Chapter 15 To Set the Record Straight
George slung an arm around Emma's shoulder and murmured, "Gramps is here, let's roll."
His hand was warm and solid, making Emma feel safe, like all her worries just poofed away. She gave a small smile and nodded, feeling a happiness she couldn't quite put into words.
They strolled over to the center of the banquet, where Charles was chilling at the main table, looking all friendly and stuff. Emma felt like she knew Charles from somewhere, like a distant memory.
George, ever the gentleman, turned to Emma and asked, "Emma, what do you wanna eat? I'll grab it for you."
"Thanks." Emma felt his genuine concern, and a warm feeling spread through her. She looked into George's eyes and couldn't help but smile, feeling like this was the happiness she always dreamed of.
George picked up a tasty dish and placed it on her plate himself.
Emma was touched. She took a careful bite, her face lighting up with a shy smile.
"Babe, how is it? Good?" George asked softly, his eyes full of love.
"Super delicious!" Emma's smile grew even wider, wishing this moment could last forever.
But Anna was fuming, her eyes flashing with jealousy. Seeing George's affection for Emma made her blood boil. This Emma, who she once thought of as a nobody, was now getting all this attention, and she couldn't stand it.
Even knowing George was just putting on a show for Charles, she was still pissed!
Emma's happiness lasted until the end of the banquet, and it all came crashing down when they got to the garage.
George, like he was shaking off something gross, let go of Emma's hand. He pulled out a handkerchief, wiped his hand, and tossed it away like it was trash.
Emma was stunned by his sudden change in attitude.
She watched in shock as George opened the car door for Anna, who had been trailing behind, helping her into the car. The car sped off, disappearing quickly.
Emma was left standing alone on the empty street, the autumn wind chilling her to the bone, wiping away the fake warmth of the evening.
That night, Emma sat alone on the couch, the house silent except for the ticking clock. Scattered on the table were books on tumor treatment, her mind a mess, her soul torn by constant fear.
She scoured through various videos, even though she knew she might find bad news, she wanted to understand her condition as much as possible. As medical terms flooded her mind, despair crept in.
She thought, 'Am I gonna die because of this baby?'
Just as she was spiraling, her phone buzzed. Emma looked at it and saw a video message from a stranger. She hesitated but clicked on it.
The video showed Anna's sneaky moves at the banquet, her chat with Mrs. Brooks, and her slipping the bracelet into Emma's pocket, all caught on camera.
"This is nuts!" Emma gripped her phone, a spark of hope igniting in her heart, 'I gotta show this to George!' She quickly got dressed, ready to head to the company to find George.
She walked into the building, determined to clear her name. After checking in at the front desk, she noticed the employees whispering.
"Did you hear? Mr. Russell's wife stole a bracelet at the banquet!"
"She's such an embarrassment to the Russell family and our company."
Emma's face went pale, her heart aching like it was being stabbed. Would anyone believe her?
Emma clutched her phone tightly and marched towards the CEO's office, knowing she couldn't give up. She thought, 'With this evidence, George will have to believe me!'
Even if she didn't have much time left, she had to expose Anna's true colors!
