Chapter 76 Kidnapping
Late at night, the hospital corridor was dead quiet, just the occasional footsteps and distant beeps from machines. Emma, all jittery, quietly nudged open the door to Sophia's room. Her heart was pounding like crazy. She had to take this risk to get to the bottom of things.
Inside, the dim light cast a soft glow on the bed where Sophia lay, looking all peaceful and serene. Emma's eyes roamed over her, filled with a mix of emotions. She tiptoed to the bedside, mentally reminding herself not to wake her up.
Her fingers lightly brushed the pillow until she found a fine strand of hair, which she carefully pinched between her fingers. A wave of joy surged through her.
But she had no clue the whole thing was being recorded by a hidden camera, watching her every move.
Emma carefully placed the hair into a small bag she had with her. She knew the next step was to get a DNA test to uncover the truth she was dying to know.
Three days later, Emma finally got a notification from the testing center. She was about to uncover a huge secret, her heart racing with anticipation and nerves.
Just as Emma was about to reach the center, an old man named Barry Myers with white hair suddenly appeared in front of her, looking like he was searching for something.
"Ma'am, I'm starving. Can you buy me something to eat?" Barry's voice was low and raspy, his eyes showing a hint of helplessness.
Emma stopped in her tracks, feeling a pang of compassion. She looked at Barry's wrinkled hands and felt a surge of pity. She opened her handbag, took out $50, and stuffed it into Barry's hand.
"I've got something urgent to do right now. Please, get yourself something to eat."
"Please, I'm really hungry. Just take me to get a sandwich, okay?" Barry said slowly, his eyes shining with hope.
Emma hesitated for a moment but ultimately decided to help him. She nodded and smiled, saying, "Okay, I'll take you to get a sandwich."
"Alright, let's go to the best restaurant," Barry decided immediately.
The two walked slowly along the path. Emma felt relieved that she could still do a good deed instead of wasting her whole life.
However, as they walked further, the surroundings became more desolate. The air filled with a chilling atmosphere.
"This road seems a bit off," Emma began to feel uneasy, her steps slowing down. "Where exactly do you want to eat?"
"We're almost there," Barry smiled slightly, seemingly unaware of Emma's tension.
However, Emma grew increasingly anxious. She looked around and noticed the number of pedestrians was dwindling, leaving the street eerily quiet. She instinctively felt that this was not a safe place.
Emma's heart raced, her mind flooded with thoughts of finding an excuse to leave.
"I have something to do," her voice trembled slightly, trying to hide her inner panic, "I must go."
But just as she turned, Barry suddenly grabbed her wrist with a grip that sent a jolt of pain through her arm. Emma's heart filled with fear as she struggled desperately, only to realize she couldn't break free.
"You ain't going nowhere," Barry said in a low, menacing voice.
"Let go of me!" She fought with all her might, but it was useless. This wasn't the strength of an old man. At that moment, Emma knew she had been set up.
"Grab her!" A deep voice suddenly commanded. Before Emma could react, several people grabbed her from behind and dragged her into a car parked by the roadside.
"Let go of me! Who are you?" Emma's heart was filled with despair. Was she dealing with human traffickers?
The car door slammed shut. The interior was cramped and dark, filled with a nasty smell. Emma's mind raced, trying to figure out a way to escape.
"Don't struggle," a rough voice whispered in her ear, carrying a hint of threat and coldness.
Emma realized she was trapped. At that moment, Billy Porter reached into her pocket and found it empty, then snatched her handbag and took her documents.
Billy stopped the car and handed the documents to another woman, Isolde Porter, who had a smug look on her face.
"Be quick!"
"Got it!"
Emma couldn't see where they had stopped through the tinted black car window. Her phone was confiscated, leaving her with no way to call for help. She could only wait in silence.
After about ten minutes, Isolde returned with a piece of paper, the DNA test report.
Isolde glanced at the report, then looked at Emma with sympathy, sighing, "Poor thing, but you shouldn't have messed with the wrong people."
"Isolde!" Billy immediately interrupted, "We're just doing our job. Keep your mouth shut."
Isolde made a silencing gesture. The car drove smoothly, and no one spoke along the way.
Emma's anxiety eased slightly. At least she could ensure they weren't human traffickers. She was still worried, though, wondering what kind of torture awaited her when she saw Anna.
The road changed from smooth to bumpy over the next half hour. Emma knew it was time to stop. Sure enough, the car soon stopped in a desolate area.
Anna, with her perfect makeup and elegant attire, was already waiting there, her face beaming with a bright smile.
"Emma, didn't expect to fall into my hands again, did you?"
Anna extended her hand, and Billy promptly handed over the test report. Anna didn't reveal the result, instead lightly patting Emma's still-healing right cheek.
She didn't use force to avoid getting blood on her hands.
Emma glared at Anna with pure hatred. At this point, their enmity was beyond resolution. She wanted to see what else Anna could do to her.
"Emma, don't hate me. I didn't want to do this. Without George, how could I find these people to kidnap you? So, all of this is because of George. He's the one who wants you to suffer."
The real culprit behind everything was George!
