Chapter 364 Tracking
"Emma," George whispered, his voice heavy with pain and regret. He stubbed out his cigarette, leaned back in his chair, and closed his eyes, but Emma's smile kept flashing in his mind.
He knew it was pointless, but he couldn't help himself. He just wanted to be closer to her, even if just a little.
Lately, Emma had the unsettling feeling that someone was following her.
Whether she was out for a walk or taking Seraphine to the nearby grocery store, she couldn't shake the feeling of being followed. She tried to find the source of the gaze, but every time she turned around, there was nothing.
"Emma, what's been going on with you lately?" Mia asked with concern over the phone. "You seem so distracted."
Emma hesitated for a moment before whispering, "I keep feeling like someone is following me, but I don't know who."
"Someone's stalking you?" Mia's tone instantly became serious. "Don't worry, I'll help you figure this out."
Mia arranged to meet Emma for coffee.
They sat down at a corner café, and as Mia sipped her coffee, she scanned the surroundings. It didn't take long for her to spot George. He was standing at the corner of the street, his eyes fixed on Emma.
Mia let out a cold laugh, set down her coffee cup, and whispered, "I knew it was him."
Emma followed Mia's gaze and froze when she saw George. Her face turned pale.
"Who is he?" Emma's voice trembled, her eyes wide with fear.
Mia took her hand, trying to calm her. "Don't be scared, I'm here. He's the one who's been following you."
George realized he had been noticed and started walking towards them. His gaze was intense and complicated, laden with unspoken thoughts that seemed impossible to articulate.
"Emma," George said, standing in front of her, his voice low and hoarse. "Come home with me, please?"
Emma was stunned and then shook her head, stepping back. "I don't know you. You must have me confused with someone else."
George's heart sank. He stepped forward, trying to grab her hand. "Emma, I'm your husband. How can you not remember me? Have you forgotten everything about us?"
Emma frantically pulled her hand away, her voice sharp. "I said I don't know you! Don't touch me!"
George's eyes filled with pain and despair. He couldn't accept Emma's rejection, nor her fear. He reached out, trying to hold her. "Emma, I'm your husband! Can you ever forgive me?"
Emma struggled desperately, her eyes full of terror. "Let go of me! Help!"
Mia immediately rushed forward and pushed George away. Caught off guard, he stumbled back, nearly falling.
"George, are you out of your mind?" Mia stood protectively in front of Emma, shouting angrily. "She said she doesn't know you. Leave immediately."
George's eyes were filled with agony. He looked at Mia, then at Emma, his voice trembling. "She's my wife."
"Wife?" Mia scoffed. "Yes, she was, but now she has nothing to do with you!"
George remembered the divorce papers he had signed. Yes, he and Emma had no connection anymore. He watched Emma trembling behind Mia, his throat feeling choked.
Mia stepped closer to George, whispering, "George, I'm warning you, stay away from Emma. She doesn't remember anything, and that's her blessing. If you keep bothering her, I won't let you off."
As if that wasn't enough, she added, "Have you ever thought about why she forgot you? How much of her memory is filled with your pain? You should be well aware."
With that, Mia took Emma's hand and walked away, leaving George standing there, watching their retreating figures in agony.
George stood on the street, feeling utterly drained. Emma's fearful eyes and Mia's words echoed in his mind—"How much of her memory is filled with your pain?"
He slowly closed his eyes, murmuring to himself, "Why did it have to be like this? Why did it turn out this way?"
Back home, Emma was still shaken by George's confrontation. She sat on the couch, holding a cup of coffee, and spoke to Michael with frustration. "Michael, I've felt like someone was following me for a while, and today I finally saw him. He said he was my husband, but I don't know him at all."
Michael looked at her briefly before speaking softly. "What's his name?"
"Mia said his name is George," Emma replied quietly, looking at Michael with unease. "I've been forgetting things lately. Could he really be connected to me?"
Michael's expression remained calm. Instead, he spoke gently. "He does have some connection to you. I didn't want to tell you because I didn't want to disturb you."
He looked at Emma, his voice carrying a hint of restraint and patience. "George is your ex-husband. He wasn't good to you. He was cruel and almost drove you to a breakdown. You finally divorced him and left, which was the best decision you ever made."
Emma's expression became dazed. "Was he really that bad?"
Michael nodded, his tone tinged with helplessness. "Emma, the car accident was actually because you were trying to avoid him. That's why you were so badly injured and lost your memory." He paused and said with earnestness, "You've started a new life and found happiness. Emma, you just need to remember the pain he caused and stay away from him. There's no need to let him disturb you again."
Emma was silent for a moment before nodding.
That night, she thoroughly searched through news and records.
There were reports of George abusing Emma for his mistress, Anna; Stories of Emma being tortured by George and Anna until she almost died; Countless painful news articles.
Even though Emma had forgotten these events, just reading the news made her heart ache.
It was as if the harm George had inflicted on her still couldn't be erased.
Emma also consulted Mia, who nodded without hesitation. "He's a hopeless jerk! Emma, since you've gotten away, why remember him? Don't bring yourself more misery!"
Emma fully believed Michael and Mia, resolutely saying, "Okay, I'll stay away from him from now on."
The next day, Michael took the initiative to find George. They met at a private club.
When Michael walked into the room, George was sitting on the couch, looking exhausted, as if he hadn't slept all night. George's eyes turned cold when he saw Michael. "What? Finally showing up to tell me to give up?"
Michael sat down across from him, his expression calm and indifferent. "That's right. Emma is no longer the woman who loved you six years ago. She's started a new life. More importantly, she's completely forgotten everything about you."
George's eyes sharpened. "What the hell did you do? Did you make her forget?"
