Chapter 334 I Want You Dead

Just then, Emma caught a glimpse of Phoenix emerging from the corner, holding a scalpel that glinted ominously in the dim light, as she smirked coldly. She had clearly been waiting for the right moment to strike, aiming to deliver a fatal blow to Emma.

"Emma, you really are hard to kill," Phoenix sneered, the scalpel gleaming under the faint light. "But your luck ends here."

Emma's heart sank. She knew the situation was dire. The man, though injured, still had fight left in him, and Phoenix's appearance had pushed her into a corner.

"What do you want, Phoenix?" Emma demanded sharply.

"I want you dead!" Phoenix lunged at Emma, the scalpel aimed straight at her chest.

Emma quickly sidestepped, but the man's fist was already swinging towards her head. She barely managed to raise her arm to block it, but the force of the blow sent her stumbling back, crashing into the wall.

"Did you really think you could escape?" the man taunted, a cruel glint in his eyes.

Emma gritted her teeth, forcing herself to stay calm. Her only hope now was to use her pepper spray to fight back. She quickly adjusted her stance, gripping the pepper spray tightly.

In a swift motion, Emma thrust the pepper spray towards the man's face.

The man recoiled, his body convulsing as he fell to the ground with a heavy thud, the acrid smell filling the air.

But just as Emma breathed a sigh of relief, Phoenix's scalpel was already at her throat. Emma raised her arm to block the attack, but the scalpel still sliced through her arm, blood instantly gushing out.

Emma cried out in pain but had no time to tend to the wound. She quickly brought her knee up, slamming it into Phoenix's belly.

Phoenix grunted, dropping the scalpel. Emma seized the opportunity, picking up the scalpel and pointing it at Phoenix.

"Hands up," Emma said coldly.

Phoenix sneered, slowly raising her hands, a hint of madness in her eyes. "You think I don't have a backup plan?"

Ignoring her threat, Emma stepped back, keeping her eyes fixed on Phoenix.

Suddenly, Phoenix turned and bolted for the door. Emma chased after her, but Phoenix had already vanished into the pouring rain.

Previously, Emma could muster enough strength to fight against Phoenix, and the effects of the ether started to take over. Her vision blurred, and her limbs felt like lead. She knew she couldn't hold on much longer but had to get out of there. She staggered towards the door, each step feeling like she was walking on clouds.

Just as she reached for the doorknob, her legs gave out, and she collapsed to the floor. Her vision darkened, and she could hear the man's pained groans, but she was slipping into unconsciousness.

"George," she whispered before everything went black.

Emma didn't know how much time had passed when she finally regained consciousness. Her head throbbed, and her limbs ached as if they had been crushed. She slowly opened her eyes, finding herself lying on the floor in the dim light.

"I'm still alive," she croaked, her voice hoarse and weak.

She struggled to sit up, looking around. The man was left, leaving behind a pool of blood and shards of broken glass. Her pepper spray lay nearby, covered in blood.

"Lucas," she suddenly remembered, standing up too quickly and nearly falling again as dizziness overwhelmed her. She steadied herself against the wall, forcing herself to stay calm.

With trembling hands, she pulled out her phone. The time on the screen made her heart race—it was past school dismissal time. Panic surged through her as Phoenix's cold face flashed in her mind.

No, she had to get to the school immediately!

Ignoring the pain, Emma hurried to the door.

When she arrived at the school, the campus was empty, with only a few streetlights casting weak glows in the darkness. She rushed to the building and found Lucas's teacher.

"Ms. Parker, is Lucas still here?"

She looked up, surprised by Emma's pale face and disheveled hair. "Lucas was picked up by his grandmother about an hour ago."

"His grandmother?" Emma was taken aback, feeling a slight relief but also confusion. Sophia hadn't mentioned picking up Lucas today.

"Yes, Lucas's grandmother signed him out," she said, handing Emma a form from her drawer.

Emma took the form, recognizing the familiar signature. She felt a weight lift off her shoulders. Forcing a smile, she said, 'Thank you, Ms. Parker.' Then she stepped outside.

Emma dialed Sophia's number. "Mrs. Stuart, is Lucas with you?"

Sophia's initial joy at hearing from Emma quickly turned to concern.

Why did Emma still call her Mrs. Stuart?

She was Emma's biological mother, after all.

It was clear that Emma hadn't forgiven her for past mistakes.

But Sophia wouldn't give up. No matter how much effort it took, she wanted Emma to acknowledge and accept her. If, after all her efforts, Emma still felt the same, Sophia would respect her choice.

Lost in thought, Sophia didn't respond immediately, making Emma more anxious.

"Answer me! Is Lucas with you?"

Sophia finally processed Emma's words, confusion in her voice. "Lucas? No, I didn't pick him up today. You said you'd keep him with you from now on."

Emma's heart sank, her grip on the phone tightening until her knuckles turned white. "But his teacher said you picked him up and signed him out."

"I didn't!" Sophia's voice grew urgent. "Emma, what's going on? Where's Lucas?"

Emma's mind raced, but she forced herself to stay calm. "Don't worry, I'll go back to the school and ask again."

After hanging up, Emma's thoughts turned to Phoenix's cold face. Her fingers trembled, a sense of dread washing over her.

"Phoenix, was it you?" she whispered, a chill in her eyes.

Emma had made the call in the school hallway. After hanging up, she returned to the office and directly asked Ms. Parker, "Ms. Parker, are you sure it was Lucas's grandmother who picked him up?"
