Chapter 74 Sunflower

The winter greenhouse was warm. Emma finally picked out a bunch of sunflowers.

These flowers were Douglas's jam, all about sunshine and hope. She wanted to share that vibe with Sophia, hoping that even with her sickness, she could still catch some of life's beauty.

Emma pushed open the hospital room door and slipped in quietly.

The room was chill and cozy, with white walls and fancy sheets giving off a peaceful vibe. She plopped the sunflowers into a vase on the windowsill. The sunflowers looked super bright in the mix of light and shadow, like they were beaming life into the whole room.

As she was fixing the flowers, Sophia slowly opened her eyes. Her gaze was kinda fuzzy, like she wasn't fully awake. Spotting the sunflowers on the windowsill, her expression shifted, diving into deep memories.

Every time she saw sunflowers, her dad's fave, a wave of warmth and sadness hit her heart.

"Dad..." she whispered, tears glistening in her eyes, filled with longing and worry for her father. She hadn't seen him in years; was he okay? Her heart was a mess of yearning for her dad and feeling helpless about the past.

Then, her gaze landed on Emma, and a wave of disgust surged in her heart.

"Emma, what are you doing here? Isn't messing with Anna and Lucas enough? Now you're here to bug me too?"

"No, I just wanted to check on you."

"To see if I'm dead or not?"

Emma felt like she stopped breathing for a sec. She looked at Sophia's tired face and then at her hand, bruised from all the injections. Feeling sad, her eyes got misty.

"I just hope you can see the real me, not the version of me everyone talks about," Emma carefully chose her words. She wouldn't badmouth Anna in front of Sophia, but she also hoped not to be wrapped in prejudice.

She so desperately hoped that Sophia could smile at her. Emma's sincerity seemed to move Sophia, who looked at the sunflowers on the windowsill.

"Did you buy these?" Sophia's voice had a mix of emotions.

At first, she admired Emma's talent and felt close to her right away. But after learning about what Emma had done, especially after she stole Anna's boyfriend, she couldn't stand Emma anymore.

Then, Emma got caught up in a plagiarism scandal, which was a big no-no in the design world. Sophia couldn't tolerate Emma anymore. She had worked hard to get Emma locked up.

But today, she felt warmth and joy. This sense of closeness was something she didn't even feel with Anna. What was happening to her?

Sophia's gaze made Emma a bit nervous. She nodded slightly and responded. She could only silently hope that Sophia would accept this gesture.

Just as things were starting to chill between them, Anna walked in. She was carrying a small bag, looking like she was there to visit Sophia.

"Mom, how you feeling?" Anna's voice was soft and sweet, her eyes darting around the room. When she spotted the sunflowers, a flicker of surprise crossed her face.

"Sunflowers?" Her brows knitted together, clearly annoyed by the flowers' sudden appearance. She vividly remembered seeing a sunflower on Douglas's windowsill the day she went to kill him.

Could Emma know something? She glanced at Emma in the corner, who was now standing close to Sophia. The two of them together really did look like mother and daughter.

No way! She couldn't let Emma take her place! When she found out that Emma was Sophia's real daughter, she secretly did a paternity test.

Sure enough, Emma was indeed Sophia's biological daughter. But Anna would never allow that. She took the DNA report to Sophia and revealed her own identity.

As for why Anna grew up with the Jones family, she just said the hospital had mixed up the babies.

Back then, the hospital didn't have cameras everywhere, and most records were handwritten and lost.

Reopening the case would lead nowhere.

As long as she, Olivia, and Jerry didn't mess up, the truth wouldn't come out. But Anna didn't expect there to be a loophole.

How did Emma find her way here? Didn't she know how much Sophia hated her?

Despite Anna's constant badmouthing Emma, Sophia still managed to get along with Emma.

Even if there was a natural mother-daughter bond, Anna would sever that relationship! Thinking of this, Anna immediately took a step back in panic, looking at Emma in horror.

"Emma, how can you be so cruel! If you want revenge, come at me. Don't drag my mom into this!" Anna suddenly changed her expression, leaving Sophia a bit confused. Out of maternal instinct, she instinctively opened her arms to protect Anna, pushing Emma away.

"Anna, what did she try to do to you?" Sophia asked nervously.

"Emma asked me a few days ago if you were allergic to pollen. I had no idea of her intention, so I said yes. I didn't expect her to bring flowers to see you today! Mom, I'm sorry, I was careless and put you in danger again." Anna tightly held Sophia's hand, resting her head on her arm, "Mom, I saved you with my own blood, so I can't let anything happen to you."

"Don't worry, I'm not allergic to pollen. It's right to be wary of someone like her! Anna, you must take care of yourself."

"Okay, I understand, Mom."

Emma was once again floored by Anna's ability to spin lies. In front of George, she was gentle and considerate; in front of Sophia, she was sweet and caring.

Even though it was Emma's blood that saved Sophia, Anna took the credit. She was truly good at pretending.

Emma didn't want to explain anymore. With Anna's talent for lying, no one would believe her.

Before Emma left, she politely said goodbye to Sophia.

"Ms. Brown, seeing you recover well puts my mind at ease. I'll visit you another day!"

"Emma, stop pretending to be a good person here. My health has nothing to do with you! I don't need your concern!" Sophia's gaze at Emma returned to one of disgust, just like before.
