Chapter 402 Rescue
Emma's eyes locked onto Charles lying on the bed, his face a sickly purple, a deep bruise around his neck, and his breathing so faint it was almost imperceptible.
Her heart sank, gripped by sudden, fierce panic. She rushed to the bedside, reaching out to check Charles's breath, her voice trembling, "Grandpa! Grandpa! Wake up!"
George followed closely behind, his face turning pale at the sight. He quickly pulled out his phone and dialed 911.
After hanging up, he squatted down to examine Charles more closely. He found that although Charles's heartbeat was weak, it was still there, and he breathed a small sigh of relief.
Emma's eyes were red, but she fought back her tears and quickly helped George lift Charles up.
The two of them carefully supported Charles, moving swiftly out of the room and down the stairs. The mansion was eerily silent, with only their footsteps echoing through the empty hallways.
The ambulance arrived quickly, and the paramedics hurriedly placed Charles on a stretcher and loaded him into the vehicle.
Emma and George followed closely, climbing into the ambulance. Inside, Emma held Charles's hand tightly, whispering, "Grandpa, you have to hold on. We're almost at the hospital."
The ambulance sped through the streets, arriving at the hospital in no time.
Charles was rushed into the emergency room, while they were left waiting outside. They stood in the hallway, heavy-hearted and silent. George stared at the emergency room door, cold fury flooding his mind as he grappled with the question, 'Who would dare try to kill my grandpa?
Meanwhile, reporters had caught wind of the incident and quickly gathered at the hospital entrance, creating a chaotic scene.
Flashbulbs went off incessantly as reporters shouted questions, trying to uncover more details. One yelled, "How is Mr. Charles Russell doing? Who tried to kill him?"
Another speculated loudly, "Could it be someone from the Russell family?" The scene grew increasingly chaotic, and security had to work hard to maintain order.
The news of Charles's near-strangulation spread rapidly throughout Lakeside Haven, becoming the day's most explosive story.
Reports flooded the internet, TV, and newspapers, with everyone speculating about who might have tried to kill Charles. Social media buzzed with theories, and conspiracy theories abounded.
Public opinion soon began to turn against Michael, the current head of the Russell Group.
Online rumors swirled, suggesting that Michael had tried to kill Charles to consolidate his power, or that longstanding conflicts between them had led to a premeditated attack.
Michael quickly responded to the accusations. He posted his schedule for the day on social media, showing that he had been working late at the office and hadn't left all day.
He also shared surveillance footage proving he had been at the company the entire time, with no suspicious behavior. His statement was brief and to the point, captioned simply: [The innocent are always clear, and rumors stop with the wise.]
Michael's statement quickly spread online, and many began to believe in his innocence.
One commenter wrote: [Michael was working late. How could he have had time to harm Charles? This is clearly a setup!]
Another commented: [The real culprit must be someone else. Don't be misled.]
Despite Michael's efforts to clear his name, speculation about Charles's attack continued unabated. Lakeside Haven was consumed by frenzied discussion, with everyone eagerly awaiting the police investigation to reveal the truth.
Meanwhile, George and Emma remained in the hospital hallway, anxiously awaiting news of Charles's condition.
Charles, miraculously, had once again escaped death's grasp.
But Phoenix was still dreaming of killing Charles and making love to George.
The next morning.
Phoenix slumped on the couch, her fingers gripping her phone tightly, her eyes fixed on the headline: #Charles Successfully Resuscitated, Vital Signs Stabilizing.
Her eyes turned icy cold, her teeth grinding in frustration. "Still alive? He's really tough!"
Her mind was in turmoil. She had thought everything was under control, but Charles had pulled through. She stood up abruptly, a fierce glint in her eyes, her mind racing. "Since Charles survived, I'll have to find another way to drag Emma into the abyss!"
She quickly walked into her room, opened her makeup kit, and began to disguise herself with practiced skill.
Minutes later, the person in the mirror was no longer Phoenix but Scarlett. She smirked at her reflection, her eyes gleaming with malice. She used Scarlett's identity to accuse the culprit—who wouldn't believe it?
It would surely ruin Emma's reputation.
With everything ready, Phoenix stormed off to the hospital.
The hospital entrance was already packed with reporters and onlookers, flashbulbs flashing incessantly, and the buzz of conversation filling the air.
The crowd surged like a tide, everyone craning their necks to catch a glimpse of the latest news about Charles's attack. The atmosphere was thick with tension and curiosity, as if something explosive was about to break at any moment.
Phoenix pushed through the crowd, heading straight for the hospital lobby, her face set in a mask of righteous indignation. Her appearance immediately drew everyone's attention, and reporters swarmed around her, shoving microphones in her face. "Mrs. Russell, what do you think about Mr. Charles Russell's attempted murder? Who do you think is responsible?"
She stopped, her gaze sweeping coldly over the crowd, then took a deep breath and spoke sharply and clearly, "It was Emma!"
The name exploded like a bomb among the crowd.
Emma? Who was Emma?
Some remembered that Emma was George's wife who had supposedly died three years ago. But how could she be involved in Charles's attack?
"I know what you're all thinking. Three years ago, Emma didn't die. She fled abroad. Now, three years later, she's returned under the alias Isabella to take revenge on the Russell family, and that's why she tried to kill my father-in-law. That's her motive!"
The reporters' eyes widened, their cameras and recording devices working furiously, flashbulbs nearly blinding her.
Someone gasped, "Emma? George's wife?" The crowd buzzed with speculation, voices rising and falling. "Oh my God, Emma tried to kill Mr. Charles Russell?"
"How is that possible? She's part of the Russell family!" someone exclaimed in disbelief.
"I can't believe she's so vicious!" another person said angrily.
The reporters were even more excited, clamoring for more details. "Mrs. Russell, can you elaborate? Do you have any evidence?"
