Chapter 395 Poison
Phoenix quietly approached the small building, peering through the window to see Emma and a man deep in conversation, with several bottles of medicine spread out on the table.
The bottles looked ancient, their labels handwritten in a sloppy manner, clearly not officially approved. Phoenix's unease grew, sensing that these medicines were far from ordinary.
She watched as Emma picked up a bottle, scrutinizing the label with a smug smile on her face.
"Could it be poison for Charles? To make him die quickly?" Phoenix's heart skipped a beat, instantly realizing the gravity of the situation.
She knew Emma wasn't as kind-hearted as she pretended to be.
Emma had suggested taking Charles back to care for him, undoubtedly for his inheritance!
As soon as Emma left, Phoenix stormed into the dilapidated pharmacy that looked like it was from the last century.
The moment she pushed the door open, a strong smell of medicine mixed with mildew hit her, making her almost gag. The dim lighting inside felt like a horror movie set, with faded labels plastered on the walls and bottles and jars on the shelves in disarray, resembling an abandoned warehouse.
She headed straight for the counter, where a ghostly pale clerk was engrossed in his phone, not even bothering to look up. Phoenix's anger flared, and she slammed her hand on the counter, her voice icy. "What did that woman buy just now?"
The clerk lazily lifted his head, his eyes sleepy. "She's a regular here." His tone was dismissive, not taking Phoenix seriously at all.
"Regular? What did she buy?" Phoenix exclaimed, her eyes blazing with fury, ready to strangle the clerk to get the answer.
The clerk, startled by her intensity, stammered, "She bought a lot of stuff, I don't really know the specifics."
His eyes darted around, clearly trying to evade.
"Don't know?" Phoenix shouted, "Are you a clerk or a decoration? You don't know what she bought? Are you messing with me?"
Her anger escalated, and the clerk, sweating under her pressure, scratched his head, his voice shrinking. "Customers pick their own stuff, so we don't ask what it's for."
"Don't ask what it's for?" Phoenix sneered, her eyes sharp, "What if she bought poison? You wouldn't care? Is this place even legal?"
The clerk was rendered speechless, his face paler, stuttering, "I really don't know what she bought."
"Useless!" Phoenix gritted her teeth, wanting to kick the counter over. She glared at the clerk and stormed out, cursing under her breath. "This dump, can't even get information on medicine, what a waste of time!"
As she walked out of the pharmacy, her mind raced. "Emma, that bitch, definitely up to no good! No matter what she bought, I need to catch her red-handed and ruin her completely!"
She didn't care about Charles's fate, her mind fixated on destroying Emma's reputation.
"This time, I'll make George see what kind of woman he's really in love with!" Phoenix smirked, her eyes gleaming with malice. She quickened her pace, already plotting how to expose Emma to George and tear apart her facade.
"Emma, you're done for!"
Phoenix left the pharmacy with a determined plan. She knew her suspicions alone wouldn't convince George of Emma's crimes; she needed a breakthrough. So, she quickly bribed one of George's mansion servants.
"Keep an eye on George's schedule at home and when Charles takes his medicine, report to me immediately." Phoenix handed the servant a wad of cash, her tone commanding, "There'll be more rewards once it's done."
The servant took the money, greed flashing in his eyes, nodding: "Mrs. Russell, don't worry, I'll handle it."
The servant soon messaged the information: [Mr. George Russell will be home this afternoon; Mr. Charles Russell usually takes his medicine before dinner, Ms. Jones personally feeds him.]
Phoenix sneered, then replied: [Good, the opportunity is here.]
That afternoon, George had just returned home and was sitting in the living room reviewing documents. Emma walked over to Charles with a cup of medicine, whispering, "Grandpa, it's time for your medicine."
Charles nodded, about to open his mouth, when suddenly, the door was forcefully pushed open, and Phoenix stormed in, shouting, "Stop! He can't drink that!"
Everyone in the living room froze. George frowned and stood up, his tone displeased. "Mom, what are you doing?"
Emma looked equally shocked, her hand holding the medicine cupsuspended in mid-air. "Mom, why are you here all of a sudden?"
Phoenix sneered, pointing at the medicine cup in Emma's hand, her tone sharp. "Why am I here suddenly? If I didn't come, my father-in-law would be dead because of you! Emma, you know exactly what you're doing! You're feeding him poison to kill him and take his inheritance!"
George's face darkened instantly, "Mom, what nonsense are you talking about? Emma would never do such a thing." His tone was firm, his gaze filled with unquestionable trust, "Emma is kind-hearted and has always taken great care of Grandpa. Stop making baseless accusations!"
Emma was frantic, her eyes reddening. "Mom, why are you slandering me? How could I harm Grandpa? This medicine was prescribed by the doctor, I give it to him on time every day, how could it be poison?"
Phoenix was relentless, pulling out a photo from her bag and throwing it on the table. "Look for yourself! This is proof of you buying medicine at that illegal pharmacy! That place sells fake and banned drugs! Are you going to deny you bought poison?"
George picked up the photo, his brows furrowed, his gaze shifting between Emma and Phoenix.
Emma was stunned, staring at the photo, momentarily speechless. "I was just buying a special medicine! It's only available there!"
Phoenix scoffed, her tone mocking. "Emma, you're quite the actress! Do you think you can fool everyone? If my father-in-law drinks this, he'll die right here!"
Charles, sitting in his wheelchair, his face dark, shook his head at Phoenix, but his speech center hadn't fully recovered, he could only make sounds, unable to form complete sentences.
Emma was on the verge of tears, her voice trembling. "Grandpa, I really didn't! This medicine was prescribed by the doctor, and I would never harm you!"
George took a deep breath, trying to stay calm. "Mom, you say Emma bought poison, what's your evidence? A photo alone proves nothing. I advise you to stop this, or don't blame me for being harsh!"
Phoenix shouted, "Evidence? You can have it tested! Whether there's poison in this medicine will be clear! George, don't be fooled by her! She's a venomous woman!"
"Enough! I know Emma better than you; she would never do such a thing!" George replied.
