Chapter 362 Heartache

Ever since that day when Emma saw Charles alone in that room at the end of the hallway, she couldn't get him out of her mind. She didn't know why, but every time she thought of his frail figure, it made her heart ache.

The next day, Emma went back to Charles' room, this time bringing some fruit and nutritional supplements. She gently placed them on the bedside table. The caregiver, Anouk, noticed her and immediately put on a warm smile. "You're back again! You're such a kind soul. Don't worry, we'll take good care of him."

Emma nodded, not saying much. She sat by Charles' bed, looking at his pale face, feeling a pang of sadness. She softly asked Anouk, "Doesn't he have any family visiting him?"

Anouk's smile turned dismissive. "This old man's had a rough life. His family's too busy to visit."

Hearing this, Emma felt even worse. She looked at Charles for a while, then sighed softly and took out a stack of money from her bag, handing it to Anouk. "Please, use this to get him some good food and take extra care of him."

Anouk's eyes lit up, and she nodded eagerly. "You're so generous. Don't worry, with your help, I'll make sure he gets the best care!"

Emma smiled slightly and left the room. However, she didn't know that as soon as she was out of sight, Anouk's smile vanished. She stuffed the money into her pocket, muttering under her breath, "Nosy woman, who does she think she is?"

George was very busy, but he made time every day to visit Charles in the hospital. After all, besides him, no one else remembered Charles anymore.

He stood at the end of the hallway, looking through the glass window as Anouk changed Charles' medication. Her movements were rough, even pulling out Charles' feeding tube, and she muttered impatiently, "Such a troublesome person, a waste of resources."

George's brow furrowed instantly, his dissatisfaction with the caregiver's conduct distinctly reflected in his tense expression.

He was about to enter the room when he heard another nurse approaching, and the two started talking in low voices.

"That woman came again? And gave you money?" the other caregiver asked.

"Yeah, what a fool, coming here every day to see this old man. I don't know where she gets all this sympathy, meddling so much," Anouk sneered. "But when she's here, I just act nice. She can't tell the difference anyway."

George's face darkened upon hearing that, but his expression softened slightly with a hint of surprise. He hadn't anticipated that Emma would come to see Charles.

George didn't go in immediately but turned and left the room. He went to find the attending doctor, paid the fees, and arranged for the best caregiver to take care of Charles. Of course, it was expensive. If it were up to Scarlett now, she wouldn't spend the money, so George had to handle it himself.

Even while arranging for Charles' care, George's mind was filled with thoughts of Emma. The day he left the hospital, he had signed the divorce papers, but Emma hadn't contacted him to finalize the divorce. Could Emma have changed her mind? Did she not want to divorce him anymore?

No matter what, he had to see her again. Last time, he had secretly watched her from outside her room, but she was asleep then. He didn't know how she was recovering. Today, he had to check on her.

Even if Emma kept pushing him away, even if she hated him, George had to see her and make sure she was okay.

He needed to say goodbye in person.

Thinking about this, George felt a wave of bitterness wash over him. He couldn't help but start looking for Emma, wanting to understand her true feelings.

When he reached the hospital garden, he saw Emma and Michael standing together from a distance. They seemed to be talking, with a faint smile on Emma's face, while Michael stood close, looking at her with gentle, focused eyes.

George's heart sank.

He stood not far away, his eyes fixed on them. Soon, he saw Michael reach out to adjust Emma's coat on her shoulder, a natural and intimate gesture. Emma didn't pull away; instead, she lowered her head slightly, looking a bit shy.

George's heart ached deeply as he witnessed the scene. His fists clenched tighter, his nails almost digging into his palms. He had thought Emma still had feelings for him, that she hadn't finalized the divorce because she couldn't let go. But now, it seemed her heart had already turned to Michael.

George turned and left, his heart feeling torn apart, a mix of bitterness and pain making it hard to breathe.

At that moment, Emma suddenly felt a sharp pain in her chest, her face turning pale.

Michael immediately noticed her discomfort and frowned, asking, "What's wrong? Are you feeling okay?"

Emma shook her head, "I don't know, I just suddenly feel a tightness and pain in my chest."

Michael quickly supported her, saying softly, "Let's go see the doctor."

Soon, the doctor examined Emma and concluded, "It's a post-accident symptom. Her body is recovering, but emotional fluctuations can trigger some heart reactions. It's best to keep her mood stable and avoid overexertion."

Michael nodded, but he had a nagging feeling that it wasn't that simple. He looked at Emma's pale face, his worry deepening.

Emma, on the other hand, looked down at her hands, feeling a wave of sadness. She didn't know why she suddenly felt heartache, but it felt like she had lost something important.

After leaving the hospital, George stood by his car for a long time, unable to get in. His mind kept replaying the scene of Emma and Michael together, the pain in his chest like a tidal wave, overwhelming him.

"Emma," he whispered, his voice full of bitterness, "do you really not need me anymore?"

In the hospital room, Emma sat by the window, her gaze on the sky outside, feeling an indescribable emptiness. She didn't know what she was waiting for or where this vague sense of longing came from.

After three days of rest, Emma was discharged from the hospital.

As the sunlight poured over the hospital entrance, she felt a sense of confusion. Since waking up, it seemed like a part of her memory was missing. She could see the people around her and didn't resist them, but she couldn't fully connect with the relationships that were supposed to be hers.

Seraphine excitedly grabbed her hand, speaking in a sweet, soft voice, "Mommy, are we going to Grandma and Grandpa's house?"

Emma looked down at Seraphine's sweet smile, feeling a bit of warmth in her heart. Seraphine's reliance on Sophia and Henry, along with their careful and attentive care, made Emma feel that staying at their house wouldn't be so bad. So she nodded, "Okay, we'll go home."

Michael smiled slightly, as if relieved, and said, "So, my sweetheart, can you also take in this homeless wanderer?"
