Chapter 36 Sentenced to Three Years in Prison
Emma rolled back to the villa, planning to grab some clothes and bounce, but when she spotted the baby clothes on the couch, she couldn't help but pick 'em up, feeling all kinds of torn about leaving them behind.
These clothes? All George's doing. So pretty and soft.
If only they were for her kid, that'd be the dream.
But George would never buy clothes for her kid. He'd only do that for Anna's kid.
Emma pressed the baby clothes to her face, like it could somehow make her feel George's touch. She thought she must be losing it.
George was such a jerk to her, but she still couldn't shake this hopeless crush on him.
In the end, Emma couldn't leave the baby clothes behind.
She grabbed her handbag and headed downstairs, only to bump into George and Anna coming in.
George's eyes zeroed in on the handbag and he snapped, "Those are for Anna's kid. Who said you could touch them? Don't you know how filthy you are? How can my kid wear clothes you've touched!"
"Filthy? How am I filthy?" Emma's voice was barely a whisper, full of despair and helplessness, "Just 'cause you think I tricked you into sleeping with me, I'm suddenly trash in your eyes? But do you even know that time was..."
"Emma." Anna cut in, walking over with this fake kind look, "No wonder George is mad; he's a germaphobe. You've been with so many guys and even slept with them for cash. Not just George, even I can't deal with that."
With that one line, Anna nailed Emma to the wall of shame. Gotta admit, Anna was a pro at twisting words around George. Every word was dripping with hidden insults, but George, the idiot, couldn't see it.
George thought of those guys and his face went dark. He took two steps back and pulled Anna away from Emma.
George said, "Don't touch her, she's filthy."
He grabbed Anna's hand and turned away, their backs stabbing into Emma's heart, while Anna didn't forget to throw a smug smile over her shoulder.
The stereotype was set; no matter what Emma said, it wouldn't change George's mind. She didn't wanna waste her breath anymore and decided to move Douglas to another hospital and get on with her life.
Baby clothes still needed to be bought, so Emma walked into a maternity store to pick out some cute stuff for the baby on the way.
As she was carefully picking things off the shelf, she suddenly heard a snide laugh behind her.
"Emma, how can you still be in the mood to shop here with all that serious stuff hanging over you? Haven't the cops found you yet?" Anna's voice was dripping with mockery as she walked up, a smug grin on her face.
"What do you want now?" Emma's heart tightened, trying to stay cool and avoid getting tangled up with her.
"I just wanted to see how a shameless woman like you has the nerve to pick out baby clothes here." Anna's voice was venomous, her eyes gleaming with triumph, "You're such an idiot. Even if you have no talent, why plagiarize others' work? Now VirtualVista Design Studio is suing you for damaging their company's rep and infringing on intellectual property. If you're convicted, you'll go to jail."
"I know that was my original work. You don't need to frame me; this is straight-up slander." Emma's voice was shaky, filled with helplessness and despair, silently praying to get out of there ASAP.
Emma had already taken too many hits; she didn't want to give Anna another shot at screwing her over.
"Think you can just leave? Not a chance!" Anna suddenly grabbed Emma's hand, leaning back like she was setting a trap.
"Let go of me!" Emma struggled, trying to break free, but Anna's grip was surprisingly strong.
Then, out of nowhere, Anna let go and fell backward, hitting the ground hard. Blood started pooling around her.
Emma stared in horror, anxiety gripping her, "What the hell happened?"
"You pushed me!" Anna clutched her belly, her voice filled with pain and anger.
"I didn't push you!" Emma's voice was panicked, silently praying for someone to help.
Just then, George walked by, saw the scene, and his face turned dark. He rushed over, his eyes full of accusation.
George said, "It's you again! Emma!"
"I didn't!" Emma's voice was filled with helplessness, her heart sinking, "I didn't even touch her!"
"What are you still trying to deny?" George's voice was like a cold blade, cutting through her, as if sealing her fate. The people around them started pointing fingers at Emma.
Soon after, the cops showed up, and Emma was filled with despair. She struggled, trying to explain, but everyone believed Anna's story and didn't want to hear her side.
The police, seeing that Emma refused to confess, forcibly handcuffed her and took her to the police car.
Emma ended up in the detention center, and two days later, she finally saw George.
George's hostility was even stronger than before.
"Emma, is it really so hard to just live a normal life? Why are you so hell-bent on causing trouble?"
"Anna's baby is gone, are you happy now?"
Anna really had a miscarriage?
Emma instinctively protected her own belly, a growing sense of dread.
"Not only did you hurt Anna, but you also dared to plagiarize others' work to scam money. Emma, don't even think about seeing the light of day again. I'll make your life a living hell!"
The hatred in George's eyes was like a knife, cutting deep into Emma's heart, tearing apart any warmth and softness that once existed. It grew silently in her heart, like a poisonous vine, wrapping around every inch of her skin, gradually eroding her sanity and emotions.
"Why is Anna's baby so important to you, but you don't give a damn about mine?" Emma screamed.
"Go to hell!" George's hatred had him completely chained up.
No matter how cold the floor was, it couldn't compare to the heart-wrenching pain of George's words. She couldn't forget those past promises, couldn't let go of those lies, and hatred surged like a tidal wave, drowning her sanity.
This time, Emma in the detention center wasn't as lucky as before.
She was convicted.
For plagiarism, infringement, and intentionally causing bodily harm that led to a miscarriage. Emma faced multiple charges. Without a lawyer to defend her, she was sentenced to three years in prison.
After her appeal was rejected, Emma had to face this unwarranted disaster.
Three years.
Emma smiled bitterly.
Could she survive until her release?
