Chapter 284 Deception
When Emma got back to The Russell Villa, it was already late.
Moonlight streamed through the curtains, casting a soft glow on the floor. Emma quietly tiptoed inside.
The smell of smoke hit her immediately. The whole first floor was filled with a thick haze. Emma frowned and slowly made her way to the living room, her eyes landing on the couch. George was sitting there, a lit cigarette in his hand, smoke swirling around him like a barrier.
"George," Emma called softly.
George slowly lifted his head, his gaze lingering on Emma for a long moment. The smoke highlighted his handsome yet slightly worn-out face.
"You're back," he said in a low, raspy voice, tinged with exhaustion, as if he had been waiting for a long time.
"Yeah, I'm back. You wouldn't believe how busy the store was today," Emma said with a smile, as if she had come straight home from work and not from Michael's house.
"Just got off work?" A complex emotion flashed in George's eyes. "Really?"
"Of course. Why would I lie to you? Every day I have to work at the store and do designs. It's really exhausting!" Emma kicked off her high heels and sank into the soft couch.
She wrapped around George's lean waist, her fingers playfully pressing against his defined abs.
If George hadn't seen Emma and Michael's intimate moment with his own eyes, he might have been fooled by Emma's act. Her doe-like eyes were full of affection, just like the former Emma.
But there was a difference.
The former Emma's gaze was restrained, always carefully hiding her feelings; but now, Isabella's eyes were bold, seemingly passionate but actually cold as ice.
Her love for him was all an act.
"Isabella, can you stop seeing Michael?" George hugged Emma tightly in return.
Emma's heart skipped a beat. Why did George suddenly bring up Michael? Did he know about her secret meetings with Michael to bring down the Russell Group? How did George know?
She would have to be more careful in the future.
"Of course. I'm married to you now, so I won't be seeing Michael anymore. From now on, he's just my uncle." Emma took George's hand and placed it on her belly. "Feel this, there's our baby in here."
George touched Emma's smooth belly, and his expression darkened.
Emma said it was a month ago, on the night George got drunk, that they had sex. But George had no memory of that night, except for the messy clothes on the floor the next day and Emma's story.
Did they really make love that night?
Was there really a baby in Emma's belly?
Was he really the father?
George didn't know anything, but he had lost Emma once before because he didn't trust her. Now that Emma was back, he didn't want to doubt her, no matter what.
If she said it, he would believe it.
"Isabella, would you like to come work at my company?" George asked softly, summoning his courage.
"Why?" Emma's face showed confusion, but inside, she was thrilled. She had been wondering how to infiltrate the Russell Group, and now George was inviting her himself.
"Because..." George couldn't admit that he wanted to keep her close to protect her and keep other men at a distance. That was the only way he felt secure.
But he couldn't say that, so he made up another excuse. "Although you're the founder and chief designer of Miss Lady, you lack some management skills. If you come to the Russell Group for a while, I believe with your learning ability, you can make Miss Lady even better."
Emma pretended to understand. "No wonder I often feel overwhelmed managing Miss Lady. The root cause is here. George, you're amazing."
Emma gave George a loud kiss on the cheek, the sound echoing in the empty living room. George's large hand moved from Emma's waist upward, but just as he was about to touch her breasts, Emma placed a finger on his nose.
"No, the baby could be in danger."
"Okay, whatever you say."
George felt a sharp pain in his heart, as if something had pricked him. Whether the baby was real or not, he had already lost one child with Emma. He wouldn't let anything happen to this one.
The next morning, the entire Russell Group received a notice that Isabella would be coming to the company for an internship. Everyone knew it was just a way for Isabella to pass the time.
The employees just needed to clean up and warmly welcome Isabella. If they had the chance to get on her good side, it would be more beneficial than working hard for decades.
So, everyone was eager to welcome Isabella.
George got up early, prepared everything, and looked forward to going to the company with Emma.
"Ready? Let's go." George twirled the car keys, looking like a college student who had stolen his parents' car keys to take his girlfriend for a ride.
Emma was organizing her bag. Hearing this, she paused and then shook her head. "I'll drive myself. George, I don't want special treatment. We agreed, I'm just a regular employee."
"It's not convenient. You know how bad traffic is during rush hour." George added.
"I'm not your delicate wife. I'm your partner. If I can't even get to the company on my own, how can I manage Miss Lady?" Emma responded firmly.
"Alright, be careful." George sighed, feeling a bit disappointed but respecting her decision.
Emma drove into the busy streets. The morning rush hour traffic was dense, with honking horns everywhere.
As she focused on driving, a car suddenly swerved in front of her. Emma didn't have time to react and slammed on the brakes, but still collided with the other car. The car shook violently and then came to a stop.
"Oh my God!" Emma was shocked. She quickly checked the car's condition and found it wouldn't start. She tried to turn the key, but the engine made a weak sound and wouldn't run.
