Chapter 105 Not a Couple?
Emma was the first to pop open the back door of the car.
George, on the other hand, got out and opened the front passenger door for her.
"Ms. Taylor, you think I'm your chauffeur now?" George joked.
"Wouldn't dream of it," Emma shot back, not really wanting to chat.
"Where to?"
"Happy Hearts Kids Clinic."
Emma wasn't in the mood to talk, and George wasn't exactly talkative person either. The car ride was filled with nothing but the hum of the engine and the tires on the road, making the silence feel even heavier.
In just over ten minutes, they pulled up to the Happy Hearts Kids Clinic.
Emma was about to say goodbye when she noticed George getting out too, heading into the hospital with her.
She looked puzzled.
"Don't get the wrong idea. My son's here too," George explained.
They hurried inside, the white walls and bright lights offering a bit of comfort. The hallways were decorated with colorful kids' drawings, but neither of them paid any attention.
They quickly reached the consultation room. Pushing the door open, they saw Lucas, Seraphine, and another boy they didn't recognize.
Lucas had a band-aid on his face, his pants were ripped at the knees, and his clothes were a mess.
Seraphine was sitting off to the side, her eyes red and tears clinging to the corners.
She gently touched her knee, where a shallow cut was bandaged, the bright red blood standing out against the white. It made Emma's heart ache.
"Seraphine, are you okay?" Emma rushed over, her heart in her throat.
Her eyes scanned the kids, trying to figure out what had happened.
Seraphine threw herself into Emma's arms, tears streaming down her face.
Lucas looked at Seraphine with envy. When he glanced at George, he lowered his head, feeling hurt. He wished he had a mom like Emma.
"What happened?" George's voice had a sharp edge, aimed at both Lucas and his teacher.
The teacher stepped forward to explain.
Seraphine's preschool and Lucas's elementary school were part of the same system, so they shared a campus.
While Seraphine was playing with big building blocks on the playground, Lucas's class was having PE. After their lesson, they had some free time.
First graders loved building blocks too. One of Lucas's classmates tried to take Seraphine's blocks, but she wouldn't let him.
When the classmate pushed Seraphine down, Lucas jumped in to defend her, leading to a scuffle. Both boys ended up with minor injuries, and Seraphine hurt her knee when she was pushed.
George couldn't help but look at Seraphine, still in Emma's arms. George was sure of one thing: Isabella was Emma. She just didn't want to spill the beans, so he decided to keep quiet about it.
According to the timeline, Seraphine was conceived the year Emma supposedly died.
The thought made George's blood boil that some guy let a dying woman get pregnant. His anger wasn't aimed at Emma but at some unknown jerk who was lucky enough to have Emma as a wife and Seraphine as a daughter.
From the moment he laid eyes on Seraphine, George was fond of the little girl.
She had the most delicate features, her eyes like two bright stars, full of innocence and curiosity. Her long eyelashes fluttered, adding a playful sparkle to her gaze.
But right now, she looked pretty pitiful.
George felt an urge to scoop her up and comfort her. But before he could move, Lucas beat him to it.
"Don't worry, Seraphine, I'll protect you," Lucas said, his voice soft but strong, offering her a warm sense of security. Even though he was hurt, his focus was all on Seraphine.
"It's okay," Seraphine replied softly, a small smile forming on her lips, though her eyes were still teary.
"Lucas is really a hero, protecting the girls," the teacher said, looking at Lucas and Seraphine with a proud smile. Then she turned to George and Emma. "Sorry, I didn't realize you were a couple."
Emma felt her face heat up with embarrassment. She quickly clarified, "We're not married; we just ran into each other outside the hospital."
The teacher blushed even more, looking more awkward than Emma. She covered her face, avoiding eye contact.
George's and Emma's chemistry was undeniable, and they seemed so familiar with each other. Plus, Lucas and Seraphine looked so much alike, with features that resembled both George and Emma.
George just stood there, a faint smile on his face, seemingly amused by the misunderstanding.
"It's all good. Seraphine and Lucas are like siblings."
Just then, another parent rushed in, looking worried. He had already heard the teacher's explanation and immediately apologized to Lucas and Seraphine.
"I'm really sorry," he said, his tone full of regret, clearly upset with his kid's behavior. "Alvin, apologize!"
"Sorry, Seraphine, I shouldn't have taken your toy," Alvin said, bowing dramatically.
"Sorry, I shouldn't have hit you," Lucas also apologized.
The little conflict between the kids was resolved. But just as they were about to leave, Alvin suddenly blocked Lucas's path.
"Lucas! Even though I apologized, I still don't accept it! Let's fight again, and whoever wins gets to be Seraphine's brother!"
Alvin's dad immediately looked mortified, covering Alvin's mouth and dragging him away without another word.
He couldn't handle the embarrassment!
