malcolm to avoid tipping off the other side and to keep him from worrying.

If Malcolm knew she asked Calvin to investigate her grandmother's death, he might drop everything to solve this.

She didn't want to burden anyone with her problems.

As Reese went upstairs, people greeted her.

"Ms. Brooks."

"Hello, Ms. Brooks."

"Ms. Brooks, you look beautiful today."

"Ms. Brooks, is that a new outfit?"

Reese just nodded slightly in response to these flattering remarks.

Once back in her office, she called Calvin.

"Reese."

"How's the investigation going?"

"I might need to stay here a few more days. I asked the driver's family and found out that a month after your grandmother's funeral, someone started sending them money. It was a substantial amount, labeled as living expenses and compensation, telling them to use it without worry."

Reese immediately caught the key point: "That money is definitely suspicious. Living expenses aside, why add the word 'compensation'? Compensation for what, and why?"

The implication was clear.

"Reese, the driver is already in jail. We investigated his background; he's just an ordinary delivery driver."

Reese smirked coldly, twirling a pen between her fingers.

"That's why the money is suspicious. An ordinary delivery driver makes it look like an accidental death rather than a premeditated murder. It's hard to say who the mastermind is."

"Yes, it's strange. We don't have any suspects, and we don't know much about your grandmother's past."

Calvin only recently learned from Reese that her grandmother had an extraordinary background, explaning why Reese was so capable.

Reese thought for a moment: "Send me the evidence you've gathered. I'll organize them. Take a break today; don't overthink it."

"Don't worry, Reese. My brain is very sharp."

Reese teased, "Not necessarily."

Calvin was speechless.

Before hanging up, Reese reminded him.

"Stay safe. If you encounter danger, prioritize your safety."

"Got it, Reese."

After hanging up, Reese looked at the towering buildings outside, lost in thought. She had been investigating her grandmother's death for a long time. With these new leads she hoped to uncover the truth.

Hopefully, she could.

Calvin sent over the info. After reviewing it, Reese noticed the driver had been in frequent contact with someone two months before the accident. It was easy to miss because it was just a breakfast shop owner.

It seemed normal for someone to grab breakfast daily, but the key was they met a few times at night, and the owner had transferred money to the driver. The reason was unclear.

Plus, there was no sign the driver was helping the owner with deliveries. After the driver got arrested, the breakfast shop shut down. Calvin had asked around and was told the owner went back to the countryside, but no one knew for sure.

It seemed necessary to dig deeper into the breakfast shop owner.

Reese looked up the owner's basic information and called Louis.

"Louis, I sent you some info. Can you check it out when you have time?"

"Got it, Reese. I'll look into it right now. Don't hang up; it won't take long."

Louis quickly skimmed the information. The breakfast shop owner didn't seem to have a complicated background, so it should be easy to investigate.

"Okay, I won't hang up."

But Louis took longer than expected. Reese checked the time. Given Louis's speed, if the person had a simple background, it wouldn't take this long. Twenty minutes had passed.

She called out, "Louis."

"Reese, you might need to use other channels to investigate this person. I can't find any relevant info. I suspect he might not be a simple person. Can I ask why you're suddenly investigating a breakfast shop owner?"

"Because I asked Calvin to investigate my grandmother's death and found that the driver had frequent contact with this breakfast shop owner two months before the accident."

Louis was puzzled, "Isn't it normal for a delivery driver to have frequent contact with a breakfast shop owner? Maybe he was delivering something for him."

"No, they had no business dealings. The key is that the breakfast shop owner inexplicably transferred money to the driver. After the accident, the breakfast shop closed down."

Louis finally got it.

"Are you suspecting that the breakfast shop owner might have instructed the driver to cause the accident?"

"We're not sure yet, but it needs further investigation."

There might be more to it.

Louis understood the importance: "Got it, Reese. I'll investigate right away."

"Let me know what you find. I'll also look into it."

"Okay."

Reese spent the whole day on this and found nothing by evening.

She looked at the night outside and stretched when there was a knock on the door.

"Come in."

"Mrs. Flynn, Mr. Flynn asked me to bring you some food."

Reese looked up and saw it was Justin.

She was puzzled, "How did he know I hadn't eaten?"

Justin smiled, "Maybe Mr. Flynn and Mrs. Flynn have a special connection."

Reese's stomach growled.

"Your timing is perfect. Otherwise, I might have missed my date with Sophia."

She received a message from Sophia at six, asking when she would be done.

Reese had roughly replied that it would be before nine and hadn't responded since.

Justin placed the lunchbox on Reese's desk, "Mr. Flynn probably considered that."

"Is he done with his work? If not, I can call a driver tonight; he doesn't need to pick me up."

"Mr. Flynn should be done. It's just some trivial stuff and arranging press releases. Given recent company issues, he needs to explain to the partners."
