Chapter 487 George's Grave
"Thanks for all your hard work," Emma said, trying to keep her voice steady. Her feelings for George were a confusing mix of unease and warmth she couldn't quite explain.
Mia noticed Emma's thoughtful expression and gently took her hand, staying quietly by her side.
Emma smiled at Mia, then lowered her head and softly said, "Grandpa, I hope you're doing well up there." A gentle breeze seemed to carry away her longing, sending her blessings to Douglas.
She decided to visit the grave George had set up for her. During the walk, she felt it was interminable and fraught with anxiety.
When she reached the grave, she was stunned—Emma's tombstone was gone, replaced by a new one with George's name on it.
Emma froze, her heart pounding. She couldn't understand why the tombstone had changed.
Even though she knew George was still alive and recovering in the hospital, seeing his tombstone made her heart skip a beat.
At that moment, the cemetery caretaker approached and, seeing Emma's expression, gently explained, "George set up this grave for himself."
"What is he doing?" Emma asked, disbelief coloring her voice. "Why would he do this?"
"George said that without the person he loved most, it didn't matter whether he was alive or dead," the caretaker's eyes showed a hint of sympathy and understanding.
Emma felt an intense wave of pain wash over her heart.
Mia immediately noticed the gloom on Emma's face and quickly held her hand, whispering, "George is out of his mind. Don't pay attention to him! There's nothing interesting about a tombstone. Let's go somewhere to relax!"
Emma nodded slightly, though the pain in her heart couldn't disappear instantly. With Mia by her side, her burden was eased somewhat. No matter what, being with Mia always made things better.
They then drove to the preschool to pick up Seraphine.
As soon as the school bell rang, the children burst out of the doors like joyful little birds, their laughter filling the air. Seraphine spotted Emma and Mia from afar and ran towards them, throwing herself into their arms.
"Mom! Mia!" Seraphine's laughter was radiant and pure, immediately lifting the heaviness from Emma's heart.
"Let's go get some desserts!" Mia suggested, and Seraphine eagerly nodded, pulling them towards a nearby dessert shop.
They walked together, laughing and chatting, but as they neared the shop, Mia suddenly felt something was off.
Her intuition told her someone was following them. Feeling tense, Mia decided to use a little trick. She stopped abruptly, pretending to examine an item on the roadside, creating a perfect distance between herself, Emma, and Seraphine.
Sure enough, the follower turned and tried to avoid being seen, slowly moving towards them. Mia smirked, her eyes gleaming with cunning. Once she confirmed the identity of the follower, she quickly pulled them into a corner, whispering, "We're being followed!"
"Who is it?" Seraphine asked, her eyes wide with curiosity.
"Just wait and see!" Mia said, finding the situation a bit amusing.
Soon, the follower approached, head down, clearly not skilled at hiding. Mia recognized him immediately—it was Lucas! He had seen them after school and, out of curiosity, decided to follow them.
Mia couldn't help but laugh. "Lucas, why aren't you heading home after school? Got a sweet tooth or something?"
Lucas, caught off guard, looked a bit sheepish and lowered his head. "I just missed my mom," he mumbled.
He couldn't fully explain his true intentions. Lately, he had overheard Sophia and Henry talking about Emma's mood, and from his own observations, she seemed off. He wanted to see what was going on.
Mia felt a pang of sympathy for Lucas.
But what surprised her more was Emma's reaction. Emma had always been so loving towards her child. Yet today, seeing Lucas, she showed no warmth, only a hint of detachment.
Mia didn't know that Emma's thoughts had been influenced by Michael's psychological manipulation.
Now, Emma even felt a bit of hostility towards Lucas.
Seeing Emma silent, Mia spoke up, smiling, "It's normal to miss your mom, but following people isn't cool!"
"I wasn't following! I was just passing by," Lucas pouted, looking innocent, which softened Mia's heart.
Emma also felt a bit of compassion.
"Alright, since you're here, why not join us for dessert?" Mia suggested with a laugh.
"Yay!" Lucas immediately brightened up, becoming much more lively.
The four of them sat at a small table, with Seraphine eagerly flipping through the menu, wanting to order everything. Mia patiently guided her, "Pick your favorite. What do you think?"
"I want egg tarts!" Seraphine said excitedly.
"Then let's add it," Mia nodded.
"Mom, what do you like?" Lucas asked suddenly, his eyes filled with anticipation.
"Strawberry mousse."
"Wow, Mom, I love strawberry mousse too!" Emma was a bit taken aback, not expecting Lucas's taste to be so similar to hers, feeling a sudden warmth in her heart.
After ordering, Seraphine excitedly chatted with Lucas about school, their laughter filling the air with sweetness. When the desserts arrived, the strawberry mousse's red and white colors blended beautifully, capturing their attention.
"So pretty!" Seraphine exclaimed.
"Try it!" Lucas smiled, pushing the strawberry mousse towards Seraphine. She eagerly scooped a big bite and brought it to her mouth, the sweet taste making her smile with happiness.
Lucas also scooped a bite and offered it to Emma. "Mom, you should try it. It's really good!" His words were filled with cautious affection.
