Chapter 571 Too Coincidental
Calvin could see Reese was warming up to Sebastian. Normally, with Reese's fiery temper, someone like Sebastian would've been in deep trouble for acting out.
But this time, Reese just gave him a little scare. For her, that was like giving him a free pass.
Back in the day, when Reese was running the business world, she was unstoppable.
Reese was too swamped with to have time to mess around.
She told Sebastian, "Get your stuff ready. Need a pic of Nolan? He might recognize you."
Nolan knew Sebastian was his bro, so it wouldn't be hard to put two and two together.
But hey, they moved their races around a lot, so bumping into each other wasn't that weird.
Sebastian said, "No need for a pic. I've seen him. We even had a spat outside the police station last time."
Reese remembered, "Oh right, just be careful."
Sebastian responded, "Don't sweat it, he can't touch me."
Seeing Reese worry about him made Sebastian feel all warm and fuzzy inside.
Reese said in a bossy tone, "Hand over your phone."
Sebastian gave it to her without a second thought.
Reese took it apart, swapped the chip, and handed it back.
"There's a tracker in there now, so I can keep tabs on you and make sure you're safe. Also, this little gadget goes in your molar. If you're in trouble, tap your tooth three times and we'll find you in five seconds."
Sebastian asked in confusion, "Reese, isn't this overkill? Two trackers? Afraid Nolan won't find me?"
Reese said in a matter-of-fact tone, "It's so if one gets found, you still have a backup."
No matter what, she had to think ahead to keep Sebastian safe.
Calvin, hanging around, said, "Reese, since when do you worry this much? You're more concerned about him than yourself."
Reese got what Calvin was hinting at and shot back seriously.
"Are you dumb? If something happens to Sebastian, the Hawthorne family will come after me. It's my job to keep you safe, so deal with it."
It was different. Sebastian had his family backing him, while Calvin only had Reese.
Calvin was taken aback, then felt a warm glow inside. Even though Reese sounded harsh, he knew she saw him as family.
His safety, his life, was Reese's responsibility. Reese was his family.
Calvin replied, "Got it, Reese."
Reese ordered, "Good. Now go test it and see if it works. I made it myself but haven't tried it yet. It should work even without a signal."
"Alright, I'm on it." Calvin couldn't argue with Reese. What could he do?
Reese was just that awesome.
Reese told Sebastian, "If you run into any trouble, let me know. If things get dangerous, put your safety first."
"I know, Reese. I'm a pro, nothing's gonna happen. Chill out." Seeing Reese so worried about him made Sebastian feel all warm and fuzzy inside.
A sister covering for him was actually sweet.
After Calvin wrapped up his work, he came over and popped the chip into Sebastian's molar.
Sebastian bit down and winced. "Why does this feel so weird? It's kinda annoying."
"Of course it's annoying. It's in your tooth, dude. What did you expect?" Calvin shot him a look of pure disdain.
Reese checked her watch. "We gotta bounce. If we hang around any longer, we might actually get caught."
They were out in the open, while Nolan was lurking in the shadows.
Sebastian said, "Reese, you be careful, too."
"Let's go." Reese didn't respond directly but appreciated the concern.
After Reese and Calvin left, Reese still felt uneasy. "Tomorrow, send someone to tail them. I have a bad feeling."
Calvin rubbed his forehead, exasperated. "Reese, this isn't like you. Who have you ever been scared of? Even if the world was ending, you'd be chill. It's just Nolan, and the cops are already on his tail. What trouble can he cause?"
"Alright, I hope nothing happens. Besides, their team moves around a lot. Even if Nolan finds them, all he can do is run. He's got no one left to trust." Reese believed this. Nolan had treated his people like crap, and now he was paying for it.
Hearing Calvin's words, Reese finally felt a bit better. "Anyway, keep an eye on Sebastian, especially the tracker. I don't want any slip-ups."
"Got it." Calvin rarely saw Reese this tense. The old Reese was unshakeable, never this nervous.
She didn't care about her own life, but she was super worried about others.
Back at the Flynn family home, Malcolm had already returned. Seeing Reese's tired face, he walked up behind her and wrapped his arms around her. "Honey, rough day?"
"Not too bad. I've set things up with Sebastian. We start tomorrow. But I'm worried I dragged him into this mess."
Reese rubbed her temples in frustration. Nolan was on the run and would eliminate any threats to him.
Justin walked in, "Mr. Flynn, Mrs. Flynn, we've found out that Sofia got a message from Nolan and is planning to meet him."
Reese shot up from her chair. "Just now?"
Justin reported, "Yeah, and Sofia's already on the move. We need to track her down."
A sudden sense of foreboding struck Reese.
Reese spoke up, "We just met with Sebastian this afternoon and now Nolan's contacting Sofia. Could he know I'm still alive?"
Malcolm voiced, "That shouldn't be possible. I've set everything up perfectly. If Nolan investigates, he won't find anything. He wouldn't send someone to search the cliffside."
Reese explained, "But don't you think it's too coincidental. We just met with Sebastian and now Nolan's reaching out to Sofia, and she's getting ready to meet him."
It was too coincidental. She couldn't be sure if Nolan had sensed something or if he was just impatient to continue his revenge plan with Sofia.
