Chapter 486 Cannot Accompany You

From a distance, George saw the scene unfold, and it felt like his heart was being ripped apart. The sight of Emma crying in Michael's arms was a dagger to his soul. Her face showed such vulnerability and dependence, it was clear she needed Michael more than anyone else.

George trembled slightly, his heart heavy with bitterness.

He wanted to run over and hold Emma, but he knew he had no right to interfere in her life anymore. He had made his decision, and he couldn't just show up in front of her again. Silently, he regretted his choice, but the guilt in his heart was too strong to ignore.

'I'll just disappear from her life completely,' George thought, his face a mask of stoicism.

He turned and walked away slowly, the turmoil in his heart making it impossible to find peace. He only hoped she would find true happiness, no matter who it was with.

All he had left were endless sighs and restraint. His figure gradually blurred and disappeared into the shadows of the hospital corridor, as if he had never existed.

Meanwhile, on the other side, Emma felt like she had lost something important, leaving an indescribable emptiness. She couldn't explain the sense of loss in her heart, only feeling that something had left her without her knowing.

Michael caught a glimpse of George's retreating figure out of the corner of his eye, feeling a subtle wave of emotion. He chose not to tell Emma about it, intentionally or unintentionally opting for silence. He certainly hoped Emma would never have any more interactions with George.

"Don't think too much," Michael whispered, gently stroking Emma's shoulder, trying to draw her attention back to him.

Emma turned her head slightly, seeing Michael's face, and her unease eased a bit. However, the sense of loss still lingered in her heart. She nodded silently, trying to hide her inner turmoil behind a forced smile.

"If you want, we can go for a walk," Michael suggested.

"Okay," Emma responded instinctively, even though she doubted if such an action could alleviate her loss. At that moment, she just wanted to escape the pain and follow Michael into the unknown dawn.

Michael was very pleased with Emma's compliance; he liked it when she was entirely focused on him, much like Isabella in the past.

As they were about to leave, Michael's phone suddenly rang. The caller ID showed it was Zachary from Auris Group, his voice filled with urgency. "Michael, there's an emergency. You need to come to the office!"

"Not today," Michael refused without hesitation.

"You can't put it off! You have to come today!" Zachary insisted on the other end.

"Why should I listen to you? Are you my boss?"

"If I were your real boss, I'd have sent someone to stop you!"

Michael shook his head in exasperation, but before he could speak, Zachary continued, "Michael, without you, our team loses its soul! I can't do this without you! Please come to the office and help me out. I'm losing it here! I need to see you today. A single guy like me deserves the support of a real man!"

Michael was about to find another excuse, but Emma interrupted him.

"Go ahead, Michael. Mr. Baker's issue sounds important. You should go and come back soon."

Zachary, hearing Emma's voice, immediately expressed his gratitude, "Emma, you're a lifesaver! You're absolutely right, Michael needs to come. It's really important!"

"Zachary!" Michael called out, feeling a mix of frustration and a hint of amusement.

"I'm hanging up now, Michael. Hurry up and come over! Don't forget to solve my problems!" Zachary said playfully.

Emma looked at Michael with a slight smile, as if encouraging him. Michael finally sighed, feeling a bit relieved, "Alright, I'll head to the office. I'll finish up quickly and come back to you."

"Okay, I'll be waiting," Emma said, standing on her tiptoes to give Michael a light kiss on the cheek.

Watching Michael leave, Emma sat alone, feeling a bit lost.

What could she do for the rest of the afternoon?

Emma placed a call to Mia. "Mia, are you free? Let's go for a walk."

"I'll be right there!" Mia's voice was full of energy, lifting Emma's spirits a bit as she looked forward to their time together.

"Where to?"

"I want to say goodbye to Grandpa before I leave."

"Sure, I'll go with you."

Emma and Mia drove to the cemetery, following the familiar path as Emma searched for Douglas's gravestone.

Through the car window, she could see the rows of gravestones bathed in sunlight, looking particularly serene. After parking, Emma took a deep breath and walked towards Douglas's gravestone.

As she approached, she was surprised to find the gravestone well-maintained. The white marble gleamed in the sunlight, surrounded by blooming flowers and lush grass, as if telling of Douglas's peaceful and warm life. At that moment, Emma felt a sense of comfort and warmth, and she couldn't help but speak softly, "Grandpa, this place is beautiful. You must be happy here."

As she was reflecting, a cemetery worker happened to pass by. Emma approached and smiled, thanking them, "Thank you for maintaining this place. It's really beautiful."

The worker shook his head repeatedly, "You misunderstand. Actually, it's not us who have been doing this. It's Mr. Russell who comes every week to clean it himself."

"Mr. Russell?"

Emma was stunned. Was it Michael?

Mia seemed to think so too, and she quickly asked, "Is it Michael?"

"No, it's a gentleman named George."

"George?" Emma couldn't believe her ears.

Why would he come to clean Douglas's grave?

As she pondered, the worker continued, "But recently, he hasn't been able to come in person, so he called us to do it for him. His feelings for you and your grandfather are truly deep."

Emma was lost in thought, her heart filled with complex emotions. It turned out that George had been coming here every week to clean and remember, and recently, he hadn't come because he was injured.

But he still kept Douglas in his heart, entrusting others to clean the grave.
