Chapter 24 Worsening Condition
George's tenderness and love were like a sweet dream, bright but gone in a flash. Emma had him, then lost him just as quick.
She couldn't figure out why George flipped on her, just like she couldn't figure out why he was so sweet when she woke up that morning.
Emma's heart felt like it was about to shatter.
What was the deal between love and indifference anyway?
In the days that followed, George ghosted her completely, not even a text, like she didn't exist.
Emma lay in her hospital bed, not getting any better, feeling weaker by the day. Her doctor was a jerk, so she had Mia take her to CyberMed Hospital for a check-up.
After the check-up, Emma was floored.
"Ms. Jones, if you don't end the pregnancy, your life is at serious risk."
The doc looked at Emma with concern. He'd seen it all, he still felt a deep sense of sorrow seeing Emma lose her life because of her baby.
The hospital room's curtains were half-open, letting in a weak sunlight that hit Emma's pale face.
"I know, but I can't give up this baby." Emma's voice was firm but helpless.
Mia stood by, worried sick, "Emma, you gotta think about yourself. The baby's not even born yet; your life matters more."
"I get it, but I've made up my mind." Emma smiled faintly, tears in her eyes, "I'll do everything to protect my baby, even if it means sacrificing myself."
There was a stubborn glint in Emma's eyes; she was always like this. Mia didn't push further because she knew once Emma decided, there was no changing her mind.
Just like when she fell for George.
"At least tell George about this!" Mia wanted to shake some sense into Emma, "You can't be suffering here while he's out having fun with his mistress!"
Emma just shook her head.
What good would it do to tell him?
He wouldn't care if she lived or died. To George, it might even be better if she was gone.
The baby's growth was pressing against a tumor that could get worse any second.
As the baby grew, Emma's condition would get worse.
But to make sure her baby could be born, Emma had to stay strong.
She sent out tons of resumes online, but got nothing back. With no other options, Emma took on design gigs from small companies online under a fake name.
Under her alias, Emma finally got a gig to design a pair of rings. She picked up her pen and started sketching. Every line was filled with her heart and soul.
Emma loved designing, and the pay for this gig was decent, enough to buy some cute outfits for the baby.
Just as she was daydreaming about her baby in those outfits, she heard a noise at the door. George was back. He was still the same, cold as ice, impossible to warm up.
In the end, his heart stayed frozen, while her passion was snuffed out by the cold.
George, in a black suit, was carrying several brightly colored, cute shopping bags.
Emma recognized those brands; they were high-end kids' clothing brands.
Were they for her baby?
Emma's eyes lit up as she stared at George, her excitement and hope almost bursting out.
But George threw cold water all over her.
"Emma, you don't actually think these are for you, do you?" George's voice dripped with mockery, "How could I possibly have a kid with you?"
He added another line, completely crushing Emma's heart.
She stared at his cold, handsome face in agony, "George, you're so cruel!"
"Do you expect me to be gentle with a lowlife like you? Emma, do you even deserve it?"
George seemed to enjoy hurting Emma, basking in her heartbreak. Emma dared to impersonate the girl he liked from childhood; Emma was unworthy!
Yeah, she was unworthy, but if that was the case, why did George make promises in the first place!
