Chapter 331 Clues
With Michael's help, Emma managed to slip away from the memorial hall. She stood quietly, staring at the photo in the center of the room, still unable to believe her eyes. She had only wanted to escape George's harassment, take Lucas, and return to Sunterra with Michael to live a peaceful, undisturbed life. So, she had deliberately disappeared for a while.
George would commit suicide over this?
Emma had no choice but to accept it.
That day, she had seen the body in the pool of blood with her own eyes and had found George's ring herself.
There was no doubt in her mind—George was indeed dead.
How could George die so easily?
"Let's go," Michael said softly, patting Emma's shoulder. "I'll get you out of here."
Emma nodded and murmured a quiet response.
Michael took Emma to a quiet café, and they sat in a corner.
"You shouldn't have gone," Michael began, his tone tinged with helplessness. "You know Scarlett's personality; she won't let you off the hook."
Emma lowered her head, her voice filled with confusion. "I just wanted to see him one last time."
Michael sighed, looking at her with a complex expression. "Emma, George's death isn't your fault. You don't have to carry all the blame on your shoulders."
Emma gripped her cup tightly, her voice barely audible. "But if it weren't for me, he wouldn't have died."
"Don't say that," Michael interrupted her. "I know George's character better than anyone. Every decision he made was his own choice. It had nothing to do with you."
Tears finally fell from Emma's eyes. She looked up, her gaze filled with pain and struggle. "But I really regret it. If I hadn't taken Lucas away, if I had given him one more chance, maybe things would have been different."
"Emma, some things are destined to be irreversible. You need to learn to let go and find peace. George is gone, and you can't let yourself be trapped in the past's pain."
Emma closed her eyes, took a deep breath, and tried to calm herself. Her tears gradually stopped, and her expression became much more composed.
"Thank you, Michael," she said softly, a hint of relief in her voice. "You're right. The past can't be changed. I'll try to let go and start anew."
Michael nodded, a trace of relief in his eyes. "That's the Emma I know."
Emma just smiled without saying anything. Michael then brought up another matter.
"By the way, Emma. Now that George is dead and the Russell Group is under our control, it's time for us to return to Sunterra."
The Russell family had fallen, and George was dead. Her revenge plan was complete.
It was time to go back.
But why did her heart feel so empty?
Emma shook her head, pushing away those troubling thoughts. She went to George's old villa to pack Lucas's belongings.
Lucas's suitcase was already open, with clothes and toys neatly arranged inside. She crouched down, ready to put a small jacket in, when her fingers touched a phone.
She paused for a moment and picked up the phone.
The screen was locked, and Emma instinctively used her fingerprint to unlock it. Before she realized how absurd her action was, the screen unlocked.
Emma immediately recognized it as George's backup phone.
Because George was often busy and misplaced his phone, Joshua had prepared several backup phones for him.
After George's death, all his phones, including the backups, were missing. The police found no evidence of foul play and ruled George's death a suicide.
Emma had always found the situation suspicious and had tried to find clues but came up empty-handed.
She had accepted that George had committed suicide.
But now, she had found one of George's backup phones in Lucas's coat pocket.
This meant she could see who George had contacted before his death.
Emma opened the phone and saw a text message: [Brilliant Star Hotel 2201, Emma is in trouble.]
Then, she opened WhatsApp and saw previous messages from Phoenix to George.
Emma's heart sank, and her fingers trembled slightly. Her mind flashed back to the details of George's fall and Phoenix's strange behavior at the funeral. Her intuition told her that Phoenix was likely involved in George's death.
Emma found Phoenix at a high-end café, elegantly stirring her coffee. When Phoenix saw Emma walk in, her expression changed slightly but quickly returned to calm.
"Emma, what are you doing here?" Phoenix forced a smile.
Emma sat across from her, her gaze cold and direct. "George's death has something to do with you, right?"
Phoenix's hand shook, and the spoon fell into the cup with a clear clink. Her face turned pale, but she quickly regained her composure and sneered. "What nonsense are you spouting? George's death was your doing, not mine."
Emma placed the text message on the table, her eyes sharp. "This is something George left behind. You lured him to the Brilliant Star Hotel, and then he jumped. Phoenix, what did you do to him?"
Phoenix's expression changed completely. She gripped the edge of the table tightly, a flicker of panic in her eyes. But she quickly bit her lip and said coldly, "I don't know what you're talking about! George's death has nothing to do with me. Stop making baseless accusations! I didn't send that message!"
Emma sneered. "Do you think you can hide the truth forever? George's death wasn't an accident. You had an agenda, but he rejected you, so you plotted everything out of spite, didn't you?"
Phoenix's body trembled slightly, fear flashing in her eyes, but she stubbornly refused to admit it. "Bollocks! Emma, don't think you can slander me with just a phone! Prove that I sent that message if you can."
Phoenix's mind finally cleared a bit. The SIM card used to send the message was one she had picked up from the street, with no connection to her whatsoever!
And that night, she had already sabotaged all the cameras and hadn't registered at the hotel.
Even the police couldn't find any clues, so how could Emma make such wild accusations?
With that thought, Phoenix's confidence grew.
But Emma saw through her inner turmoil.
"Phoenix, I will find the evidence and make you pay for George's death!"
"Wait a minute! Didn't you hate George? Didn't you wish for his death? Why are you still holding on now that he's gone?"
Phoenix genuinely couldn't understand.
Emma didn't have an answer to that question either.
"None of your business!"
