Chapter 218 Don't Pretend to Be Stupid
On the surface, Anna was praising Joshua for being a loving husband, but in reality, she was mocking him for overestimating himself. She implied that he was trying to appear respectable by buying an expensive wedding dress despite not having the financial means.
Joshua was taken aback. He hadn't expected Anna to jump to the conclusion that he was getting married. He quickly denied it.
"Ms. Stuart, you misunderstood. I have no plans to get married at the moment."
"Then who is it for?" Anna felt a bad premonition rising. "Is someone from the Russell Group getting married? George should have told me in advance so I could prepare a gift."
"Ms. Stuart, you already know the answer. Stop pretending."
Joshua didn't want to continue this pointless conversation. Everyone present knew that the wedding dress was custom-made by George, but not for Anna. So, who else could it be for?
There was only one answer—Isabella.
"This wedding dress was custom-made for Ms. Taylor by Mr. Russell a month ago."
Joshua's words were like a stone shattering the calm surface of a lake.
Her George had actually ordered a wedding dress for that bitch Isabella!
She was supposed to be the one marrying George. Why was George thinking about someone else?
Anna's fingers clenched tightly around the smooth white fabric. She was gripping it so hard that Joshua feared she might tear the dress.
"Please wrap the dress for me. I need to take it with me," Joshua said calmly to the sales assistant, though his brow was furrowed in displeasure.
"Of course, please wait for a moment." The assistant quickly complied. She retrieved a nearly six-foot-tall gift box from the storeroom, and together, they carefully placed the dress-covered display stand into the box, taking great care not to wrinkle the delicate garment.
The dress's skirt swayed gently like a cloud with their movements.
Suddenly, Anna rushed over, her voice shrill as she screamed, "How dare you take it without my permission!" Her voice seemed to tear through the air of the entire store.
"Ms. Stuart..." The assistant was momentarily stunned, realizing that trouble was brewing.
"You're not allowed to touch this dress!" Anna gripped on the assistant was firm, preventing anyone from touching the dress or letting it out of her sight.
"But this dress was reserved by Mr. Thomas," the assistant explained, her tone filled with helplessness.
"I don't care! I won't let you touch it!" Anna's emotions were escalating, nearly losing control. She grabbed the skirt of the dress, trying to snatch it from the assistant's hands.
The assistant felt a wave of panic, silently praying that things wouldn't spiral out of control.
"Let go!" Anna roared, completely disregarding the stares of those around her. She yanked hard, attempting to wrest the dress from the assistant's grasp.
"Ms. Stuart, please calm down!" The assistant's voice was anxious. Fearing the dress might be damaged, she quickly let go.
"Get lost! I want this dress!" Anna's voice grew louder, her eyes flashing with madness. She pulled hard, causing the skirt to deform slightly.
The assistant's heart tightened. She prayed inwardly, 'Please don't ruin it!'
"Ms. Stuart, please let go!" The assistant's voice was filled with anxiety.
Anna seemed oblivious to everything around her, her emotions spiraling out of control. The only thought in her mind was that she couldn't let Isabella have this dress.
"I won't let Joshua take this dress!" Anna's voice echoed through the store, drawing the attention of other customers, who cast curious glances their way.
The assistant didn't dare use force against Anna or snatch the dress from her. She could only try to persuade Anna to let go.
But at this point, Anna was beyond reasoning.
"This is mine! No one can take it from me!" Anna shouted angrily, nearly hugging the entire dress to herself.
Joshua's gaze turned serious as he watched her. He wanted to pry Anna's fingers off the dress, but considering she was the daughter of the Stuart family and Sophia was right there, he couldn't act recklessly. Representing George, he had to maintain his composure. He suppressed his anger and said sternly, "Ms. Stuart, please let go, or I'll have to call the police."
"Call the police? Go ahead! Do you think I'm afraid of you?" Anna continued to shout fearlessly.
She had committed many illegal acts before and had never feared the police. As long as the Stuart family was around, the police wouldn't dare arrest her. Anna was confident in this, which fueled her arrogance.
However, in a corner unnoticed by Anna, Sophia's body trembled slightly. She didn't want to deal with the police again. The incidents with Dominic still haunted her nightmares.
If she could, she would never want to see the police again.
Joshua, with his keen observation skills, noticed the change in Sophia's expression but remained impassive, waiting to see how Sophia would handle the situation.
Sophia approached Anna, her well-manicured hands gently grasping Anna's. "Anna, calm down. You're getting married in a few days. There's no need to get upset over this."
"No need?" Anna shouted angrily. "My husband ordered a wedding dress for another woman, and you tell me there's no need to be upset?"
Sophia sighed. Who could she blame? There were so many good men in the world, but Anna had to fall for that scoundrel George and insisted on marrying him.
Why did Anna have to be so fixated on George?
Did George use some kind of love potion on her?
Sophia's thoughts were in turmoil. Although she was very dissatisfied with this marriage, especially with George's attitude, the most important thing now was to persuade Anna to let go of the dress.
"Anna, there are many dresses more beautiful than this one. I can have a better, more luxurious one custom-made for you."
"There's nothing better than this! George ordered this himself. I want this one! How dare you tell me to back down? Do you even consider me your daughter?"
Anna's anger had clouded her judgment. She shook off Sophia's hand forcefully. Sophia, unprepared, lost her balance and fell heavily to the ground.
Sophia's hand instinctively went to her injured spot, a look of sadness and disappointment flashing in her eyes.
She had treated Anna with all her heart, yet Anna hurt her like this. Had she made a mistake in recognizing this daughter?
Should she not have found her daughter?
