Chapter 96 Miss Brooks Arrives
Reese looked at Charles with disdain. Dr. Robert had been too kind-hearted, taking the fall to protect his honor, and now Charles was betraying him and attempting to shift the blame.
If she didn't speak out for Dr. Robert today, she would feel as if she were betraying the kindness he had shown her over the years.
"Maybe it's time you dug up those old case files and really looked into who messed up, huh?"
Charles hadn't expected this fiery young woman to be so tenacious. He decided to pull out the big guns.
"No one's going to listen to your nonsense here. Security! Get her out of here, pronto! The standards for this seminar have really dropped if just anyone can stroll in."
Megan stood up and yelled toward the door, "Who let this troublemaker in? Get her out now!"
The security guards, clueless about the situation, only saw a young woman in her twenties arguing with a medical big shot. Obviously, they didn't want to get on Charles’ bad side, who held the high ground in society.
Two guards quickly approached, reaching out to haul Reese away.
"Hold on, gentlemen," Remington hastily interjected. "I'd advise you not to touch her if you don't fancy a hospital visit yourself."
But security wasn't about to take Remington's advice.
"If she's causing trouble, she's got to go," one of them said decisively.
Remington sneered and took a few steps back.
"Hey, it's your funeral. Don't say I didn't warn you."
As the two guards reached for Reese, planning to escort her out, she hadn't even been touched when she used the table to propel herself into a roundhouse kick, sending them tumbling to the floor.
Megan had never imagined this seemingly unimpressive girl would be so skilled in combat; she simply couldn't stay, as she could jeopardize their plans.
She shouted at the rest of the security team, "This girl's here to cause mayhem! What are you waiting for? Throw her out already!"
The guards, too, were now convinced Reese was there to start trouble, especially since she had resorted to violence.
Remington had seen Reese in action before, noticing her fierce aura and absence of fear; he was confident she could handle these men. And if worst came to worst, he could still call Malcolm in time.
The guards circled around Reese, who stood amidst them, her piercing gaze fixed on Charles.
"So, the moment someone speaks the truth and hits a nerve, you can't wait to have security throw them out?" She challenged.
Charles's face reddened with anger.
"That's slander, and I'm getting my lawyer!"
"Fine by me. Let's not get physical—bring on the lawyers," Reese retorted, not in the mood to fight anymore. She was already nursing wounds from a previous scuffle and didn't need fresh ones to explain to Malcolm.
At the thought of Malcolm, a realization struck Reese—why was she even thinking about him right now?
Megan quickly assessed the situation, realizing that even if all the security guards went at Reese together, it would be futile.
"In my opinion, we should call the cops. They're the only ones who can handle people who cause trouble like this."
Upon hearing the suggestion to involve the police, Remington felt a twinge of panic. Sure, Reese may have been in the right, but she had thrown punches, and there were several witnesses to that fact here. If they ended up at the police station, even if Reese had a solid case, the fact that she hit someone would be hard to justify. Complicating matters, Megan, Charles' daughter, had a boyfriend who apparently worked at the local police precinct. When it came down to it, they would likely support their own, leaving Reese out in the cold.
Remington knew he didn't want his grandfather, at his age, to get wrapped up in this mess. The only person who could save Reese now was Malcolm.
Quietly, he slipped his phone out of his pocket, found Malcolm's assistant's number, and dialed it.
When Justin received the call from Remington, he thought he'd misheard. After confirming the issue, he rushed to Malcolm's office. Malcolm was in the middle of a business negotiation when Justin barged in, causing immediate discomfort.
The man frowned, a chill emanating from his gaze.
"Justin, have you forgotten the rules of this company?"
"It's not that, Mr. Flynn. I just got a call from Robert's grandson, Remington. Reese is in a fight again."
Yes, again. Reese had just brawled with some thugs at noon, and now she was at it a second time. What kind of woman had Mr. Flynn ended up marrying? While other men's wives were gentle and virtuous, constantly thinking about how to please their husbands, Mr. Flynn's wife was out there causing him trouble day after day.
If the other Flynns got wind of this, they would be furious.
Upon hearing Justin's news, Malcolm's grip on his pen tightened momentarily before his face turned grim.
"Where is she?"
"At the M Hotel."
Malcolm got to his feet quickly, "Victor, I apologize, but my wife is in trouble, and I need to go."
Victor was still perplexed.
"But Mr. Flynn, our contract..."
"We'll sign it another day; I have to leave." Malcolm left Victor hanging and walked out with Justin.
What surprised Victor the most was that Mr. Flynn was supposed to be paralyzed, yet he had just stood up with ease, looking anything but handicapped. Were the rumors false?
And when did Malcolm get married? Why was there no news about it?
Meanwhile, Megan was on the verge of calling the police, when Charles stepped in, playing the good guy.
"Megan, it's Dr. Robert's seminar today, and there's a ton of media around. Let's not turn this into a spectacle. The poor girl was probably duped. Give her a chance. If she apologizes for what she said, we'll let it slide,” Charles reasoned, his voice measured to avoid any unnecessary drama.
Megan instantly grasped the subtext. If the girl apologized, it would admit her accusations were false—casting doubt not only on her integrity but on Robert's as well. Who would idolize him then? Who would see him as a respected leader in the medical community?
This was an opportunity for Megan to shoot two birds with one stone, and she wasn't about to let it pass.
Feigning magnanimity, she sighed, "Considering you might also be a victim, we'll go by my father's suggestion. In front of the media and everyone here, tell us how Dr. Robert orchestrated this frame-up against my father, and we won't hold it against you."
On stage, Robert almost fainted with frustration. His body swayed. Remington, quick to read the room, dashed to the stage to support him.
"Grandpa, are you okay?" He asked, concern in his voice.
Robert pointed through the crowd at Charles, barely choking out his words, his face ashen. "You... you're spouting nonsense. I thought our past friendship meant something when I chose not to expose your mistakes. And now, you dare to accuse me!"
Remington steadied Robert, fearing he might collapse with anger.
"Grandpa, don't argue with an ingrate. It's not worth it. Justice will prevail in the end and then we’ll see who’s right and who’s wrong."
Reese usually didn't involve herself in these matters, but she was not about to stand aside when it came to Dr. Robert.
She challenged them confidently, "Alright, you want the truth? Everything I said is true. Charles, do you have the guts to accompany me back to the hospital to double-check that patient's record? It's all there, intact. Are you brave enough?"
To onlookers, Reese seemed at a disadvantage, but her gaze was sharp and her voice full of conviction, leaving Charles breathless.
He couldn't possibly revisit the hospital to check the medical records with Reese; it would be like putting the blame back on himself.
No one there seemed to support this young girl. Charles didn't believe for a second that someone so naive could cause this much trouble.
"If she refuses to tell the truth, let's have the owner throw her out and then contact a lawyer to sue her for slander."
Charles exchanged a knowing look with Megan. Without hesitation, she pulled out her smartphone and called the establishment's owner, who happened to be one of her admirers, although she had never reciprocated his interest.
Handling a troublesome girl like this would be a piece of cake.
In just a few minutes, Zack showed up, his eyes brimming with adoration at the sight of Megan.
He approached her and asked, "What's going on, Megan? I heard someone caused a commotion and even got physical with our hotel's security?"
"It's that little punk over there. Get someone to kick her out, will you?" Megan pointed towards a girl not too far off with a smug look in her eyes.
She was curious to see what the youngster would do next. Sure, the kid might have some moves, but that didn't mean she could run amok.
So, what if Robert was a big shot in the medical field? He practically had one foot in the grave already. What could he possibly do to help this brat?
When Zack's gaze followed Megan's pointing finger and landed on Reese's face, he was stopped dead in his tracks.
Well, this...
