Chapter 444 Being Alone

"I don't want to."

George froze, sensing the unease in her refusal. He wanted to bridge the gap between them, but an invisible barrier seemed to hold him back.

"Emma, I just want to take care of you. Can you let me help?"

Emma shook her head again, struggling internally. She didn't know how to face George, who once made her feel safe and loved, but now felt so foreign and frightening. Despite her deep love for George, the shadows from her dreams kept surfacing, leaving her unsure of how to confront him.

"I'm really fine, and I just want to be alone."

"Alright, I'll be outside. If you need anything, call me." He walked slowly to the door, his expression darkening. Though filled with anxiety, he didn't want to force her to accept his help.

As the door closed softly, Emma felt a slight relief in her shoulders, but the ensuing loneliness made her feel incredibly vulnerable.

This familiar yet strange feeling almost suffocated her. She loved George deeply, yet constantly questioned his sincerity, wondering if she was merely a tool for his revenge.

The room returned to silence. Emma sat on the edge of the bed, her mind filled with painful images from her dreams and Anna's cold smile. Tears slid down her cheeks, torn by inner conflict, as she oscillated between reality and illusion.

George keenly had sensed something was off with Emma, so he decided to investigate today's events.

"Did Emma go out today?" he quietly asked the maid.

"Yes, Mrs. Russell left with a man. They seemed to be in a hurry," the maid's response hit George like a bolt of lightning, filling him with intense anxiety and unease. His mind raced, trying to figure out who the man was and why he was with Emma.

"Do you know where they went?"

"I don't know, Mrs. Russell didn't tell me," the maid replied respectfully.

A storm brewed in George's heart. His intuition told him he needed to quickly find out Emma's whereabouts. Without hesitation, he dialed Joshua's number, "Contact everyone connected to Emma. I need to know where she went today!"

On the other end, Joshua responded immediately, "Understood, Mr. Russell."

A few hours later, Joshua returned with a grave expression, "Mr. Russell, I found out! Mrs. Russell did go out this morning. She was with Joseph."

"Joseph?" George's brow furrowed, his heart tightening. He quickly recalled the name. This guy had once kidnapped Lucas and Seraphine, and George had personally interrogated him, trying to uncover who was behind it. Joseph had escaped, and now he dared to approach Emma!

"Yes, surveillance footage shows them leaving the neighborhood together and then heading to the prison," Joshua said, his brows knitted tightly. "They went to visit Anna." Joshua's words struck George like a thunderclap.

"The prison?" George felt a chill run down his spine, his mind flooded with worries. He quickly pieced together the situation; Anna might be orchestrating something from behind the scenes.

It was too late now. Tomorrow morning, he would go to the prison himself and confront Anna.

The Next Day, at Dawn.

George arrived at the prison, heading straight to the visitation room. His gaze locked onto Anna across the room, his expression dark.

Anna sat in the visitation room chair, momentarily stunned to see George storming in. A smug smile slowly spread across her face. She had been waiting for this moment, eager to see how her former lover would react.

She had planned to have the police summon George today, but he had come on his own, saving her the trouble.

However, what angered Anna was that George's first words were about Emma!

"What did you say to Emma?" George's voice was cold, brimming with uncontrollable anger.

Anna smirked, a hint of provocation in her eyes. "What I said is none of your business. Isn't she supposed to be the strong woman you love? Go ask her! Why ask me? Or maybe she doesn't trust you anymore and won't talk to you, so you came to me. George, you're pathetic! Tell me, what has that bitch Emma become now?"

"Anna, watch your mouth! Emma's condition is definitely because of something you said!" George was furious, unable to tolerate Anna's interference in Emma's life.

"Of course, it's all because of me," Anna's smile grew wider. "If she truly loved you, she should be able to resist my influence. Do you really think I can control her emotions?" Her words were filled with mockery and disdain, further enraging George.

"You slandered me in front of her, right?" George's eyes were sharp as knives, his hatred for Anna unmistakable.

"I just made her see you for the fraud you are!" Anna retorted fearlessly, her voice full of anger. Her face showed a mix of pain and defiance. "You're so cunning, playing with emotions like a master, making me believe you were deeply in love with me!"

"Love? What do you know about love?" George sneered, his anger intensifying. "You don't understand true love! Your love is just a mix of selfishness and possessiveness, filled with jealousy and resentment!"

"Selfishness? Possessiveness?" Anna was stung by his words, her eyes flashing with a mix of anger and despair. "You made me feel hopeful, every time you favored me it was like pulling me into an abyss, only to tell me you never loved me! Is this an insult to my feelings?"

"I never promised to love you. No matter how gentle I was, it was because I thought you were the girl from Dreamscape Peak. I mistook you for someone else. My heart has always belonged to Emma!"

"Can you really hurt me this way, just because you favor Emma?" Anna's voice was on the verge of breaking. "You should have told me the truth from the start, instead of pushing me into the abyss when I thought you loved me!"
