Chapter 297 Same Name
Scarlett couldn't believe that Phoenix was being detained.
How could this be possible?
It had to be a mistake. Maybe it was someone with the same name.
But when the police showed her Phoenix's photo, Scarlett's vision went dark. It really was Phoenix.
Why had she ended up at the police station?
With the help of the police, Scarlett finally got to see Phoenix.
The moment Phoenix saw Scarlett, tears streamed down her face as she cried out, "Aunt Scarlett, I didn't do anything wrong! The police misunderstood me. They don't believe I'm George's cousin!"
Scarlett felt a mix of heartache and anger. Listening to Phoenix's sobs, she grew increasingly irritated.
"Enough, stop crying!" Scarlett snapped, her tone impatient. "We'll talk about this at home."
Phoenix wiped away her tears. Despite feeling wronged, she knew Scarlett's temper well. She nodded and followed Scarlett out of the police station.
Back home, Scarlett wasn't ready to let things go. She decided to take Phoenix to the Russell Group to confront George.
"How dare George not acknowledge you? Letting you suffer such humiliation, I need to get to the bottom of this!" Scarlett said as she drove, her voice filled with determination.
When they arrived at the Russell Group, Scarlett barged into George's office without hesitation. George, busy with work, looked up in surprise as Scarlett and Phoenix entered.
"What are you doing here?" George asked, frowning as he set down his papers.
"George, you'd better explain to me why Phoenix was detained by the police!" Scarlett demanded, her voice full of displeasure.
"Didn't she tell you?" George replied, not even bothering to look at Phoenix.
"No matter what she did, she's your cousin! How can you be so heartless? Do you even care about me as your mother?" Scarlett was furious.
George finally looked up, a knowing look in his eyes. He realized Scarlett wasn't there to support Phoenix but to reclaim her own dignity. Scarlett didn't really care how George treated Phoenix; she cared about whether George respected her.
For Scarlett, her own status was paramount.
"Enough is enough," George said, losing patience. He slammed his papers on the desk and stormed out. Scarlett, feeling humiliated, was also angry and took it out on Phoenix.
"What are you looking at? You can't even handle someone like Isabella. What's the point of keeping you around? Get to work!" Scarlett snapped before leaving.
Phoenix was left stunned by the back-to-back outbursts.
What were they talking about? Why did Scarlett suddenly get so angry? What had happened?
Phoenix could ignore Emma, but she couldn't ignore Scarlett and George. Seeing them both angry, she obediently went to work.
Under Joshua's orders, the HR department assigned Phoenix the most basic tasks. She had no real responsibilities, just running errands and delivering documents, essentially acting as an internal courier for the company.
The Russell Group building was enormous, with many departments. Phoenix spent the entire day running around and ended up completely exhausted.
Near the end of the day, she went to the administration department to deliver documents and happened to see Isabella at her desk. Phoenix was too tired to cause trouble and just wanted to go home and rest.
After three days of hard work, Scarlett finally remembered Phoenix and called HR to relieve her of the menial tasks.
That evening, the Russell family was hosting a welcome party for Phoenix.
To attract more attendees, Scarlett turned the event into a charity gala. She planned to donate money in Phoenix's name to build her reputation as a kind-hearted beauty, paving the way for future advantageous marriages.
As George's wife, Emma naturally had to attend. However, she was busy with work and didn't have time to pick out an outfit, so she simply changed into a silk dress and went to the party.
The crystal chandeliers cast a sparkling glow over the ballroom. As Emma stepped onto the red carpet, she heard a deliberately loud, mocking laugh behind her.
"Isn't that Ms. Taylor?" Phoenix approached, holding a champagne glass, followed by a group of impeccably dressed young women. "You dressed so plainly; I might think you're one of the servers."
Emma's pale blue silk dress hugged her waist beautifully. She glanced at the ostentatious ostrich feather trim on Phoenix's dress. "Ms. Lewis, you look ready for a stage performance."
"Look at her pearl necklace," one of the girls in a pink dress giggled. "Wearing such cheap jewelry to a charity gala?"
Emma was about to respond when the sound of high heels clicking on the floor interrupted her.
International jewelry designer Luna walked straight up to Emma, delightedly examining her necklace. "Oh my! This is the pearl necklace I couldn't get at last year's jewelry show! Ms. Taylor, as Miss Lady's chief designer, you have such an eye for beauty. This necklace looks even better on you than on the model!"
The ballroom fell silent.
Phoenix's nails dug into her champagne glass as she watched Luna warmly link arms with Emma. "Ms. Taylor, I need your advice on the centerpiece jewelry for the auction later."
Emma and Luna walked away together. Once they were out of earshot, Luna released Emma's arm and teased, "You really have the worst luck. Everywhere you go, there's someone jealous of you."
"Only the mediocre aren't envied. If people are jealous of me, it means I'm talented!" Emma laughed, glancing at the man approaching Luna. "Go on, I can handle myself."
"Don't let anyone bully you," Luna said, still a bit worried. Emma's innocent face often attracted shameless enemies, making Luna protective.
Emma smirked, "If you hadn't shown up, I would have sent them packing myself."
"Great, no one can bully you." Luna finally felt reassured and left.
Since moving to Lakeside Haven, Emma had kept a low profile. Many people knew her through the Stuart Group's jewelry show and her marriage to George. Today was a perfect opportunity to expand her network, and Emma wasn't going to miss it.
She mingled through the crowd, winning over those who had previously held prejudices against her with her charm.
Feeling tired from socializing, Emma headed to the refreshment area, only to find three girls in starry dresses deliberately blocking her path.
