Chapter 296 Have a Little Brother
"Isabella, you're such an awesome mom," Sophia said genuinely.
Even though Isabella had a complicated past with Anna, Isabella had put all that aside and treated Lucas like her own. It was clear that Isabella was a kind-hearted person.
Sophia regretted her past actions. Why had she ever lashed out at such a kind person? She even wondered if Anna had somehow tricked her into believing all those lies.
"Lucas is my little treasure. I just want him to be happy and healthy," Emma replied with a warm smile.
She understood the subtext in Sophia's words and knew that one of the reasons Sophia had agreed to come over for dinner was to check on Lucas. Even Emma herself couldn't quite understand why she didn't resent Lucas; instead, she felt a natural affection for him.
Maybe it was because Lucas was the same age as the child she had lost, and she transferred her love to him.
In any case, if this dinner could reassure Sophia enough to leave Lucas in her care, it had served its purpose.
Dinner was a relaxed and joyful affair, with the three of them enjoying each other's company. Lucas ate heartily, occasionally letting out satisfied sighs, while Emma and Sophia laughed and cherished the warm moment.
'I wish times like these could last forever,' Sophia thought, feeling a long-lost sense of warmth and happiness.
After seeing Sophia off, Emma turned to put Lucas to bed, only to find that he had already cleaned up and gone to his room.
Emma picked up a book and went to find Lucas. "Do you want to continue with the Andersen's Fairy Tales tonight?"
"No need!" Lucas said firmly. "I'm a big kid now. I can sleep on my own. I want you to spend time with Dad so you can give me a little brother!"
Emma was taken aback by Lucas's suggestion, a slight smile of embarrassment appearing on her face.
She said, "You little rascal."
"But I think it's a great idea!" Lucas pouted, speaking earnestly. "I want Mom and Dad to always be together and happy like today."
Emma felt a bit helpless but was touched by Lucas's innocence. He just wanted a complete family.
"Alright, Lucas, you're a big boy now. You can sleep on your own tonight," Emma said gently, turning on the small nightlight on the bedside table. "If you get scared, you can come to my room."
"I'm not scared."
At that moment, George walked in, hearing Lucas's words and smiling. "Lucas is right. Isabella and I should spend more time together."
George bent down and hugged Emma affectionately. Seeing this, Lucas smiled happily, filled with hope for a beautiful family.
"Your mom and I will always be together," George said, looking at Emma with gentle eyes.
"That's great! We always together," Lucas said, tilting his head in thought. "Oh, and a little brother too."
"You little rascal!" Emma said, gently ruffling Lucas's hair. "Go to sleep now, or you won't grow tall."
Satisfied with the promise that his parents would always be together, Lucas reluctantly went to bed. "I'll go to sleep now; but when I wake up, you two better still be together!"
Watching Lucas happily run back to his room, Emma and George exchanged a smile.
George understood how precious this warmth was. Even if Emma was deceiving him, at least for this moment, she was smiling, and the fact that she was willing to put in the effort to deceive him meant she cared. That was enough for him.
As night fell, George held Emma, feeling her warmth, and gradually fell asleep. Emma pretended to be asleep, but her mind was in turmoil.
When George's breathing became steady, Emma quietly opened her eyes, gazing at his peaceful face.
Moonlight streamed through the curtains, highlighting his chiseled features. She couldn't help but think how charming George was, but his past actions had truly hurt her.
No matter George's reasons, the pain Emma had endured could never be undone.
As she recalled the past, a wave of hatred surged within her.
She inhaled the familiar scent in the air, a sleep fragrance she had specially created for George back when they were in Sunterra.
At that time, almost every renowned doctor had tried to cure George's insomnia to no avail, until Scarlett bought a fragrance from her that finally helped him sleep.
Only with her fragrance could George sleep.
But now, seeing George sleep so soundly, Emma seriously doubted whether even an earthquake could wake him. She even began to wonder if his insomnia was fake.
Or had George's insomnia been a ploy for sympathy, making her wonder if he truly needed those fragrances.
As her thoughts deepened, a dark idea began to form in Emma's mind.
If she added a harmful substance to the fragrance, slowly damaging George's body, perhaps she could control him.
This thought excited her.
She knew it was wrong, but her resentment were overwhelming. She decided to try it and see what would happen.
Emma quietly walked to the table and opened the fragrance jar.
Carefully, she added the prepared, purified essence, a slow-acting poison that would gradually weaken the immune system, causing long-term health issues.
Once done, she put the jar back in place and returned to bed, falling asleep again.
The next morning.
Sunlight streamed into Scarlett's bedroom. As she woke up, she habitually checked her phone, only to find that Phoenix hadn't returned all night. Anxiety began to set in.
"Where could Phoenix be?" Scarlett muttered to herself, feeling uneasy. She called Phoenix's phone, but there was no answer.
"I need to report this. I can't let anything happen to her."
Children from wealthy families were at high risk. If someone knew her identity, kidnapping was a real threat, and if the ransom wasn't paid promptly, it could even lead to murder. Scarlett's biggest fear was that Phoenix had been kidnapped.
Scarlett hurried to the police station, explained the situation, and the police, recognizing Phoenix's name, checked their records. They discovered that Phoenix had been detained at the station.
