Chapter 14 Changing Outfits

Mrs. Brooks, totally losing it, called the cops and plopped down on the couch, fuming while waiting for them to show up. The party guests around her were all whispering, making the whole scene even more awkward.

Just then, the click-clack of high heels echoed from the doorway, and in walked this super classy lady, dressed to the nines and oozing elegance. It was George's mom, Scarlett Lewis.

"Mrs. Brooks, chill out a bit," Scarlett said, her voice calm but with a touch of authority. "Maybe we don't need to get the police involved. It's my birthday today. Can we just let this slide for now?"

"Mrs. Russell, don't you think a thief should be punished?" Mrs. Brooks shot back, still fuming. "That bracelet I lost is worth a fortune!"

"Take a deep breath," Scarlett said, her voice steady. She leaned in and whispered something in Mrs. Brooks' ear. Mrs. Brooks' face changed a bit, and she shot a look at Emma before saying it was all just a misunderstanding.

Mrs. Brooks stormed off, still mad but less dramatic. Scarlett kept her cool and didn't make a scene with Emma, but she gave her a look that said a lot.

Everyone was dying to know what Scarlett had whispered and turned their eyes to Emma, barely hiding their smirks.

Emma felt like she was suffocating, her teeth clenched in humiliation. She couldn't stand being there any longer and bolted to her room, needing to regroup.

Once in her room, Emma quickly changed into a fancy dress, added some simple jewelry, and did her makeup, trying to look elegant and charming. But inside, she was still a mess.

"Finally decided to look presentable, huh?" Anna suddenly appeared at the door, a mocking smile on her face. "Who knew you could actually look like a high-society lady."

Emma looked up, defiance in her eyes. "I don't need your approval."

"Too bad it won't change your status," Anna sneered. "Today, you're just a joke to everyone."

"Say what you want," Emma snapped. "I won't let you have the last laugh. Right now, I'm the real Mrs. Russell, not you!"

Anna was livid.

Sure, Scarlett treated her well and George was sweet, but she had no official status—just a mistress.

"You!" Anna was furious. "Emma, don't get cocky. George will divorce you soon! And that kid you're carrying, George will make sure you both disappear!"

"At least I'm carrying George's baby. Just wait and see!" Emma shot back, disgusted.

Just as Anna stormed off, George walked in.

He was taken aback by Emma's appearance but quickly remembered the drama from the hall, and his face darkened.

"Today is my mom's birthday. You showed up late, dressed like a maid, and then you go and steal something? Are you trying to cause trouble?"

Emma's lips twisted bitterly. Last night, she'd ended up in the hospital because of his rough treatment, almost losing the baby.

She'd rushed here from the hospital without even processing the news about the tumor in her body, only to walk into this mess. She hadn't had a chance to get ready.

Emma looked up at George's cold, handsome face. "George, I didn't steal anything. It was Anna, she..."

"You got caught with the necklace in your pocket and still want to blame Anna? Emma, aren't you disgusting?"

Disgusting. This whole relationship had become pretty disgusting. Emma's stomach churned, but she forced it down, pretending nothing had happened.

George wrapped his arm around Emma's waist, but there was no affection in his touch.
